I think it was sprite Kefka looking pretty darn great more than anything else. Perhaps it was the contrast between sprite and CG, too, but Wesker is fairly weak to begin with. The dude couldn't even get 60% on Luca friggin' Blight.

Nah, it's not anywhere near that level. Don't get me wrong. Wesker looks completely out of place there and doesn't fit at all, but at least he doesn't look utterly unrecognizable as a person.

All right, finished up the main game for KH2! I forgot how well designed and orchestrated the final sequence against Xemnas is. Such great atmosphere and presentation throughout the whole thing. I get people thinking KH2 took a step back in terms of finesse, difficulty, and the technical aspects of the battle systems, but it took a huge step up in terms of flash, flair, and atmosphere. That's why I'll always prefer it over KH1. Well, that and Organization XIII, Roxas, and Namine.

Now to get to work on the new optional content!

Cleveland's biggest problem is that they are so much worse at defense this year compared to last year. They can't flip a switch because there's no switch at all. None of the new guys they brought in play defense. At this point, they're basically just trying to outscore everybody. That works in the East, but not against the Warriors.

Made it up to the final save point in KH2. Figure I'll beat the game and then go back and finish all the optional boss fights. Finally got to experience the new Roxas boss fight, accompanied by The Other Promise. It was awesome. He beat me a couple times, but then I initiated Duel mode, stole his keyblade, and owned the crap out of him. All the bonus cutscenes afterward were so good, too. Roxas is just the best. Definitely my favorite original KH character.

I think I'm far enough removed from the Internet at this point to really care about toxic fanbases. that used to drive some decisions for me but lately I'm just blind to it all. feels good.

Eh, I've always been good at compartmentalizing stuff like that and staying away from the toxic elements. I belong to a few of those toxic fanbases (Sonic probably being the worst of them), but I still manage to keep myself separate from the unseemly stuff.

I forgot how quickly the game dives off the deep end as soon as Kira takes the stand. In a world where magic is the norm, even Labyrinthians find the idea of a "robe of invisibility" utterly absurd.

We watched Star Trek Into Darkness today, but apparently I'm not supposed to say that I really liked it because that's a controversial opinion amongst Trekkies. I am not a Trekkie though, so whatever. Movie had a bunch of excellent setpieces and some good cast chemistry moments. You give me a bunch of "determined in the face of impossible odds" moments and I'll probably be happy. You give me a bunch of Alice Eve and I'll also probably be happy.

Chapter 8 finished, which means we're only halfway through L-4! They split the trial up over two chapters here because you're technically controlling Layton for the last chapter, I guess! We also have a playable Layton segment in the middle of the trial as they climb up and investigate the Storyteller's Tower, which is a really cool location. They find a photo of Espella as a child with a girl who is quite clearly Darklaw, but nobody bothers pointing it out for some reason. At the top of the tower, we discover that the Storyteller is unsurprisingly still alive, and we get a cool cutscene followed by a puzzle of Layton fighting a bunch of suits of armor brought to life by the Storyteller writing them into existence, or so it seems. The image of chibi Layton slicing through those armored suits in the puzzle is so great.

Afterward, we find out that the Storyteller has lost control of his own Story and is completely unaware that Espella is the one on trial. After all, it was supposed to be Kira, whom Phoenix and Maya found up in the belfry after solving the puzzle there. Layton tells him he intends to go back and take his place in the courtroom, but not as a defender, since that spot is already filled. Since it will be his job to expose the truth, there's only one place he can stand. Then he invites the Storyteller to come watch it all unfold as the chapter ends.

Finished Kanji's dungeon in P4G, thankfully. That place is so annoying, but much easier to handle with NG+ benefits on your side. Kanji punching his Shadow in the face right before he accepts it is so good.

Finished up Olympus Coliseum and Space Paranoids in KH2 as well. The callback to a bunch of Auron's lines in FFX is a really cool touch, and then the Hades fight with Hercules is so good. Also, James Woods brings it as usual, but you know who doesn't bring it? Mena Suvari, Aerith's VA for this game. I had forgotten just how dreadful she is here. This is Jeff Zero's first experience with KH2, so he's been marveling every time she speaks, but not in a good way. The boss fight at the end of Space Paranoids, followed by Tron hugging everyone before he leaves, is really good, too. I still need to defeat those Absent Silhouette things of Marluxia and Vexen before I head to TWTNW, so I guess that'll be for tomorrow.

You use pictures from an actual game in the series that's being represented in the match, yes. Again, Smash Bros. probably wins anyway, but the picture is very unbalanced and gives Smash an unfair advantage that it didn't even need. The fact that Sonic's side looks good is irrelevant. It doesn't compare with sprites from three of the most popular Nintendo games around, especially considering the sprites aren't from Smash Bros. It's as bad as giving Solid Snake MGS3 pics in 2004, because it's not Solid Snake (although that arguably hurt him instead of potentially helping him). It is not fair to let Smash Bros. draw from non-Smash sources for pics. Heck, Rikku getting literal fan art for a match pic in 2013 wasn't fair either even though it was hilarious that Bacon never realized it was fan art. Both sides have to be held to the same standards, plain and simple.

Resident Evil got it way worse against Street Fighter though because it got literal Resident Evil Gaiden pics and almost lost because of that, but at least it's...sorta a game from the series. Leon Kennedy is always out of luck in sprite rounds because he's got nothing that looks good pre-RE4.

there was a bad storm a couple weeks ago that knocked it out and we were never able to get it to come back up, no matter what we did

so we're just switching to a brand new service provider because this isn't the first time I've had problems with it

Anyway, I got through the Vigilantes testimonies, and they weren't as bad as I remembered! They were overly long since they're nine statements apiece, but they're thankfully not convoluted or hard to navigate. It's chaotic, but it never gets out of control at the same time. I enjoyed the moment where all nine of them object at the same time. Also, Maya continues to be great by getting Number Nine's name without missing a beat. She also confirms Phoenix/Iris by outright saying she and Phoenix are not a couple! Huzzah!

L-4 is unique in that there are out-of-trial sequences in the middle of the trial, the first of which here is solving the puzzle in the bell tower with the two pendants. The game made it a little too obvious that Espella had the other pendant while trying to sell you that it's a dramatic moment where you need to come up with something to save the day. Like, she holds up her arm with the pendant on it and the camera stays on it for a good five seconds, so it's not even a matter of paying close attention.

Phoenix shows up before the first trial day in the suit without the attorney's badge, and Apollo comments that he doesn't look like a hobo anymore (and they do a quick 3-D-ification of Hobonix just because they can).

He also shows up on investigation day 2, and he talks about 5-2's similarity to 2-2, including an indirect reference to Franziska. That was the moment I knew the series was going to be okay again.

Finished up the Port Royal quest, and the end of it where Jack Sparrow says he plans to come back for Sora's keyblade one day made me realize that's what I want KH3 to be.
