the MQ will point you to do the grand company stuff to get your first mount, ur nearly there.
the UFOs are from the gold saucer amusment park I think. I'm about as new to the game as you are and I haven't figured out that shit. There are so many random NPCs scattered about that look like a inconsequential side quest but the icon is blue or whatever and they unlock pretty major features of the game apparently >_>
