As much as I'd like to get this old dad into the Year of Dads, it just isn't looking good and I'd rather save another nom to push Sazh or some other dad over the top if needed

I rewatched The Girl in Twilight today. Past me ranked it pretty highly when I finished it back in 2018, but this was one of a handful of anime that completely faded from my memory over the last few years. I honestly don't know how that's possible now. Not only was it great, but it had a lot of zany plot elements that really should've been memorable!

I'm a huge fan of parallel universes. It's always interesting to see the same character from different perspectives. How regular Asuka compares to Serious Asuka, or Wild West Asuka, provides insight into what parts of her personality are inherent and what parts are from her surroundings. Nature vs nurture, basically. I love examining characters like that. It helped that Asuka was a great character too, no matter the version. Her voice actress Kurosawa Tomoyo (who I am obligated to mention also voices Misaki from BanG Dream) was often having full conversations with herself and she did great with all the different personalities. The Girl in Twilight had some fun parallel universes too. Those episodes felt like neat sci-fi short stories, each examining what it might be like to live in a strange new world.

A lot of other elements were good too, including the action scenes. CGI might annoy some people, but I appreciate that it allows for fights that wouldn't be possible to animate by hand on a typical budget. The rest of the characters all had their place too even if they weren't as compelling as Asuka. I liked each of their individual character arcs. The story also wound up reaching a surprisingly poignant conclusion that resonated with me more this time than it did even back when I first watched it. I'm glad I forgot all about it now, if only because if forced me to rewatch it!

I stayed up late to finish my rewatch of Snow White with the Red Hair. It was just as good as I remembered! Shirayuki is a great character, she's so cheerful and proactive that she's always a joy to watch. Even when she gets into trouble she does everything she can to solve it herself. Zen is good too, he's not just some hunky prince for the main girl to swoon over. I like that their relationship is two fully realized characters with their own dreams coming together to bolster each other. Most other anime rarely handle romance in a way that I like, they're so often fraught with harems or dumb drama that the characters could solve if they just talked to each other. Snow White with the Red Hair is such a pleasant story by comparison. As an almost thirty-two year old man, I am not ashamed to say how giddy certain moments made me feel.

Everything else about it is good too, from the interesting herbalist stuff to the setting to the side characters and the subplots that bring it all together. This is one of the few anime where I would legitimately struggle to say anything bad about it, everything was great whether it was a stand-alone story or a longer arc or just the characters hanging out with each other. I guess the worst thing about it is that there's only 24 episodes, I would've happily stayed in that world a lot longer! Only the sheer strength of the shows I rank above it keeps it out of my top ten. I'm glad I rewatched this.

I finished The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent. The premise of a woman becoming an herbalist reminded me of 'Snow White with the Red Hair', which was all the incentive I needed to watch this because Snow White was great. Sadly, Saint didn't reach the same highs. I blame it on this being an isekai and the main girl being super powerful. Having cheat code magic made Sei's accomplishments less satisfying than what Shirayuki needed to work for, plus the romance in Saint wasn't anywhere near as fleshed out. I should probably stop comparing this to Snow White, though, because that's one of the best anime ever so it isn't fair.

In any case, Saint was still a very good anime! Sei was a fun character and I enjoyed watching her learn new things about the world and her powers. There's something about herbs and potion-crafting that I always find interesting. The monster problem in the surrounding woods was a nice driving motivation for everything, and I appreciated that the political intrigue never got too dramatic. Overall, it was just a nice anime to watch.

It also really, really made me want to rewatch Snow White with the Red Hair, so I'll probably do that next.

When I first read your post I thought you meant the plot itself is tough to follow, and I'd agree with that at times. I understood a lot more while watching it a second time, but there are points were a lot of mystical stuff is happening and you just kind of have to go with the flow.

Maybe the third season will catapult it back in?
Now that I've watched the third season of Yuki Yuna is a Hero, it did not get back into my top ten. The third season was okay, but it was mostly an expansion pack to earlier content. It filled holes in the timeline with extra context and occasionally told a new story from a time period or perspective not previously covered. I enjoyed some of the new stuff (the prequel episodes in particular were really good), but most of it felt unnecessary. Not bad by any stretch, just unnecessary. It didn't elevate my opinion on the series, but it didn't hurt it either. More Yuki Yuna is a Hero is never a bad thing, but if this season never existed I wouldn't exactly miss it, if that makes sense.

In any case, that's another series I'm caught up on! Someday I'll have caught up on everything from the last few years.

Today I rewatched the first season of Yuki Yuna is a Hero, as well as rewatching both the six-episode prequel season and the six-episode sequel season. Tomorrow I'll watch season three for the first time! This anime was in my top ten at one time before being slowly pushed out by new favorites, with it now sitting at 12th. Maybe the third season will catapult it back in? I'm excited to see.

While I know most everyone else prefers Madoka, this was always the dark magical girl show for me. The first season has some problems towards the end, but even then all the characters were great with Yuki Yuna herself being one of my favorite anime characters of all time. While other grim magical girl shows try to be relentlessly bleak (Magical Girl Site and Magical Girl Raising Project, to name two examples I've seen that focused on pure shock value), Yuki Yuna is a Hero has the perfect mix of darkness and hope. It really came into its own in the prequel/sequel seasons, too. The prequel got real creative with the action scenes with the girls coordinating their powers for maximum effect. Then the sequel season not only addressed the problems I had with the first season, it went on to tell its own heartwrenching story. Yuki Yuna is one hell of a hero. I'm excited to see where the third season goes next.

I've got IRL friends telling me they know from experience that if I watch Vampire in the Garden it's going to make me angry when I get to the end, not just in a "this sucks" sense but in that it's going to actually make me upset and irratible.

They've seen that happen before so I trust them and am probably going to skip it, though now I'm awful curious about what could be so bad about the ending.
I got angry at the bad writing of it all, but I have a few guesses for what would make you angry if you don't care about spoilers anymore. You could just ask your IRL friends too, I suppose!

I finished Carole & Tuesday today. I thought it was okay. Carole and Tuesday were fun characters, and I liked most of their music. They peaked early, Loneliest Girl was by far their best song, but all of it was fine. The rest of the cast wasn't anywhere near as charming as those two, though. They would've been better off if they never met Gus at all, he was a bad manager. I also honestly think the whole show would've been better if it cut Angela entirely. She took up roughly half the runtime without ever being interesting or fun.

The setting excited me early on, it's the future on Mars and the music scene is dominated by AI singers and songwriters. It would've been nice if that actually mattered in the plot. Their main rival was a human girl. One who sang AI-written songs, granted, but still, what a waste. We're in the era of Hatsune Miku right now, you're telling me there isn't some top-of-the-line vocaloid like her in the future? Early on I was imagining C&T going up against AIs doing things in songs that humans literally can't (like the song The End of Hatusne Miku, there are parts in that where she sings literally faster than a real human could and it's great). Instead it just felt like humans vs humans, the AI component was in the background and never really mattered. Ah well. It was a nice anime but I felt it had a lot of missed opportunities like that, plus a lot of wasted time on Angela.

I rewatched Re-Kan today. Other than the ugly yellow subtitles that I couldn't change on my DVD copy, it was just as good as I remembered! Amami Hibiki can see ghosts, but it isn't a horror series like Mieruko-chan. Instead it's a feel-good comedy with plenty of heartfelt moments while dealing with the ghosts. I'm usually a big fan of these cute slice-of-life shows that have a supernatural aspect, and Re-Kan is one of my favorites. Amami is just so genuinely kind that watching her ghostly misadventures is a pleasure. Some of the side characters aren't the most memorable, but none of them drag it down except for Yamada's cop brother who creeps on high school girls. Thankfully he isn't around very much. Otherwise it's just her friends and fun ghosts, plus a perverted cat. I don't usually like pervert characters but turning that archetype into a cat only Amami can understand makes it great somehow.

One of the best parts is her best friend Inoue, though. She's absolutely terrified of ghosts, and seeing her freak out all the time always makes me laugh. One of the best parts of Re-Kan is searching scenes for Inoue cowering in the background. You'd think it would get old but this is my second time through and I still love it!

Zombie Land Saga: Revenge aka Season Two was really good! It might even slightly beat the first season, which is saying something because I liked S1 a lot when it was airing. This season helped flesh out Yugiri, who the first season mostly missed, but all the girls had their time to shine both individually and as a group. The episode focused on Tae was also the best, zombie girl is best girl. I liked the direction the plot went towards the end too, it was standard idol fare but done in such a unique way.

I was thinking about it, I like the Love Live animes to varying degrees, but even Sunshine, which is in my top ten of all time, has a few girls I'm kind of meh on. Kanan never really did anything, for example. Meanwhile, I love all seven of the main girls in ZLS. They're all great in their own ways.

I also see that there's going to be a movie at some point! With the way this season ended, I am beyond excited for that.

I finished Vampire in the Garden. I went into this really wanting to like it. Unfortunately, I did not. Early on while I was still giving it the benefit of the doubt I thought 'this is fine but it would be better if it had more episodes'. By the end, I was glad it was only five episodes. At least it didn't waste any more of my time. This is still super new so while I won't actually spoil any plot points, I'll spoiler tag more specific thoughts just in case.

The setting was incredibly simplistic, which hurt the central conflict of 'vampires and humans can't live together' because it never really showed why they couldn't. The characters were kind of crappy too, all having very simplistic motivations which never evolved and relationships that weren't explored or earned. The plot meandered through a few situations and then ended without really saying anything. Even the action scenes fell flat.

I was one episode away from finishing Zombie Land Saga but this released at 1 AM in my time zone and I jumped on it right away. I regret that choice immensely.

I rewatched the first season of Zombie Land Saga today. It was just as good as I remembered, the legendary Yamada Tae is still the best! It's an idol anime obviously, but I like how it explores different genres such as death metal and hip hop in addition to the usual idol fare. It also uses the zombie aspect really well, not just for jokes (though there's plenty of those) but also for the occasional touching moment when the girls encounter their past lives.

Tomorrow I'll watch season two for the first time, hopefully it maintains the same quality.

In Johnbobb's topic tiering how much characters from films need a therapist, two of the movies looked anime-ish (they might not be, I don't follow movies at all so I could only name Sonic and Dr. Strange from the pictures). I searched 2022 anime movies and couldn't find them, but I found another recent anime movie instead!

I watched Bubble on Netflix today. I liked it, but I felt like it should've been a lot better than it was. The production was top-notch, the music and visuals were both beautiful and there were a few sections where they both came together in a way I can only describe as epic. Like there was one bit in the middle that, once I finished watching the movie, I immediately went back and watched that part again. And then again. As a pure spectacle, this movie delivered.

As a story... not so much. It's about bubbles randomly raining on the world, but mostly in Tokyo, and screwing with gravity in strange ways. The movie doesn't even try to explain anything. No one really questions anything either, not even when a strange girl appears out of nowhere and turns to bubbles when she touches the main guy. Like the main scientist lady sees Uta's hand partially turned into bubbles and her only reaction is to give her a glove, come on. Still, it's mostly a parkour anime, so I suspect the whole bubble aspect was just an excuse to have crazy parkour scenes. Those scenes definitely delivered so I guess that's fine. I just would've preferred more substance to go along with the spectacle. The main conflict at the end was yandere bubbles and I don't know how or why or what actually happened, but I guess it was pretty?

I don't regret watching it, not at all. This is easily the best stand-alone anime movie I've ever watched (beating out absolute trash in Calamity of the Zombie Girl and mediocre trash like Starlight Promises and Expelled from Paradise... come to think of it, why haven't I watched any of the really good anime movies? I know they're out there). It just should've been better.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch that four minute stretch in the middle of the movie for a fourth time.

I loaned one of my relatives 50k many years ago to help them buy a house. We didn't sign anything to make it official but the expectation is that they'll repay me with moderate interest once they're done paying the rest of the mortgage. It was the only way they could afford to buy one (lol Canada's housing market) and in that time the house has doubled in value, so it was a good investment. I won't actually need the money until I retire someday so, hey, someone may as well use it in the meantime. The interest they'll pay me is more than my savings account where it was sitting before.

I really don't think they'll screw me, but this is still money I can technically afford to lose. Don't lend anything if not getting it back will really hurt you. From what you posted, though, this doesn't seem that huge of an amount of money to you, and if they need it right away it's probably for something important. If you trust them, no need to jump through any hoops to sign anything, imo

I'm 22 episodes into Karakuri Circus. I'm far enough along that I'll probably still finish it, but, man, this show is nonsense. The first four episodes were a neat and cohesive story about a boy being chased by evil puppets, protected by an acrobat and a guy with a disease where he dies unless he makes people laugh. That was fun, but it feels so long ago now. I don't know what the fuck is happening anymore, there have been multiple full flashback episodes about some history-spanning fight between good vs evil and I just can't care about any of it. The pacing is also way too fast and constantly jumping around. I swear, with no scene transition or explanation between them, one character went from surviving an airplane crash in Japan to being in the jungles of China months later. It's sad when a neat idea makes all the wrong decisions as if it's trying to purposefully avoid being good.

One of the evil puppets had a literal life-sized merry-go round attached to his head, and sawblades came out the sides and he used them to cut people. Why couldn't the whole anime have been about zany puppet fights like that instead of this weird reincarnation destiny romance... thing.

I watched Somali and the Forest Spirit today. I enjoyed it, it had that blend of SoL and fantasy/supernatural that I always like. The monsters hating humans so much felt a bit heavy-handed, but all of it was presented as old stories, exaggerated and corrupted by time, to justify their hatred. I didn't mind it. I think it would've been better if the ending was a bit more definitive, though.

If the golem is breaking down soon, go ahead and do it. Have Somali be sad but do something with the 'the dead turn into spirits' angle the final episode had so that she knows he's still with her. It could've been heartwrenching and instead it was merely okay.

Still, it was a fun show. Somali was cute and the golem was a neat character too. He was like the terminator in T2 trying to comprehend emotions.

I finished the third season of BanG Dream today. I'm a longtime player of the mobile game Girls Band Party, which I initially got into because the first anime season was good and and Kasumi is the best. The second season made me delay the anime for quite awhile, though. There was a bit of drama with Tae that I really didn't like. The third season had bits of drama too, but it focused on RAS so I didn't mind it. After what they did in S2, RAS deserved some drama imho

S3 did kind of turn me around on RAS, though. I went in not caring about Masking and Pareo, and outright hating Layer and Chu2 (well, the game stories have kinda redeemed them all already but going by the anime only I didn't like them). All of them were much improved by having to face adversity rather than causing it. Rokka is still the only one I really like, but all of them are fine now. Apparently there's going to be a Morfonica anime, so now I'm wondering if it'll make me like Rui, who is currently my least favorite!

As for the third season's story, the BanG Dream tournament, it was a lot of fun! I liked the Popipa episodes the most because Popipa is the best. The different strategies to climb the rankings were neat. Overall I'd rank the seasons 1 > 3 > 2, so I'm glad I finally watched this one. Most of my love for the franchise comes from the game stories at this point, but more BanG Dream anime will always be welcome!

After getting most of my mobility items, I've gotten all the real checks I can in Hollow Knight. I checked the tracker and looked up about a dozen I didn't even know about, so this was educational! Sadly, after keeping it on all day for like twelve hours, I finally had to shut my game down. I need Isma's Tear to get into Queen's Garden, that's where most of my remaining checks are. Either I'll get that and do it tomorrow or, hopefully, I'll get the last two dreamer masks and I can just beat the game right away.

As for Subnautica, I got my laser cutter, but I'm kind of gamed out today so I'll do those checks tomorrow. I still need my radiation suit in any case.

Chrono007 posted...
Thanks for organizing.

Thanks for joining! I'm glad we're still picking up the occasional new person.

I've got everything I can in Subnautica and HK. In Subnautica I most need a radiation suit and two more laser cutter fragments.

In HK, I mostly cleared Forgotten Crossroad, Greenpath, Howling Cliffs, and Resting Grounds. I only have Mantis Claw for mobility so that's about as far as I can get. Dash or double jump would really open the world up for me! I've bought everything of any value from the Dirtmouth stores and the charm shop. There doesn't seem to be anything important in my grubs or essence either but I've been collecting them anyway.

I also sent you one of your three dreamer masks, MZero! I apologize for infecting your crossroads before you even started

Room link: https://archipelago.gg/room/dPKRYDp3SBChvpXOspqiRg

Remember to refresh the room link before you play as it'll go inactive after six hours without anyone playing.

Notes: YourName1 is Sheep, the yml file was too complicated for me to fix it but the name doesn't really matter.

For Hollow Knight players, connecting a new game to the server is a bit finicky. When you click an area to type something in, don't move the mouse or else it'll stop typing. The things you need to type in are 45.83.104.96 in the first box, 63873 in the second, and then your Hollow Knight player name.

You'll need to clear the save and restart a new one whenever you quit and relaunch the game. Based on everything I know, you'll still receive every single Archipelago item (the shiny ones) and picking them up again won't do anything. Everything else in the world will be a default world, including bosses, levers, benches, etc. Stag Stations are an item so you can use those to rapidly re-explore old areas. Archipelago also includes a benchwarp mod, so you can also 'unlock all' in that if you want and try to only use benches you'd accessed previously.

@HBJDubs @Chrono007 you two aren't on the discord so I figured I'd ping you. People should read anything you post here, so don't feel like you need to join our discord. If you do want to, though, this is the link I set to never expire. Let me know if you try and it doesn't work.

I caught up on all the airing shows today. Executioner really impressed me today! Time loops are my jam, and I like the weird time-transcending relationship Menou and Akari have now

It has climbed to my second favorite of the season, behind Kongming

I actually do have one complaint about OddTaxi now that I've read a bit about it. Apparently there's some sort of companion audio drama that's meant to be listened to alongside the episodes, which would've been nice to know before I watched it. It sounds like the info in there would've solved the only part of the plot that I found confusing. I felt like I was missing something in what the girl was saying in the ending, it would've hit a lot harder if I knew about the pen

I watched Odd Taxi today. I might make a more detailed post later because it's late. I also feel like I still need to sort out the plot in my head. Man, did that story ever go places. I really enjoyed it though.

Today I watched the other anime on Funimation that'd caught my eye, Taisho Otome Fairy Tale. Sadly, I really didn't like it. When I read the premise there were two ways I could see it going and both of them sounded neat. It's about a girl who was sold off to repay her family's debts, and now she needs to look after and eventually marry an exiled/depressed rich boy. On the one hand it could've been a good romantic drama, one where two broken characters overcome their circumstances and form a satisfying bond. On the other hand, it also could've been nothing more than a cute anime where a manic pixie dream girl livens up a depressed guy's life in increasingly zany ways. I was ready for either! TOFT just wound up falling into the worst of both worlds.

Yuzu was the cute half. The problem was that the dark half was still there, it just wasn't explored at all because she wasn't allowed to not be cute. Sold off to pay debts and forced to marry a depressed edgelord? That's fine! Before leaving, she told her parents to pretend she's dead because she'll never see them again. Except... why not? It's the 1920s, take a train. It's not like the main guy wouldn't let her, she just doesn't want to for some reason because apparently she met this dude and now she's good, she doesn't need anything else. She was such a perfect and dutiful girl who existed only to support her man, and frankly the situation didn't warrant it. I wanted her to be a little bitter at the very least. I wanted these two to fall in love with each other because they connected and formed an actual bond, not because one half waltzed in determined to fall in love no matter what. Every cute moment between the main two felt tainted because Yuzu was all fidgety and blushy right from the get-go when he was still a grumbly loser. I don't know why he felt like he needed to try so hard, she clearly didn't need it.

Then there was the dramatic half, best personified by one of the worst characters ever, Ryo. Robbery, parental abuse, prostitution, causing drama for the sake of drama, this girl had every dark idea possible swirling around her. And none of them were explored! She was just there to cause a bit of chaos and then be forgiven in an instant because Yuzu is a saint. Ugh. You'd think regularly getting the shit beaten out of her by her drunken father would be a problem someone wants to solve, but, nope! Ryo doesn't even have any bruises. There was other pointless dark stuff towards the end but I don't want to whine about this show too much longer.

The best part of TOFT was the voice actress of Arisa from BanG Dream playing an old-timey idol. That was the only unequivocally good part.

Thanks to WhiteLens pointing out how Funimation works, I was able to watch Mieruko-chan today!

Along with 'horror' and 'supernatural', MAL lists 'comedy' as one of its genres. I disagree. If there is a joke, it's the same joke over and over. Miko notices a ghost but she can't react or else the ghost will attack her, so she needs to remain calm on the outside while freaking out internally. I guess some might call that funny? There are a few other funny moments, mostly related to her friends, big-eater Hana and exorcist-in-training Yulia. One bit early on involved a groping ghost only Miko could see, and in retrospect that bit of lightheartedness feels very out of place. I wouldn't call this a comedy anime, not at all. It's a horror anime, and I thought it did the horror surprisingly well. A lot of the ghosts were genuinely creepy, both in appearance and in how they acted. What frightened me more than anything, though, was poor Miko's situation.

The poor girl can see ghosts. It also seems like most ghosts can almost sense that she can see them, but they aren't quite sure. So they come closer. They hover near her face, exhaling clouds of what looks like toxic fumes as they probe for reactions. And Miko cannot react. If she so much as waves at a ghost that disguised itself as a human, it will go berserk and attack her. I found quite a few of the scenes genuinely tense. Imagine you're on a crowded train, then a ghost starts walking down the car swinging an axe into people's faces. No one else reacts, of course, but they can't see it. You can see it. And, since you can, will the axe swing harmlessly through your head too? Will it hurt you? You can't get out of the way, because then the ghost will know you see it. So you need to sit there as the ghost moves closer... closer... until you're next. You have no idea what will happen as that phantasmal axe chops down onto your face. And you just need to sit there.

It definitely creeped me out! Miko is stuck in a never-ending real-life horror movie, but she can't flinch at any of the jump scares. She has no actual idea how any of this works. No one can help her. Nothing she tries to ward off the spirits seems to work. There's more than just ghosts out there, too, and not all of the supernatural beings are after her. Some are after her friends.

I went into this hoping to find another Re-kan (and my DVD of that finally arrived, so I'll probably rewatch it soon too). Re-kan was a comedy, one where the ghosts were all friendly and one girl's terror towards them was always treated as a joke. Mieruko-chan isn't a comedy at all, but it does share one nice aspect with Re-kan. Every so often, Re-kan dropped the comedy and had a genuinely touching moment. Mieruko-chan also dropped the horror on a few occasions to have a touching moment with the rare ghosts who weren't insane or evil. I enjoyed those moments a lot too.

I'm not sure many other people would like this, Miko being scared of ghosts happens often enough that one might call it repetitive. I just fell in love with the concept and really enjoyed it the whole way through.

Huh, you know I never actually tried watching anything on the Funimation website, I just assumed it would be like most other streaming services. In particular I wanted to watch Mieruko-chan because I loved Re-kan. This sounds like a similar thing, only the main girl who can see ghosts is scared of them. It looks like it works, too! Thanks for pointing this out.
