30. Beat a game with a female lead

Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaire's Conspiracy

Well, technically I'm not done playing it since there are still the future daily puzzles to solve, but I've finished the main story/minigames, the postgame bonus puzzle rooms, and all the dailies released so far, so that ought to count as beaten for this.

14/50 (I'm getting pretty behind on this, orz)

how was this btw

OKAY! I went around with a guide and grabbed all the Badges and the 2 items I had missed in my normal play. Now all that's left is the Library and Irisu, and a few badges you have to get in there and afterward.

and the Halloween DLC.

I'm sure I missed a ton of random stat ups and a LOT of easter eggs, but oh well

Are you playing with the PS3 patch? That does add in CGs among other things, though I forget if there's one for that particular scene or not.

Rabi-Ribi is the highest rated metroidvania on Steam and one of the highest rated games on steam by Wilson score (lower bound of the 95% confidence interval of the estimator or "that metric steamdb uses"). The end of the main game of Rabi-Ribi isn't really the end of the game though. There's a lot of "post game" story content. And there is a post-post-game. There's a strong argument that getting all town members is the "real" end of the game and the "end" of the main game is there mainly to put a reasonable cap on the game length for speedrunning. 10 town members is the "No Major Glitches" category and takes about 40-50 minutes on normal. All town members is about twice that. (Any% glitches Alius 1 and doesn't work on speedrun mode IIRC, takes about 10-15 minutes)

I heard Libra of the Vampire Princess is pretty eh. Translation is undoubtedly pretty jank. And none of that fake "Persona 5's translation is super jank" stuff. From what I've seen it's not IMHHW bad, but definitely could use a couple more editing passes at the current level of translation.

wow had no idea it was so critically acclaimed! I guess I'll go back to the game, though I"m not really sure where to go from here. I went guideless so far, but I may need help now. I do wanna check out a speedrun too, that seems interesting! i figured out the hidden technique backwards walljump pretty late in the game, but I assume it can lead to some neat sequence breaking early

Gone are the days when I play through an entire episode of Umineko in a single night.

I'm going to call it here at the end of chapter 3 of Higurashi. It's entertaining, but I can't help but feel like the medium (or budget, I guess) is holding it back a little. For example, Keiichi is alone in the dump reading a tabloid about the creepy murder/dismemberment that happened a few years ago. Just as he's remarking how normal villagers could do something so horrific with tools and an axe, Rena shows up and surprises him with an axe in her hand.

He's understandably freaked out for a second, but because there's no CG or alternate sprite or real audio cue or anything, the impact is notably lessened for the reader. All we get is a silly sound effect. I'm going to hope there's some new sprites for when shit gets real later, and maybe they just wanted to keep that a secret for now?

Weird thing about Higurashi is Hinamizawa apparently only has 30 school age kids. They don't say the actual population of the town, but the background pictures make it look WAY bigger than Kitadaito. But we have twice as many kids!

Part of that is probably just Okinawan families are big, I guess.

These aren't in order, but I'm starting the list off at 10/50 completion

7. Beat a game in a series you've already played some of: Danganronpa 2
12. Beat a game made by a developer you've never tried: Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
14. Beat a JRPG: Trails in the Sky SC
24. Beat a game with romance as a central theme: Kindred Spirits on the Roof
26. Beat a game with revenge as a central theme: Tales of Berseria
31. Beat a game with a child lead: Danganronpa (Can I get a ruling on this? They're teens? Can move to non-white I guess)
34. Beat a game with an animal lead: Rabi Ribi
50. Beat three games in a series (First game): FE Fates Birthright
51. (Second game): FE Fates Conquest
52. (Third game): FE Fates Revelation

Just finished the main game today with 20/24 townspeople collected. I had a good time with it! By the end of the game I had the hang of maneuvering and dodging attacks, and was doing much better on the bosses, even as they got more difficult. I got my first MAX RANK boss clear toward the end.

I hadn't installed the free Halloween DLC, so maybe I'll go back and play that. There's also post-game content that opened up, plus NewGame+ and Boss Rushes. Lots of content here!

This is a good game for me to play while I let a Podcast or something play, because the story is almost non-existent and it's all about exploring these different areas and seeing if you can find new secrets with whatever powers you've found since the last time you were here. And an INCREDIBLE amount of the game is totally optional. I never even found air-dashing.

So yeah, I also have a few other games installed and I'm not sure what order I'll play them in. I started up Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Onikakushi earlier today, and lemme tell you when you actually live in a small town in Japan this game is a TRIP AND A HALF. Keiichi's description of Hinamizawa could very easily fit my town too (except it's not 1983, so even small towns have vending machines now - see Your Name!) The inciting incident for finally getting this VN was actually a conversation last week with another teacher who it turns out is a massive nerd. I'll translate from Japanese:

Me "We can't find the 20th coin from the treasure hunt game. We only have 19."
Fuku-sensei "Oh. Maybe it was spirited away?" (onikakushi)
Me "Ah! Yeah, it was probably Oyashiro-sama."
Fuku-sensei "Please be careful of Hinamizawa Syndrome."

We both laughed so hard. It's nice to find a fellow nerd in a small town!

I have Trails in the Sky 3rd installed, but I'm not sure I'm feeling a big JRPG so soon after Berseria. I think I'll hold off on it awhile longer. Stardew Valley, Hyperdimension Neptunia ReBirth 1, Final Fantasy XXX-2, and Crypt of the Necrodancer are also installed. Oh and I've been downloading Final Fantasy X/X-2 for literally 5 days now. My internet is so hilariously slow.

And I suppose if this is a Rose Games topic I should mention I just played through Fire Emblem Fates. Birthright -> Conquest - Revelation. I have a lot of thoughts about how ambitious this game's scope was, and how some of the fundamental design decisions actually sincerely hurt the game, but I won't get into it if nobody's interested. My big takeaway here is Soleil is the greatest Fire Emblem character ever.

Oh?

so I'm contracted through a municipal school district and work at a school. Nobody here knows I'm trans. They just think I'm a weird foreigner that wears girly clothes sometimes and likes girly things.

It's under the umbrella of the JET Program, though, and I'm out to them, and they've been fantastic about it. It's just they respect my privacy and don't want to cause me any trouble with potentially conservative school districts. I figure if I stay here for 5 years, it'll become more and more obvious and yet it won't be a big deal. People here love me because I'm a good teacher and I'm friendly and participate in the community. If I had moved here like HI I'M THE NEW FOREIGNER ALSO I'M A SOCIAL STIGMA it might've gone a lot different, y'know?

basically I'm playing a long con

Thanks for answering!

I asked because I have a friend, transguy, who finds it hard to find resources for transitioning here in Indonesia (not surprising). He often notes that ftm is more invisible than mtf (e.g. in public consciousness, online resources, and media representation), which is a double edged sword. He's finishing college and is looking into what things he can do after graduation (that preferably doesn't have him registering as his birth sex) to save money for the transition. Wish him luck.

absolutely! Yeah my college roommate ended up marrying a trans dude and he was the first one I met in person, and one of the first people I came out to. It's definitely its own unique set of struggles.

What are some different obstacles faced by ftm as opposed to mtf transgender people?

oh interesting question. In the US our entire society has a certain level of internalized misogyny (not that this is unique to us), so that's obviously something. You're essentially volunteering to make yourself a second class citizen in some ways. One very specific example? women's shave gel costs more than men's shaving cream. There's a million things like that.

but a much more problematic part of that comes with clothes. If a woman wears "man's clothes" nobody really bats an eye? If it's VERY masculine, she might be assumed to be a lesbian. But a man wearing women's clothes is still a huge stigma. So if you're a mtf trans person and don't "pass" then you run into that wall. And by the way, especially early in transition, even IF you don't run into someone that gives you shit about it, it's so hard to ignore the voices in your head. Just walking into the women's section at Kohl's or whatever I almost had a panic attack. Which is preposterous, right? Men shop their for ladies too (not to mention themselves!) But it's not just me, it's a very common thread in trans communities "how do I get the courage to go shopping for the first time?"

and that's not even mentioning bathrooms. I've never used a women's bathroom in public. It's just too scary in the south of the US, then I came here. thank god for gender inclusive restrooms.

(there's a lot more to sense8 than just Nomi's character, but it's definitely one of the things I love)

Is there any media, iyo, that handles transgender characters well?

Is having a transphobic protagonist or person allied with the protagonist bad even when it is clearly shown to be it meaning that character isn't perfectly a good person and/or they learn and therefore overcome that flaw of their previous ignorance/whatever?

sense8! I just started season 2 tonight. A trans woman, PLAYED BY A TRANS ACTRESS, WRITTEN BY TRANS WRITERS god it's unbelievably good (also there are some absolutely heartbreaking scenes that caused my actual physical pain to watch)

as for the second question, sigh. It's not like... the worst? It's just tired and overdone. I'm so flawed because I ____ (insert any number of things that's prevalent in society). If your point is to tell the story of a cis person that heroically overcomes their transphobia, I just have to ask why? Did we need that? Haven't a million variations of that story been enough? It'd be the same with some white person heroically overcoming their racism, or some gamergater heroically coming to understand women are people.

well since it was already brought up and you don't seem too bothered, is it ever correct to refer to a trans person by their old name and/or gender? Like if I wanted to talk about something from back in the day, should I still call you AKR?

It definitely depends person to person. When I refer to myself in childhood, I still say Rose / she, unless I'm very specifically talking about an issue that arose because I was AMAB. When my friends or family do the same, I do appreciate it each and every time. That said, the worst I get is a pang of discomfort when it happens - I know other people had much, much worse experiences in their youth and are understandably more traumatized about deadnames.

tl;dr yes, I'd appreciate that

So what were the reasons for the change

rather than making a totally warranted but also totally expected dumb joke here, I'll just take your question at face value. The transition process is to make my physical body more accurately reflect my actual self :)

do you find it weird that, much like Heroic Mario, I want to continue referring to you as akj? it's not a gender thing, just an internet name thing.

it's a LITTLE annoying but not the end of the world. How often do you even have to refer to me, y'know?

As much as I think I sometimes know about Japan based on a lifetime of osmosis from their media, it occurs to me that there are so many aspects of Japanese society that I have no idea about, and this is one of them. Like, I have absolutely no idea what a pride event in Japan even looks like. I think it's partly that LGBT people in Japan just doesn't seem to be a topic that's breached very often, like I just think about "LGBT people in Japan" and my mind comes up blank, it's not something I've seen or heard about. But probably more is that I have this perception in my head that Japan isn't super active about social change and doesn't have a lot of social or political unrest, so it's hard for me to imagine what a gathering to show support for LGBT looks like in Japan. It's just kind of funny that way - for whatever reason, a pride event in Japan is just difficult to imagine in a way that it's not in other countries, even though it's not that I think that Japan is particularly anti-LGBT or anything like that at all.

Over 5000 of us marched through Harajuku, Shinjuku, and Shibuya last week. Many, many more were there for the events.

For ages now Japan has had caricatures of queer people on TV (are you familiar with "okama" or the more recent but still problematic "onee"?) but it's starting to change with this younger generation, just like everywhere else. I gave a thousand high fives and had so many people yelling "HAPPY PRIDE!" to me from the sidewalk. It was truly wonderful.
