Honestly tho, calling a grill a barbecue isn't really my primary concern itt.

The Brits that your language comes from? The ones that share most of your language with you? Right.

Nope.
BBQ is often colloquially used to refer to any cookout or grilling but those people are wrong.

Well that's factually not the case.

This is past tense. Made. Not makes or is making. Made is a past tense verb. You don't need had.

As for writing the past in present tense or the present in past tense, both are acceptable, as long as you are consistent.

Thank you. I'm going to go back and see where I can cut the fat so to speak. I detest repetitive language in writing and it bugs me everytime I go back and proofread.

No problem. I normally do 4 or 5 drafts before sending work out. I don't think anybody gets everything perfect first time.

And that's where I'm running into the "he had" problem, because it's only to stay consistent with tenses. These events are not happening, they happened.

Am example of a sentence: "His mouth had felt suddenly dry, tongue working rhythmically in an attempt to mine some forgotten tributary".

Not much context, I know, but maybe I'll go back through the chapter and try to see if there's a way to cut out some "hads" in favor of other words.

I'd drop the had out of that one regardless. It adds nothing to the sentence.

Are you shifting tenses throughout the work or something? If not, then there's no need to indicate anything, just make sure to stay in the past tense all the way through.

Most books are written in the past tense. Just pick one up and read a few passages to get the feel of it before going back to writing.

I read everyday lol. And yes, the book has two different time periods separated by thousands of years.

But are you switching tenses when you change timelines? Books can have several time periods and still be written completely in the past tense.

Likewise, it's possible to write a book with multiple time periods entirely in the present tense.

You could switch tenses when you switch time periods, but the main thing is to be consistent (e.g. past tense in the past, present tense in the future...or even vice versa).

I did switch tenses because the present story is happening, while these events I'm writing about now happened about 3,000 years prior.

Sure, but that's an artistic choice. A valid one, but not a necessary one.
