I think my favorite scene with Nier is the one with him when he fights the Shadowlord. His refusal to ever see things from the Shadowlord's perspective even when it is so close to his own shows the kind of guy he is. I do put Neir in the same places as Joel from the last of us, in that they are good characters but not likable people and in some places you don't want them to succeed.

Yeah Nier was basically Joel's predecessor. And the predecessor to a lot of recent video games with dads as the main character, actually.

I liked the sidequests in Automata a lot. The writing in them is fantastic and they expand the world and its themes by quite a bit. I consider them almost as important as the main story itself.

In terms of pure game design, they're mostly fetch quest-y but that also describes 99% of sidequests in existence so it didn't bug me.


DadNier is a very good character. He has one sympathetic driving goal that he jumps down a rabbit hole of near-insanity to achieve, sacrificing everything and everyone along the way to try and achieve it. And unlike someone like Kratos, he does so while feeling like a real human being instead of a parody. I think if you're looking for him to be a strictly likable character, you're not going to find what you want, but as a compelling character who helps make the story work, he ticks all the right boxes.

Automata is an experience that continuously gets more engrossing the more you learn about the world and what's going on. It starts out good and every part makes the previous parts retroactively better. And it's not so much the ending as the last 1/3 of the game kicks it into high gear.

Ugh. Nidhogg EX. I tried so hard to clear that when it was current but I just got crap group after crap group. Really fun fight but man!

As far as DPS goes - I never knew how bad other people were until I used a *method censored by Square Enix*. I'm at the top of the charts 99% of the time, even during the 24-man instances. And I'm not even that great!

Also, one thing that will make playing with your friends easier is Echo. Content that isn't current (So most of it) gives you bonuses for the next attempt if you get far and die. Goes up to a 25% increase in all stats. It helps all players experience the old stuff.

It depends. There are three difficulty tiers in FF14 - normal, extreme, and savage. Normal is casual. Extreme is much harder but you can still eke out wins with bad allies. For Savage you need 8 good players (a.k.a. full party) or you lose. Period. DPS checks are very harsh in Savage content. Note that there's a ton of Extreme content and it's very fun, so not being able to do Savage isn't a huge deal.

As for balance - every class is viable. However the new expansion threw off balance somewhat. Monk is usable but clearly outclassed. Samurai is busted and Machinist is garbage. Scholar is harsher on MP costs than it should be and White Mage got weird. These issues will be ironed out over balance patches though

Watched up to Episode 6. So far it feels...hmm. I don't know. The characters are certainly much less memorable after Berseria. I'm not sold on Mikleo's voice acting either. The overall conflict seems kind of generic. The animation, however, is extremely good and is my main drawing point at the moment. Those action scenes!

People use parsers whenever they want they can't just be open about it in public, meaning that premades are free to talk about whatever they feel like as always while strangers don't have to worry about people mouthing off about DPS in public instances

I was getting a Cloud-vibe from Makoto anyway with the look of his Persona, but now this bit about only caring to fight because he was asked is more substantially making that point. We'll see if that continues.

Fun fact: Makoto in the original game is very much a blank slatesilent protagonist character. Didn't even have an official name! The writers of the movie based his characterization on what the fanbase collectively came to agree on what his personality was probably like based on the events of the game.

There's a guy (IIRC he's a friend of Comey's, I think he's a reporter) who has a pattern of tweeting out hints before some of the most major revelations/stories.

Although, the idea of the place where I live honoring / not honoring someone is not an idea I'm very familiar with. The place where I live doesn't really do things like that. It's not really a community, though. Just a place with other places in it. We're not a close-knit town. A certain recent ex-vice president came from our county and we still don't really care. It's a lot more...impersonal, I would say.
