like i'd feel like i was behind and missing out for the entire rest of the game, would absolutely kill the experience.

not to mention the stress of knowing that if i get too many deaths it might fuck up the game permanently and make me too weak and make me have to restart from the beginning? i couldn't play like that.

how do people feel about roguelikes where items don't tell you what they do before you pick them up?

i just play those with a wiki open on my second monitor and look it up every time.

is it a "quality of life" change if a game does tell you what the item does in advance, or is it a legit gameplay difference, and you're "cheating" if you look them up in a game that doesn't display them?

then it wouldn't offer you anything really. if anything it might take away some of the discovery aspects of witness (only some - it doesn't really have anywhere near as many mechanics as the real game) but there's no reason to play it if you haven't played witness anyway

i got stuck at a boss on mmbn3 that i could swear was like, absolutely unbeatable and 10x harder than anything i'd encountered in the games (beyond secret post-game bosses which i didn't do)

but also it was just a random story boss like 1/3rd through the game so there must have been something wrong with me for not being able to do it because there wouldn't just be a difficulty spike like that out of nowhere?

I could be remembering wrong. Maybe it is more the first.

oh. well, i like simplicity in games. but it's been maybe almost 10 years since i last played MMBN1 so maybe it's too outdated now. i never played 4/5/6 either.

As for other games, how's 428: Shibuya Scramble if I prefer my VNs to have a decent puzzle element (like Zero Escape, Danganronpa or Ace Attorney)? Kind of mostly the latter from what I recall. "Oh man, by making this character take a phone call they go out on the street and happen to bump into this other person who drops something now..." or whatever. You can't really know. Sometimes you can, but I wouldn't really say puzzle in that way.

definitely play that before trying eden, like para said eden is just way faster-paced and harder. i've beaten two MMBN games and i can barely handle the tutorial of eden.

I've never really gotten into the "VGM scene" because for me I only start to like a song after hearing it multiple times in-game - I need time to develop an attachment. I'm not sure any of my current 9/10 or 10/10 songs would even have made an impact on me if I heard them for the first time randomly from a youtube link.

or another example - is it cheating if I close and reload a Roguelike game mid-level when I'm about to die, and it restarts me at the beginning of the level?

It's not built in to the game - you have to quit and restart to do it.

But they could've saved every time you do an action, like Darkest Dungeon does, and the devs chose not to, so...

let's say i make a game, and i put in a menu called "Accessibility Menu" that lets you have invincibility and kill enemies in one hit.

then one day i change my mind and i rename the menu to "Cheat Menu" but i change nothing else.

is it cheating now to give yourself god mode but it wouldn't be cheating if it was called Accessibility?

if i play the SNES version with save states is that different than playing the Wii Retro Shop version that is exactly the same but has save states built in? did i cheat in one but not the other?

Cheats are allowed in video games. You can choose not to use them, but the fact that you feel the need to determine the legitimacy of someone's "beating" of a game is definitely gatekeeping and elitism. I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, but that's what it is.

Cheating isn't allowed in a test because the administrators will punish you if they catch you. So you didn't really pass.

What if I download some mock exams at home and I cheat on them and I get 100%? Did I pass the test...? No one will punish me. Cheating is allowed.

i mean part of the issue is we don't have the vocabulary to differentiate whether someone "beat" a game with outside help or not

it's like people who don't know if they can say they "read" a book if they listened to the audio version or if watching a full playthrough of a gameplay-less VN counts as having "played" it

savestates and cheats are one case. but what about using a guide?

if i used a walkthrough to tell me every step in a turn-based puzzle game... did i "beat" it?

context matters here. if i categorize Baba is You as "beaten" on my backlog tracker, even though i used a guide for every step, is that a lie? it's pretty different than if someone says "what's the toughest puzzle game you beat?" and i answer "Baba is You".

its only elitism if the person thinks they're better than you for having beaten it without save states. not "better at the game", but like, better morally, or just better as a human being.

I'm sort of only just realizing right now that the games don't actually have numbers. I never noticed. Huh.

i've tried to play this game a couple times as well and this is how i felt. like damn this is like 5x faster than battle network, and that's just in the tutorial!

I'd never have tried to find them all, but you could take a look at them in a guide, some of them are quite clever.

well after my speculation on the new passive it was pretty underwhelming. just more of the same stats. oh well. powerful item though.

stage 5 was pretty tough, i died horribly my first few times because i had gotten used to how easy the first four stages are with powerups, had to actually make sure i had a good build and not get greedy. really survive by the skin of your teeth a lot in the first 15 minutes.

yeah i mean we straight up don't even reach our prog point more than a couple pulls a night at this point lol. it's going to be brutal if people mess up wrath/death once we're on phase 6, but we've actually practiced them in xivsim so i feel they won't be as big of an issue as the random nidhogg deaths lol

I'm stuck in phase 5 because my static only does 9 hours a week and we've had multiple nights of fill-ins and just a couple of people who... take a bit too long to perfect mechanics, causing random deaths to "Oops I forgot to take my tower" over and over some nights.

me, only vaguely interested since i haven't played a digimon game or watched it since i was like 10, flipping through the trailer at random, landing at 5:18 : what the fuck is that

and if they add a passive item i hope its a good one tbh

spinach, duplicator, book, area, duration, and sooometimes bracer just outclass the other ones because they actually add to your offensive capability.

though i've had surprisingly decent runs before with armor+pumarola (+metaglio left) letting me stand inside enemies constantly and still not have my HP drop, so maybe i'm too biased against the non-offensive ones.

though i really like clover and its flexibility, i can't be certain exactly what effect its having. but it does power up some weps and the increased chance of food makes it almost a better sustain option than the actual healing stuff.

i guess they can't be actually. if there's 5 question marks and 2 are for the new weapon and its evo.

maybe they're going to add some super rare weapons you can randomly chance into.

will the last 4 weapons be evolutions of the last 4? i hope so, i hate using weapons without an evolution which makes me reluctant to play those 4 characters, though they are still pretty good on their own, and +3 projectiles is a crazy good passive.

Hm, any predictions on the new powerup though? If they're adding a weapon with an evolution is there any sort of stat left for a passive item...? I wonder.
