Ive seen most of these so sign me up.

Okay, Ill give context to the high ratings. I think the story in this game slaps, you just need to look for it.

First off, the initial act of this game has some of the best storytelling of its entire generation. The stories of the doomed federation expedition are not only genuinely chilling, but like SOMA after it you get a real sense of who everybody was and exactly what happened to them. I think you can identify every body in that game which is incredible. The level of detail they put into the world is really impressive and far greater than Prime 1. And the logs themselves are great, capturing the mix of military sci-fi and horror that Aliens does so well.

After that you get a great look at the world and what Luminoth society was, and its far more thoughtful than the Chozo in Prime 1, especially in how it ties in to your equipment. For instance, the sound visor is revealed to have been a tool for blind Luminoth during the war. They do a lot more storytelling around why you are finding all this equipment and it helps to give a much more natural feeling world.

Then you have the Pirate logs and the slow build of Dark Samus and that stuff is less intricate but quite entertaining. The late game stuff is whatever, but everything up to and including Sanctuary Fortress is terrific.

So as a counter Id like to know why the low ratings!

6.5/10. A worthy followup to Star Fox 64 and much better than Adventures was.

So then tricking the guy in Stormveil castle onto the lift and watching him fall to his death is this games version of firebomb spamming the one in the Undead Burg.

Yeah though, I figured that about the Evergaols more generally but I already came back later and beat the other one fairly easily yet was still losing to him.

I like that when you beat Godrick the game just goes Oh you want to know what GRRM did? Fine. and gives you multiple lore dumps in a row.

Anyway, Crucible Knight is supposed to be much harder than every other Limgrave boss right? I was doing some cleanup but he was far too strong so I gave up and went to Liurnia instead.

Anyway, Square Enix has been an absolutely baffling company for some time now, largely held afloat by FFXIV and having some very talented studios (eg Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, Team Asano) they do their best to get in the way of. It is very clear that they have no vision for what kinds of games they want to make or how to make them.

I mean in the last four years they have released The Quiet Man, Left Alive, Balan Wonderworld, and now Babylons Fall. Somehow each year Square-Enix is managing to release one of the worst major publisher games ever made. What is going on over there? Not even getting into how they stapled GaaS onto Avengers effectively ruining a game that should have been a slam dunk, which they have done again here but with a much worse game.

Yeah, I loved this other than the weird rooftop scene with Batman and Catwomans first kiss where Batman acts terribly for no reason then they kiss for some reason. That just felt out of nowhere and should have been cut.

The pacing was fine to me, and the visuals and soundtrack were fantastic.

4/10. I liked the Celebrimbor stuff but otherwise it is a mix of generic tropes and shoehorned LotR material that disrespects the original text it is referencing.

Since theres been PhD and job chat I got my PhD two years ago and still dont know what my long term career goals are, but I got a good non-research job in academia and enjoy that a lot. In my experience people tend to try a lot of things going between academia and industry, and even within academia my last job was a postdoc that was completely different from what Im doing now. That seems nearly universal I think. Even while I was looking for a job most recently I was applying for a mix of all sorts in and out of the field.

Anyway, glad to see you again transience, my life has been largely the same for the past while so I dont have the same exciting life stuff others do to report but I did get my Irish citizenship recently which is nice as Ive lived here for most of my adult life now. Thats pretty cool.

MGS3? Feels like that's a near-universally loved game that was very hyped

You know, Im going to disagree as I dont think the hype was there and at launch the response while very positive was muted in volume. It wound up being the lowest selling numbered MGS game by a lot (I think it sold less than half of what 2 did) and did not review as well as 2. It got entirely ignored at game of the year awards and I really dont remember any post-launch hype. I remember renting it months after it came out and thinking Wait, is this game actually amazing?. It was a case where it took a few years before the reception really built. I would compare it more to something like Majoras Mask than the super-hyped games discussed in this topic.

Now, MGS2, that might qualify as that game was extremely hyped and was well received though perhaps the ending was too controversial for it to qualify.

The last couple of days for me in this game have been full of highs and lows. I went off to explore more of Limgeave and found a dungeon I havent done then beat the troll boss on the first try. Pretty great. I then lose all my runes because the momentum of getting onto Torrent sends me careening off a cliff. Not so great. Fail to do the bonus dungeon at the end of the tutorial dungeon. Also nit great. Beat the dragon despite probably being very underlevelled for it. One of the best feelings Ive ever had from a video game.

Then I did Stormveil Castle, killed the knight miniboss in the optional lower area using the lift which was hilarious, learned to hate the birds with swords for feet and flamethrowers, and just now I beat Godrick. I think this game might really be amazing.
