I didn't realize there was a six degree of separation rule at play here. So it's alright to post goat porn if it's hosted on someone's Twitter but I can't link directly to goat porn? Good to know.

I've been stung by this nonsense before.

I was going to say it's a lot easier for people to say something does or doesn't follow the guidance of the law than it is to sit and reason out if somebody is right or wrong.

Having typed that out, it really isn't "a lot easier", especially considering one requires specialist training in order to understand the law.

I went to boarding school. The bullying got progressively less severe as I went through the ranks.

My first year (age 11), they would still do "summonings", where you'd get summoned to a seniors room and be faced by 6 of them with hockey sticks and they'd beat you until you sobbed.

Prior to that they had just recently ruled out "the gauntlet", where you'd have to run over pintacs barefoot down a narror corridor while seniors wailed on you from either side.

From everything I've heard, this trend continued over the years. The bullies in the 60s and 70s did things I shan't even type out here.

Much of this was actually encouraged by teachers because it "built character".

By the time I got to my final year, they had figured out that bullying had potential mental side effects and you couldn't so much as look sternly at a junior without a teacher losing their marbles at you. This resulted in what we saw as a very spoiled bratty generation of juniors, but overall I think it was a very good thing. Maybe we were just jealous because when we were their age we lived in mortal fear of senior students.

were there f4gs still? (look it up mods, it's a uk term about bullying in boarding school)

I'm in Pennsylvania :p

There's a lot of nice forest hikes/camping here. You could probably hike the Susquehannock Trail System for years and still not hit all the trails. Stuff all though the Monongahela National Forest, like the Dolly Sods. Even stuff like the Laurel Highlands Trail through Ohippyle is pretty nice. The only thing you don't get is some of those "Holy fuck" views you'll get out of doing something like the CDT.

Which reminds me. It may "add" a day or two, but don't dare skip the Rocky Mountain National Park loop. I don't know why some CDT thru hikers are so eager to bag their triple crown that they would skip a national park. Almost as if they forget why they started hiking.

there is a lot of great hiking in the USA, i'm envious. thanks for the tip, i've added it to my notes

Do you have a mapped out route you plan on taking, so you know where to expect food/water/possibly places to rest while you hike?!?

If so, what is your estimated hiking time?

kind of, i'm using ley's maps (and guthooks for GPS) but haven't figured out the full route yet; food is easy, water is okay, i don't plan on zero days so i will just tent accordingly wherever i like

i estimate just a little over 4 months, somewhere near 130 days

Sounds intense. Where did you sleep. What did you eat. How do I prepare

There are wooden shelters every ten miles or so. I slept in my tent however, wherever I wanted. I was a bit more unorthodox and also slept in bathrooms, in a baseball dug out, in shopping malls, abandoned buildings ... But very few people did that.

I ate poptarts and peanut butter for breakfast. Cliff bars and protipein bars and candy in the day. Tortillas and cheese. At night I had knorrr pasta sides and tuna fish. Same food every day pretty much. You cross roads every few days so can hitch a ride into towns.

I looked at gear lists on r/appalachiantrail and then read the awol guide book and then just did it, no regrets

How in shape do you have to be to do something like this, or even a small portion? I've always wanted to try.

I didn't train for it, I think the best preparation is actually hiking, so the first 30 days got me in shape. That said I lost 45lb total.

Lots of big guys and girls out there hiking. Mental strength is more important Imo. Go for it, it's the best thing I have ever done!
