While the 2nd/3rd games were great, the first game did feel like a full fledged game to me at the time (and the twist in the first one is one of my favourite of all time). When I say DR1 is a tech demo, I mean primarily in terms of gameplay mechanics/QoL stuff. The other two are a lot "smoother" to play.
