I think that there's a difference between being "in public" and engagements that are like on the jumbotron or in the middle of a performance or something. If you're just at a public park, maybe some people overhear you and gawk a little, but I think there's less of that public pressure to say "yes" in the moment.

I'll never get the whole 'I'm not paying for other people's healthcare' argument, because unless you're sat on piles of cash to pay for all your healthcare needs out of pocket, insurance works the exact same way.

They view insurance as a "risk assessment" that they're probably always winning.

Like when you're deciding whether or not to get the 3 year protection plan on a TV, you don't view the pay out from that as "buying the TV with other people's money".

Obviously the three main differences between them is that health care prices are basically made up, priced in a way that assumes everyone has insurance, most people are likely to get more covered by health insurance in their lifetime than they pay for the insurance (you can imagine that a three year replacement plan on a $1k TV would be a lot higher if most people had to use it before the three years were up), and lastly that health care should be a human right.

It's "surprising" in the sense that many GOP members didn't actually have to present their opinion on situations like this before because abortion being legal meant they could use that as cover for not having to adjudicate specific situations.

Like, it still shouldn't be super surprising that they held those beliefs in private before this, but having to get on record for a non-hypothetical is different. Though you've already seen right wing people try to define every case of abortion that they are fine with as "not abortion".

Is it bad to tailor a meta-narrative through multiple different avenues.

I think there's a difference between trying to find an effective argument for a person and camouflaging your real "arguments".

If I think that Star Wars Episode 7 is a poorly made movie and I try to appeal to whatever your particular film craft "priorities" are, my arguments are at least supporting my true thoughts, even if I might care less about the problems with sound editing than I do with the cinematography but used sound editing as my argument.

If I think that Star Wars Episode 7 is a bad movie because Star Wars went woke by having a woman and a black person as the two leads, but I try to appeal to in terms of film craft, I'm probably just avoiding the fact that if I actually led with that you would not talk to me.

In the abortion example, it would even be reasonable if you said "I don't think women should have the right to abortion, but even if I did it shouldn't have been decided on privacy grounds". At least you're owning your stance with that one. The other one just feels a lot like people who try to imply that they aren't against gay marriage/slavery/etc. but are just strong proponents of state's rights.

The closest thing that I've come up with is just "ulterior motives" but I don't think that encapsulates it completely.

Examples:
"It's actually good that Roe v Wade was overturned, because it was settled on privacy grounds rather than as a matter of bodily autonomy" [Speaker is actually anti-abortion]

Person doesn't like [movie]. Person presents legitimate issues with movie as cancellable, when in reality they don't like it for reasons that people don't empathize with.

If all he had to do to leave the contract was pay $1B he would've done it a month or so ago.

Twitter has him by the balls on several issues, but the biggest one is that he signed several clauses that essentially said he wouldn't hold them liable even if the information they gave him was false. So to turn around and claim that Twitter has more bots than he expected would have already been a flimsy excuse, but to also be bound by this clause means he's flailing.

Right, I'm just saying to the "It should be a percentage of your wealth" people that that number was negotiated, rather than being a statutory thing.

A bit of both. Sunak as Chancellor and Javid as Health Secretary were classes as "Cabinet Ministers" - they had major jobs that were considered a part of the innermost circle of government - they'd be analogous to the SoD.

Other Ministers were in charge of departments but not considered as "major" - they're Ministers of State, but on a tier lower than Secretaries of State, while other resignations still were Parliamentary Secretaries, the third tier who, work in Ministers of State's departments.

All are - and continue to be - elected MPs and hold a seat in Parliament, represent a constituency, carry a parliamentary vote etc., but they no longer have a role in Johnson's government.

So Johnson still has a clear majority in Parliament (not that they still support him), that hasn't changed, but until these roles are filled in the coming days, he effectively doesn't have a functioning government. I believe there's something like 170-180 governmental positions across the various tiers, so roughly a quarter have resigned over the last 30 hours (some, admittedly, replaced already).

Makes sense, thanks!

You're completely oblivious if you think the "average person" holds crypto or more specifically to the recent topic, that the average person is invested in Celsius.

Slayer_22 posted...
It's a very simple, very easily understood concept that seems to fly over people's head in this very topic. Regular people refers to people who are, you know, not rich or wealthy or well off that put money into crypto as an investment hoping to make more money. No different from the average Joe that puts it into stocks or gambles with hopes of getting more money so they can be better off. It's an addictive mindset.

I advocate for social solutions that help people in situations where they feel like they need to turn to gambling in order to live. Gambling isn't a solution, though it can be a fun activity in moderation. When there were regulatory cutbacks on a lot of daily fantasy gambling, I didn't cry about how there are people who need that to be better off.

You do not, in ANY way, shape, or form, have to shill for crypto. I don't see what people misunderstand about this. Everyone acts like every human being involved needs to shill for it to actually participate, like it's part of your job. Most people do NOT. I've never once shilled for ANY sort of crypto, nor did I ever advise anyone to put their life savings into crypto or anything of the sorts...yet I'm apparently a scammer for just putting money into it(and apparently creating it, which is news to me, but that's beside the point).

When you personally profit off of crypto, who is losing out? Do you think the other end of all your trades are venture capitalists or other retail investors?

Slayer_22 posted...

f***. Off.

Show some f***ing empathy.

No, I'm not going to say "Lol I love that people killed themselves over Luna crashing". You didn't even attempt to address the point that if Luna didn't collapse when it did, it would have crashed harder (and likely led to *more* suicides) when it eventually did. It was completely unsustainable.

What do you think should have happened with Luna? What is your preferred outcome? If it's just "Oh Luna should have just kept growing forever then you're either a fool or are doing exactly what I accused you of: saying that a scam like Luna should have stuck around because there were some good people who were invested in it.

I am talking about the people who lose their money that they put into crypto, not earned money.

So let me get this straight. You feel zero sympathy for people who could have been possibly taken advantage of? You feel zero sympathy simply because crypto is a thing, and for no discernable reason, you must hate everyone involved in the sphere of 'crypto'? Even if they were taken advantage of?

The lack of empathy from this topic, and even the lack of understanding of words written in my posts, is truly, truly astounding. I've never seen people so heartlessly throw people's feelings away with zero empathy due to something so simple as crypto. Ugh.

I feel like you've set up a framework where bad things must be allowed to persist in order to protect "good people".

Sure I have empathy for the person near retirement whose nephew convinced them that it was just free money to move that money over into crypto investments. If you believe that crypto is some combination of bubble and scam though, it *not* failing right now just changes the set of people who get stuck holding the bag and likely (because the longer the scam succeeds the more "regular" people it draws in) increases the number of people who are harmed by the collapse.

Think of an actual literal pyramid scheme that requires each person to find 5 people in order to not lose their money. When you get to the fourth layer, you're talking 625 people who are at risk of losing their money. At this point, maybe you start to actually have people conned into joining, etc. You're asking for people to cry about these 625 people when we're "celebrating" the collapse before the next 3125 people are stuck in this same situation.

That's even ignoring the fact that in this space, the poor people who are being taken advantage of are only not getting taken advantage of by taking advantage of someone else. At that point, why am I feeling worse for the current victims than I would for *their* would-be victims?

Not really... There are plenty of days that people don't get off... If you want to be mad at someone, you'd have to be mad at the employers...

The "it's for the rich" is a dumb non-sequitur anyway. Rich salaried people don't need a federal holiday in order to take the day off.

I mean the name is kinda lackluster since it hinges on the literal day its celebrated instead of anything else. Which I dont think other holidays do.

I think more people say "4th of July" than "Independence Day".

New Year's literally celebrates an artificial point on the calendar.

I remember my Grandfather once noting that he almost never got Veterans day off.

Veteran's Day is also a federal holiday though. Maybe he should have taken it up with his employer.

I dont really gaf, but these people should be shorting Bitcoin if theyre so certain it will fail. Then they would at least have a stake in it. Otherwise theyre no better than your standard s***poster.

Even with a general downward trend your short positions can get liquidated with volatile assets. E.g. on Wednesday, Bitcoin's value increased by 10% before falling back to where it started. You also need people on the other side of your short order.

I feel like the more that people prefer the adaptation to the original, the more the original author tends to have some arbitrary reason why actually the adaptation isn't just worse but a travesty.

The people that get their wallets "hacked" are just giving their seed phrases away

There have also been plenty of vulnerabilities in wallet software/smart contracts/etc. that have allowed people to "hack" peoples money in ways that don't just involve user stupidity (unless we keep pushing the buck to "well you should have done a security audit of Metamask before using it"). There's also malware designed to steal things like seed phrases off of people's computers.

But the other aspect is...in computer/cybersecurity "your user might be stupid" is something you have to deal with and widespread adoption of cryptocurrency requires your average person to be comfortable with some of these concepts. There are so many people in the United States who have weak banking passwords, but it doesn't lead to constant hacking of bank accounts to the same degree. Why? Because there's fraud protection, reversability of transactions, etc.

People buy stocks with the belief they can sell it for more later.

People buy baseball cards with the belief they can sell it for more later.

People buy paintings with the belief they can sell it for more later.

Are these all scams as well?

Just to address the baseball cards analogy, if people were encouraging me to put my savings in baseball cards that would give off similar scammy vibes.

Also as a card game analogue, a MTG clone came out a year or two ago called Flesh and Blood that was mostly capitalizing on "You know how a Black Lotus is worth a ton of money now? What if you could get in on the ground level with a new IP". Most people called it a bubble or a scam at the time as well. This isn't a unique accusation levied against only crypto. And even those cards still have a functional purpose, even if it's to play a game most people don't care about.

The analogy for baseball cards vs crypto is also like...imagine if every person who bought baseball cards only was doing so in hopes of selling those cards to other people who were buying them in hopes that they could sell them to other people, etc. etc. Do you think that framework could last?

They can run back the same playbook as they did with gay marriage/gay panic/etc. but its a much smaller group so you don't run into the pesky "knowing a normal person who is trans" problem as much as you do "knowing a normal person who is gay".
