Topic | Getting paid $200 and I get a free brain MRI? |
COVxy 04/06/22 7:39:21 PM #24 | The scanning sequence that tracks blood oxygenation (BOLD) to understand brain function produced an artifact in the data. So all of the data tracking brain function coming from that center had it. The artifact was dead center in the frequency band where you expect to see real signal, so if you tried to remove it, it removed the real signal as well. More or less, their functional MRI data was borked in a pretty unrecoverable manner. Head of the center didn't think it was an issue because they were still seeing the effects they expected. They were definitely wrong. Then I gave up trying to help them. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] |
Topic | Getting paid $200 and I get a free brain MRI? |
COVxy 04/06/22 6:37:32 PM #13 | rivers posted... I'd like that a lot. I took part in a couple of studies at the University of Michigan when I lived nearby, but unfortunately never got in on anything involving brain imaging. I worked on some data coming out of the UM imaging center during grad school. Their BOLD sequence was producing a GIGANTIC artifact that completely overwhelmed the data. Despite throughly characterizing it and demonstrating that it was essentially fatal for function imaging scans, the heads of the center didn't care too much lol. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] |

COVxy 04/06/22 5:45:54 PM #9 | MFBKBass5 posted... Think its more for creating a normal brain database. Theyre logging a bunch of fairly young, in shape men and women without any major health conditions to compare to different brains by people with various conditions theyre studying, like Alzheimers or something. Ah, there's just different MRI sequences that highlight different properties of tissues. So I was wondering if you knew what of those they were going to be collecting. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] |

Topic | People raised in rural/suburban areas have better spacial navigation than city |
COVxy 04/05/22 12:28:57 PM #4 | Makes sense. In a grid like city layout, all you have to do is move in orthogonal axes. City block distance means that as long as you are getting closer to the target, you're moving in an optimal fashion. So you don't need to plan the whole route, you just need to know how many blocks in each direction, and then move in any random order. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] |

Topic | My professor is an ass and decided to punish the whole class |
COVxy 04/01/22 4:49:39 PM #28 | I mean, it's just blatently silly. In no universe composing humans, real life actual humans and not cartoons, does a professor get revenge on a class for beating the mean by 10 points by spending hours constructing a new test. The motive is fucking stupid and the idea that a professor would waste their time like that is ludicrous. What's more likely the case is that the first exam was largely easy review material, which is deceptively easy in comparison to the rest of the course. Students got surprised by the difficulty of the real material, and a "i bet he made it really hard to get back at us for beating the mean on the first exam" spread its way through gullible students who view professors as adversaries for making them learn things. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] |

COVxy 04/01/22 3:33:56 PM #24 | buddhamonster posted... What about grading schemes meant to inflict pain on the students without actually teaching them anything? Care to explain what good habits this is instilling in the students? Not sure anyone has a full story here. I've been told I provided questions on exams that "were totally new material" just because the questions required students to think about the material rather than just regurgitate it. I sincrely doubt the professor gave an entire exam of inappropriate material and will just leave the grades as is. Doesn't sound plausible to me, and if it sounds plausible to you, you might want to consider how you are viewing your professors. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] |

Topic | wow GME is squeezing again, at $170 today. |
COVxy 03/30/22 4:11:21 PM #54 | Yesterday, March 29th, at 09:37:57.425888 GME was halted limit-down after trading at $182.79 at 9:37:57.402 off-exchange. The high price for the day had printed at $199.41, first at 09:34:58.508 (off-exchange) and then finally at 09:35:02.893 4 seconds later. This is a decline from the high of $16.62 or 8.3%, in almost 3 minutes. The halt was a result of the NBBO crossing below the Lower Price Band as determined by Limit-Up/Limit-Down, better explained here. Basically, the National Best Bid crossed 5% below a reference price, which is the arithmetic mean of the last 5 minutes of trades.
