To put this into perspective: I'm not meant to be be around kids at my job (I haven't had a background check and it costs money) but as part of it, I have to be in rooms with kids at times. Even if its just walking dogs. That's good. You can use that. Basically, one of the biggest problems with volunteering for anything, but mainly hospitals or animal shelters is people get burned out way, way too quick. The fact you have experience with animals would hold well for you so I suggest doing some research on the place you're looking to volunteer at, dress up nice (no need for a full on suit but like... jeans and a polo or something) and then just make sure you explain well what you did at the animal sanctuary.
