I was looking for a factoid about Xrd's graphics on TV Tropes, and I came across this under Visual Effects of Awesome:

Guilty Gear Xrd runs on the Unreal Engine, an engine known for 30 FPS "realistic" games when used for console games. They made it work at 60 FPS with a more stylized look reminiscent of past GG games, the 3D models lacking tween animations making them appear to move more like 2D sprites. This allows the game to look and move like a 2D sprite-based fighter while also allowing for dynamic camera angles for certain moves that other 2D games can't accomplish. Needless to say, it looks amazing, even at ludicrously high resolutions on PC.

Also @ #4, yeah. Guilty Gear 1, X, XX and then Xrd. Like Third X.

The context surrounding Xrd's announcement is pretty wild.

The last Guilty Gear fighting game was released in 2006. There were re-releases coming out up to 2009 with the Accent Core games, and even +R coming out in 2012. But the first original game since Guilty Gear XX was actually a weird hack and slash looking thing, and it only had Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske in it as far as Guilty Gear characters go.

The reason why is because Sega owned the rest of the franchise. Daisuke Ishiwatari created the series and did the music, but the IP itself belonged to a company named Sammy which published the first game. Sega owned Sammy's game catalogue, so Arc System Works got screwed out of Guilty Gear - the characters, the music, the setting all belonged to Sega.

Arc System Works moved onto BlazBlue, but it was a much different beast to Guilty Gear. It was way more anime-focused - Guilty Gear was anime, sure, but it was more of a classic gritty shonen whereas BlazBlue always came off as a more shiny, modern shonen with really egregious anime tropes and edgy names like Ragna the Bloodedge. I tried to get into the music, but I never could.

In my case, I was listening to a lot of the OST and wanting a new game to come out during this period of time. But with the copyright shenanigans, and Daisuke Ishiwatari apparently being done with the franchise because of what Sega had done to it, there wasn't much hope. Guilty Gear was one of those awesome niche franchises that kicked a mountain of ass and died during the shift to the HD era. It happens.

So imagine you're listening to the OST on and off for years, having played XX as much as you can and reflecting on how cool it is. Maybe you were a fan when the games were coming out, maybe you got in after the ship had sailed on Guilty Gear. Either way, you're convinced the series is dead.

Then this trailer drops.

https://youtu.be/urUM2Ne_vTw

Okay, so the 7 year drought is over. That alone is awesome.

But what really sells the hype is the presentation. Specifically, the moment where the characters attack, and the camera rotates around them.

Guilty Gear has always been a sprite-based anime fighter. It's an awesome sprite-based anime fighter, one of the best, but you're used to that flat perspective with detailed backgrounds.

Guilty Gear Xrd is still a 2D fighter. But you can see how the trailer is framed. The characters look like 2D sprites, they look painted.

And then the CAMERA FUCKING PANS AROUND THEM, because those flat 2D images are actually fully rendered 3D models. Can you fucking imagine what that was like, seeing it for the first time?

And like sure, maybe you don't get the hype because this has become something of a standard of quality when it comes to 2D fighters. Games like this were around in 2014, Skullgirls was around I think and the Mortal Kombat games had brought 2.5D fighters back into vogue with MK9.

but a cel-shaded anime-esque fighting game was borderline unheard of - especially with this level of visual fidelity. Arc System Works was one of the first companies to do this. The way they animated smear frames in 3D was unheard of. And the music fucked hard - I was looking up unofficial edits of Heavy Day for months after this trailer released.

Guilty Gear is one of the biggest fighters on the planet right now, STRIVE sold six times more copies in a year than the Xrd games sold in their entire lifetimes. But to be a fan between 2007 and 2014 was like living in the desert. When the announcement trailer dropped, it was like the first rain of the decade. It was so fucking awesome.

Can you post a trailer that was not only as hype as the Xrd announcement, but which also followed through as well as Xrd did? I really wanna see more hype moments after revisiting Xrd. It was so fucking cool.

I think 2013 or 2014 was when Killer Instinct was announced too, this was a good era for fighting games. We never know how good we had it until it was gone, lol.

So idk how the postal votes are going, but it the figures from last night are holding up, the LNP were crippled by this election. Labor have almost 20 more seats than them in parliament, and if the Greens and at least half of the independents play ball with a minority Labor government, the Liberals will hopefully be unable to get a word in edgewise.

I know that the media is gonna be hardcore nuts to butts right out of the gate, making the Labor government out as lazy and ineffective and shitty. But I'm hoping that this will be the start of a new Australia.

We're seeing a tremendous amount of independent candidates winning seats this election, meaning fresh blood in the political system and a genuine representation of the Australian people through their nominated representatives. We're seeing a party that's hopefully going to form a federal corruption body, and a fully independent one at that - the Morrison government proposed an anti-corruption watchdog that could go after all other politicians except for the Morrison government.

We've elected a man who spent 26 years in politics, during which he held the office of Minister of Infrastructure and Transport. He delivered every project on time and under budget. Contrast that with the Sydney tram line, which is over-budget by $150 million and has faced numerous delays. We've had a Liberal premier get booted out of office after being dragged in front of a corruption hearing. We've had morons like Barnaby Joyce taking six-figure sums of money for projects, pissing off for months and failing to reduce a report. Under our last Labor government, Australia ranked as the 9th least corrupt nation in the world - under the LNP, we sank to #19.

I want this so badly to be the start of a new Australian government. One where politicians do their jobs for more than 12 days a year, where everything they say in parliament isn't choked by parliamentary privilege. I want to see Question Time airing on TV again. I want transparency, and I want legislation that's announced and explained for the common Australian instead of being snuck in the back door by a bunch of frauds.

I can't say whether this Labor government is the one that I'm looking for. But I think that Anthony Albanese is a good man with a solid track record, I think nerfing those LNP fucks is a step in the right direction, and I'm cautiously optimistic about the direction Labor will take this country.

Did Rupert Murdoch factor into this s*** at all?
When Labor comes out on top instead of Liberal, Murdoch prefers to call it a tight race until the last second where they side with the Labor party. Then the next three years involve Murdoch media outlets putting the thumb screws to the Labor party, occasionally making shit up (like the hairdryer debacle where it was alleged that Kevin Rudd yelled at an air hostess over a hair dryer, or Utegate where it was alleged that Kevin Rudd sold a ute to a friend for a low price) and otherwise sensationalising news about the Labor party being shit while they give a pass to the Liberal party.

I'm in the US, so pardon my ignorance on Australian politics. Care to summarize why this guy is a shithead? Not defending him; I legitimately don't even know who he is.
Remember when Ted Cruz left Texas during that huge freeze to go to Cancun?

Imagine if Joe Biden did the same thing while half of the country burned or froze.

Australia faced our worst bushfires in recorded history. The east coast of Australia was blanketed in smoke for about a month. We lost 3 billion animals, and a ton of our most diverse ecosystems were completely lost in these fires.

These fires were burning since September 2019, and they only got worse and worse each month leading into December. Our firefighters were underfunded, we didn't have the equipment or manpower to fight these fires, and it came out later that we had climate scientists and senior members from the rural fire services warning the Liberal government about these fires for years only for the LNP to continue to cut funding to them.

In late November, when these fires were getting to the point where you could view them from space, Scott Morrison left the country to go to Hawaii.

When the fires reached their peak and became the worst fires in recorded Australian history - a record it continued to gain all the way into February of 2020 - people were baffled that Scott Morrison hadn't made a statement. Then the rumours that he was on a holiday came through. His office said that he was in the country.

Then photos came out of him in Hawaii at a 5 star resort. At this point, we had photos of people escaping into the sea on dinghies while their entire towns burned.

Scott Morrison finally came back like a week afterwards, when smoke from these fires were swamping over every major city in New South Wales and Victoria. And he tried to turn the devastated communities into a photo op, where rightfully outraged townspeople asked what the fuck he was going to do to help them rebuild their towns that had turned completely to ash.

https://youtu.be/az4lkKjAsdI

That's one of the major fuckups of his prime ministership.

Other things done under his rule include:

* The government refusing to quarantine the first people in Australia who were Covid-positive

* Overseeing sports grants going to affluent areas of the country because they were in Liberal seats that they wanted to keep happy, rather than to smaller clubs that needed the grant money

* A defamation lawsuit for one of the most powerful men in the country being assisted by the Fixated Persons Unit, an anti-terror taskforce

* A state premier - second to the PM in terms of power for their respective states - being brought in on corruption charges for assisting a corrupt mayor doing dirty deals with property developers

I always thought Tony Abbott was going to be the worst Prime Minister of my lifetime. He's still close to being scum, but he has the guts to put on a uniform and battle bushfires as a volunteer firefighter - while Scomo was out of the country, Abbott was fighting the worst bushfires in Australia's recorded history. That's something positive for the Australian people. Scott Morrison is just scum. He and his ilk are concerned with corruption and lying to make themselves look better.

Man who Sold the World has been pretty good too! Not as much of a surprise with Savior Machine and Black Country Rock, but the title track has grown on me thanks to Midge Ure's version from MGSV. It's got a lot of rock stylings on it.

Looking at the next album, it looks like it's got more pop balladry on it. Changes and Life on Mars are all-time GOAT songs, but it's a departure from these first two albums I feel like - at least those two songs are.

I did a deep dive into David Bowie when I was a teenager. Some of the silly folk tunes on his debut album are kinda cute, but with his self-titled second album he really solidified himself as a force to be reckoned with. And not just because of Space Oddity - I love that song, but I've heard it so much I barely feel anything when I hear it.

Revisiting Unwashed and Slightly Dazed, Cygnet Committee and Letter to Hermione has been a real trip. Since I first heard this music, I've latched onto a lot of folky-sounding bands - the Mountain Goats, Counting Crows, the Weakerthans and the Weepies. The songs on this album remind me a bunch of those bands, but the instrumentals remind me a bit of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? Like it's jammy and rocky and groovy.

Bowie goes pop in the wake of Space Oddity. He doesn't fully abandon this folky sort of vibe completely, songs like Savior Machine are really wild and tell a story and it's cool, but I feel like this album has a feel all of its own. It's folky and proggy and jammy, and it's unique in Bowie's discography.

I never really appreciated the album before. Like I said, I've heard Space Oddity so much that I don't feel anything when I listen to it. But the rest of it, the stuff I neglected for years? It's legitimately really fucking good.

There's no way. Surely. Labor have to win
That's what I thought last election.

I'm hopeful that we're getting a Labor government. But between the Greens contesting more Labor seats than LNP ones and the United Australia Party tricking gullible morons into voting for them - despite their preferencing of the LNP days before the election, because of fucking course that's their game plan - it's probably going to be more contested than I'd like.

Last election was a "miracle" election for the LNP based on the way the election was reported in the media. People liked the LNP more than they liked Bill Shorten because it was all buttering the LNP up and tearing down Bill Shorten.

This election, as clear cut as the Liberal Party's corruption and shittiness has been, is being reported by Nine-Fairfax - run by Peter Costello - and Newscorp - Rupert Murdoch. We have the UAP muddying the waters, we have the Greens targeting Labor seats.

I have faith that Labor will win, but it will come at the cost that most of the country has been fed Labor gaffes and denied a clear picture of their policies and values. The results will probably be so close that the Labor government can't make serious changes without crossbenchers and independents threatening to put them into minority government.

Yup. I wish people would have taken the Liberals down a peg, but the most disappointing lesson I've learned is how short term people's memories are about political issues.

Like Gladys Berejiklian lost her job due to corruption hearings, Scomo left Australia during the Black Summer bushfires and was shunned by the victims when he came back for a photo op, and they keep opening up people's superannuation so people can spend their retirement savings for basic necessities - further bankrupting the average working class Australian when they eventually have to retire.

Scott Morrison takes credit for shit he doesn't do, and he shirks responsibility when he fucks up. And they have the gall to ask if Labor has what it takes to lead. Coming from the government who rank #19 on a list of least corrupt nations, when Australia under the Labor party ranked #9. The media in this country is a fucking joke, and I'm going to be depressed beyond all measure if this cocksucker and his party of crooks gets another term.

This was such a well articulated post and super interesting read and I had thought for a moment you had a brilliant first hand look into how all sides of media are complete bullshit and make you want to believe one specific thing.

And then you regurgitated the same narrative the NY article states painting a world where there are no criminals anymore and ACAB
Of course there are criminals, and those criminals deserve to be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

What I'm saying is that news media like this will drag anything in to make a criminal seem like a movie villain deserving of treatment like this. You can tackle a criminal to the ground like it's an action movie and fuck up so bad that the crook gets set on fire, and it's still okay for the police to do that because they were "neutralising a threat".

One shithead moved to my town and worked on tech he was planning to sell to terrorists. He was arrested and prosecuted. That led to my town being labelled an extremist hotbed where race war was on the verge of boiling over.

You can see it with George Floyd, where prior arrests made it okay for some piece of shit to kneel on his neck until he stopped breathing - even though the stop was because of some funny money, not fentanyl possession or aggravated robbery. You can be killed by a police officer for a non-violent offence because at one point, months ago, you might have been at risk of drug-induced psychosis if confronted.

Rags like the Daily Mail make it seem like the police can shoot, tackle and beat their way through a wave of criminal scum because they're puppy-kicking bank robbers and rapists. And incidents in that vein, where we're too busy discussing the merits of striking first, distract from other crime stats like how many domestic violence claims aren't prosecuted or how many non-violent offences lead to disproportionate prison sentences. Actual facets of crime, in America and abroad, shielded by a schoolyard discussion over whether it's okay for a police officer to come in hot on a person for the sole fact that they broke the law - not based on their actual crime, the sole fact that they broke the law.

In my case? One man's guilt painted an entire demographic of people as violent insurrectionists out to hurt innocent people. In cases like this? The fact that someone committed any crime at all, at any point in history, makes it acceptable for police to behave any way they want.

That's the point I was trying to make. This police officer acted disproportionately, and now a man is in a coma with most of his skin missing. The sole fact that he committed a crime is enough for tabloid rags like the Daily Mail to justify most of his skin being burnt off by police incompetence.

its never okay to judge a whole group bc of the actions of a few.
The whole Russian army is invading the Ukraine. The whole group has the goal of taking Ukraine and assimilating it into Russia, at the cost of civilian lives and national sovereignty. And the whole group takes on the responsibility of the crimes committed in the name of that invasion.

The acts of rape and murder committed by the Russian army are furthered by the whole army, whether individual soldiers themselves are rapists or civilian murderers or not. They're an aggressive invading force. This is the sort of shit they're doing because they can. You can go "well ackshully" about whether each individual solider us a rapist, but the Russian army is raping civilians and killing them. That's something that the whole group has to contend with.

Did every American soldier rape civilians or illegally kill prisoners during the War on Terror? No. The institution that facilitated that abuse and covered it up is still responsible, and the people who suffered under American occupation have the right to level that criticism against the American military. The same goes for Russia now - Russians are raping and killing Ukranian civilians, and the people suffering from that can and should attribute that violence to Russia and the military under which that behavior is happening.

20+ years from now when the fighting is over - hopefully - and the surviving Russian soldiers overwhelmingly say that this wasn't a war they wanted and they regret the actions they committed under Putin's rule, we can have a nuanced and respectful discussion about responsibility and trauma and respect. The western world has Vietnam as our failed war where we murdered, raped and pillaged, and we understand the soldiers as pawns of larger political players who bore the brunt of the criticism as they came home. This could be similar - conscripted Russian soldiers fighting a war they don't believe in.

But let's get one thing straight.

As it's happening now? The Russian army is committing war crimes. Soldiers are raping and killing civilians. The Ukrainians, understandably, view the Russians as rapists and murderers. The fact that this military aggression is completely unnecessary except for Russian nationalistic vanity and a military advantage that wouldn't matter unless Russia planned to wage more war after this only compounds that.

We can go "don't judge an entire group by the actions of a few", but rape and murder is happening under the banner of the Russian army, and the responsibility of those actions apply to the entire army. As an invading force levelling that violence against a defensive civilian nation? It is fitting to attribute rape and murder to the Russian army. The people marching under that banner have to live with that.

Bart had birthdays. So did Lisa. So did many characters.
Bart is still in the fourth grade, and Lisa is still in the second grade. Episodes also skip ahead two or three years at a time for a joke, like the one where Marge gets a new kitchen and enters a cooking competition, and the episodes don't acknowledge that this actually happened because it's a joke.

The characters have birthdays, but they still don't age between episodes and the status quo doesn't change - just like Pokemon. The criticism is valid.

The Simpsons have non-canonical flashforward episodes, sure. But that's not the same thing. Bart has been a dead-end male stripper, a morbidly obese man who washes himself with a rag on a stick, a mooching deadbeat who smokes weed, and a supreme court justice. There's no continuity, outside of a handful of differing timelines like the ones with Bart's girlfriend Zelda.

Also regarding the Daily Mail discourse - first of all, let's understand that both the Daily Mail and New York Post are reactionary tabloid tags whose main function is to sensationalize news stories to whip their audiences into a frenzy. The fact that CE has delved so deeply into NY Post article sources since I've started posting here is fucking stupid.

Secondly, if we're talking about the veracity of the Daily Mail, I have personal experience with them blowing up a fake story for clicks.

I live in a town with a high Muslim population. At one point, a guy got arrested for designing a missile system for ISIS - one guy who had moved here from Sydney, who was working on technology in his shed, who was arrested by the police thankfully. Fucked up thing to do, absolutely.

We had three news sources reporting on the culture of my town. The first one was A Current Affair, a "gotcha"-type tabloid news program that goes after dole bludgers and dodgy tradies. The second was the Daily Telegraph, a Rupert Murdoch-owned paper that had previously painted my town as a radical extremist shithole where men were selling their daughters into child marriages. And the third was the Daily Mail.

These three news sources came to my town with the express goal of painting our town's Muslim population as a standoffish population who refused to assimilate into the community, and to outright state that tensions were at a tipping point and it felt like violence was going to erupt at any point. At least one of these news sources used the term "race war".

One dirty trick A Current Affair did was they had a man with a camera crew sitting outside a local business that was owned and run by a Muslim man. The crew blocked off the door so no customers would come in, and he kept opening and closing the front door to get the Muslim guy angry. They wanted footage of an angry Muslim man pushing them away and slamming the door in their face - I was working next door to the business, and my boss went over and gave them a piece of her mind.

Another dirty trick, which the Daily Telegraph pulled and which the Daily Mail ripped off for their article, was they put a reporter in the main Street to ask people loaded questions about the Muslim population and how aggressive they were. They were down the street all day, stopping people to ask them about the Muslim population.

And a majority of the people they stopped? The bulk of foot traffic in my town, on a busy weekday afternoon? They said that the Muslim population was fine and that they'd.nevwr had any problems with any Muslim residents of my town.

The sources they used in the article were two people - two elderly people with chips on their shoulders - talking about how there was going to be fighting in the streets because the Muslims weren't assimilating and because they were only getting angrier and more standoffish.

Keep in mind, a ton of Muslim families have lived here for as long as I have, or longer. My family moved here in 1996. These families have settled, they own businesses, I went to school with Muslim children from these families. They are as much a part of this community - perhaps moreso - than I am, or any other white person I know. And the majority of the people interviewed reflected that fact.

But they picked the two people who had something bad to say about Muslims to fluff up their news pieces about how my town was an extremist shithole where Muslims were about to start roving the town in gangs and beating any white person they saw. They painted it as a breeding ground for radicalisation and sharia law. A Current Affair spread that message state-wide, and The Daily Telegraph spread that message nation-wide.

The Daily Mail took that perspective to a global audience.

If you want to stand by the NY Post or the Daily Mail, go ahead. But you have to cop to the fact that both sources are sensationalized tabloids that lie and inflate claims to make an emotionally manipulative point to make you think the world is worse than it actually is, because they know if they can trap you in a worldview where every potential criminal is a gun-toting, child-stabbing monster, you will feel safer when a police officer bowls one of them over, gets gasoline on them and fires a taser that burns their fucking skin off.

Yeah, I still don't think this guy deserved to go into a coma after having his skin burned off. That's not the law being enforced, that's the police doing whatever fucked up shit they want because they think they're judge, jury and executioner.

Fucking lol. Yeah, they're gonna ban farming without a permit in Australia. What a moron.

I don't get why Australia has been the target of this far-right American backlash lately. First we don't exist, then you want to invade us to free us of government tyranny, now our tyranny has gotten so bad we can't even grow our own crops. And it's so fucking funny because these fuckwits don't realise that we're under a conservative government. Less funny are the actual crimes and examples of corruption that our government have committed, but it's still really amusing when these mouthbreathers would absolutely be simping for this shithole government if they lived here.

Shit, we had the Ted Cruz Cancun incident but worse. Our head of state was on holiday when Australia's worst bushfires in recorded history were taking place - they had been burning for months beforehand, and he left just as they reached a fever pitch. And he tried to lie about it too, it took people taking pictures of him in Hawaii to force a response.

But that's not why America is upset on our behalf. It's because we can't even grow potatoes under our oppressive Liberal regime. What a bunch of fucking dolts.

I was being hyperbolic in post #2, wasn't meant to be serious - apologies if it bothered anyone itt.

It's a super fucked up course of events, and I'm glad to see that this topic hasn't taken a turn for the worst with people defending the cop for putting this guy in a coma and burning his skin off.

The defining Jordan Peterson story I've read is that he pushes an all-meat diet, and for months and months he ate only meat. Eventually he accidentally ate a vegetable, and he had nightmares so vivid and horrible that he described it as if he was in hell for what seemed like weeks and that demons were inside of his brain.

A man who had gut-wrenching hallucinogenic nightmares about brain demons because he ate a piece of brocolli is the person that disgruntled young white guys are looking to as a person who can steer the direction of their lives in a positive direction.

She's fine. A little bit overrated, and I don't like the whole "swifties" thing, but it's perfectly serviceable pop music. I like it better than Ed Sheeran.

The last time I put music on with the goal of listening to it was Omnium Gatherum, the latest King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard album. I was trying to get to sleep, but I was restless and sick of my usual playlists so I put it on a couple days after it came out.

I got through The Dripping Tap for the first time, it was pretty good but I just don't have 18 minutes for the same song to jam out the way it does. The other five tracks I heard were pretty great though, they did like a Beastie Boys-esque rap at one point.

And get accent core + r when its 2.99 usd.
Co-signing this, too. I'm not a big fan of Rayman, but I'll be fucked if he doesn't have good taste in fighting games. Guilty Gear Accent Core+R is one of the best 2D anime fighters ever, and the music fucking rips.

Any modern Arc System Works game from Guilty Gear Xrd to STRIVE, presumably. STRIVE being the most recent entry, you might wanna start there.

I'd also recommend FighterZ among that pack, the controls feel a bit simple compared to a Tekken or Mortal Kombat but it's so much fun and there's so much love and effort put into that game.
