The fire in Moscow was almost certainly an accident, there's no evidence to suggest it was malicious from either side. It's largely cold war propaganda to suggest that Russian casualties in WW2 were something Russia did to itself.

I'm quite impressed how well Ukraine is doing.

We may actually be seeing a situation where Russia has doomed itself. It's expending a lot of military on an unimportant target, demoralized it's entire military, polarized it's civilians to a renewed hatred of the government.
If the world doesn't just suddenly forgive Russia when Putin dies and the invasion is abruptly called off, I think all of Russia might just disappear.

I'm concerned that in the event of a Russian withdrawal, all sanctions will be immediately dropped.

Make no mistake, if this fails Russia will just do it again in a few years (in Ukraine or elsewhere). Sanctions should continue until there's a complete regime change.

People understate how absolutely awful Nazi Germany was to Russia (and Ukraine). The sack of Berlin that people like to bring up was nothing in comparison. Mass executions of Russian civilians and POWs, deliberate attempts to starve or level their cities, etc.

A Russian soldier captured by the nazis was more likely to be dead by 1945 than a German soldier was when they were released from the gulags decades later.

The fact that Eastern Europe has such a huge neo Nazi presence is shocking, I still don't get it.

Russian foreign policy for the last century has been based strongly on the idea that the need a buffer zone around the entire nation. A radioactive Ukraine might be good enough if that's the goal.

Europe is one of the most war torn locations in history. When European traders started setting up permanent outposts in East Asia the locals were baffled that they built defensive walls around their buildings.

Nobody really knows what's enough for nukes, barring war with japan.

Countries who have less to lose are more likely to jump to that option though. So I'm way more concerned about nuclear war with Russia than for instance China. Russia has already been engaging in mass projection of power through espionage, assassinations and cyber warfare with western countries. Frankly it's shocking they get away with it.

All those sanctions are something Putin calculated. And his oligarchs are losing money but seem to still be on board. Dont fool yourself for a second into thinking theyre not the ones in charge in Russia.

It's dumber than that. Putin secured power by being a strongman who wanted to restore Russia to its former glory and who stoked the flames of nationalism and military conquest. And now he either buys into his own bullshit or is facing internal pressure to deliver from his supporters. We see the same situation with Xi in China. Hell, we saw the same with Trump in the US, though with much less success.

What's becoming apparent is that the Russian military is much more poorly equipped/trained than anyone had guessed. I don't believe the Ukrainian numbers, but regardless this was supposed to be a cake walk.
