Well ya know today I learned Oliver and Co came out in the 80s. If you asked me 2 mins ago when this movie came out I would have said like fucking 1996 homie wheeeeew

It had a theatrical re-release at around that time. Oliver and Company was the final film to follow the Disney formula of going into the vault for seven or more years before getting a theatrical re-release.

Then Disney realized there was more money in releasing films to home video shortly after they came out in theaters. That in itself is a bit of an oddity. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King all saw VHS releases. The Black Cauldron and Oliver and Company were chilling at the sideline wondering, "Hey, when is it going to be my turn?"

Disney knew saccharine films like AristoCats and Cinderella were out of fashion, but they didn't find a formula for renewed success until The Little Mermaid. Up to that point, they just threw everything against the wall to see what, if anything, stuck.

The grungy backgrounds look like they're out of a Ralph Bakshi movie while most of the characters in the foreground are bright and colorful. Sykes and Feigen really don't feel like Disney characters. The former in particular feels like he belongs more in a sequel to Die Hard or Lethal Weapon. Again, this was that feeling out process where they're still trying to figure out what worked and what doesn't. Mad Madam Mim and Captain Hook aren't going to cut it. Why not have a loan shark as their villain? And why not increase the violence? This is the 80s. Let's have a squealing dog electrocuted on a subway track.

Half the stuff in the movie felt normal at the time. Tito sexually harasses Georgette and, at one point, plants an unauthorized kiss on her. And half of Sykes's personality is just puffing cigar smoke in Feigen's face. I would say that smoking is presented as a nasty habit, and codifies him as a bad guy, but Tito is also depicted as a smoker. Also, this one is entirely out of Disney's hands, but the World Trade Center appears in nearly every establishing shot. It's like a wall-hanging in the background of the whole movie.

Also, Billy Joel did a far better job than most celebrity guest voice actors. It's kind of odd that this would remain his only acting role other than playing himself in a guest appearance on Mad About You.

The second movie completely contradicts the first film.

I think the film itself (essentially a better version of Chuck Norris's Missing in Action) would have happened no matter what. But I think the only reason it's a sequel is because John Rambo is such a marketable name.

No idea what that has to do with a soldier potentially snapping, or a deranged student with a death wish purposely choosing the school he knows already has extra firearms in it.

Do I know the solution? No. Do I think adding armed guards to schools will act like any sort of deterrent to someone already looking to do damage? Also no.

You wanted me to admit that there was a chance, however slim, that this person could be a danger. I was saying that there's a slim chance the teacher could be a danger. That's not a strawman. We have had documented cases of teachers sexually preying upon minors.

There is no 100% safe solution. But the threat that the protector is the source of danger is far lesser than the potential for an external threat.

True. Theres A LOT more cases of soldiers having issues with undiagnosed PTSD than police officers.

Police have a culture of preying upon minorities, of murdering people and claiming self-defense even against damning video evidence. You're far, far more likely to see police abuse their power than you are to see a retired soldier / active bodyguard do the same.

The thing is, the most of us dont want to get rid of guns. We want more CONTROL over guns. Set up red flag laws. Setup stricter requirements to own a gun. Get some mental health testing. A license that needs to be renewed like a car license.

I'm in that camp. I don't believe civilians need automatics, semi-automatics, unregistered guns, excess guns, or excessive amounts of ammunition. I'm in full favor of background checks.

They didn't grab somebody off the street, hand him a gun, and tell him that he's in charge of security now. They chose someone with experience, someone who has undergone psychological evaluations, someone who is likely to be the best suited for the task at hand.

Antifar posted...
Then every day spent not separating them from American culture is a day of kicking the can down the road. "This process will take a long time" is a poor justification for not starting the process.

I'm not willing to treat the victims of shootings as sacrificial lambs to make a point that guns can never, ever be used in the cause of good. If we can protect them using guns, we need to protect them using any means at our disposal.

Go ahead and work on the underlining psychology of gun culture and gun violence. But in the meantime, let a trained professional protect the people they are trained to protect.

Have you not seen any stories of school shooters or something? They all go into it planning on dying. If someone plans on shooting this school up they aren't going to be afraid of this guy. They will just shoot him first and take his rifle

They plan to die by their own hand once it's all over; once they've killed enough people to shock the nation and write their name into infamy. And, sometimes, they earnestly plan to escape. They don't plan to be killed 40 seconds into their rampage like the Greenwood Park Mall shooter in Indiana.

This offers protection for schools and employment for veterans. I'm sorry that it means more guns, or the normalization of guns in the hands of responsible users, but it is our best response in the immediate future.

Guns are, at present, an inseparable part of American culture. Your best appeal to reason and your most cutting insult will do nothing to get people to lay down their arms.

The solution to the gun problem in America isn't years in the making -- it's decades away. Removing the underlining motivators and recognizing the warning signs are ultimately the solution for dealing with guns. But for now, the guns are already on the streets. They are already in the hands of the wrong people. Having individuals whose job it is to deal with that threat is more practical than finger waving about how stupid and violent people are.

Oh. So he gets shot first is what youre saying, then everything just becomes a normal school shooting.

Got it.

What I'm saying is no one is going to attack a school guarded by a combat veteran.

People are acting like some shooter is going to see himself as the bad guy in a stagy old western and challenge the top gun for the right to shoot up the school. If shooters were like that, they'd go after places that they knew were guarded. We'd be seeing headlines about people going into police stations and opening fire. That typically doesn't happen. They target places where they believe they can catch people off-guard and do what they will with little or no resistance.

That school is one of the safest in America.
