Hey Thrillwell!

Let's see, I can't remember my last update, so here's a brief overview

January- Got approved for adoption
February- Got my first match, 2 children, a boy and a girl. Didn't get them
March- No matches
April- Got another match, three little girls. As of right now, haven't heard back so probably didn't get them
May- This Saturday, we are going to a statewide adoption event where we get to meet the children that have yet to be adopted and we can choose one there if we like them. Otherwise, I have to wait until mid-May to see if I get any matches this month to apply for.

That's pretty much it. It's just been a waiting game at this point and the hope that one day one of our matches will be approved for adoption. And we continue to try to conceive the natural way in case that works out for us too.

Keep in mind that prior moderations are taken into account when reviewing a user's moderations. A user with several past recent moderations will be penalized more harshly than a user with a clean record. This also includes other accounts by the same user. If you see more lower-karma users get harsher punishments, they could either have a prior history of moderations, or could be the alt of a user with a prior history of moderations.

lol

Yeah, undergraduates make me chuckle. As a phd student working full time in an undergraduate institution, I can't help but be amused at what freshman consider stressful work, like trying to complete a 500-word essay.

But everyone goes through those periods of inexperience. Sure, we can laugh at it now, but we went through it ourselves once. And not everyone experienced the same circumstances as us.

That's quite exaggerated, but there is some truth to many of those panels.

I know of two marriages that pretty much went that trajectory. Especially the social media part. The guys were wrecked on social media, even though the woman was the unfaithful one in one of those cases. How she can cheat, and still get all the facebook support, the kids, and that alimony check is beyond me.

But to say that this is basically what the common marriage is like is ridiculous.

All in all, completely different from how you do it. Yours seems more like a masters degree++ with a bigger thesis. :O

Basically, yes, as so far, the process feels identical to my Master's thesis I did a while back, just on steroids. My understanding of the more technical fields is that publications are expected throughout the phd program since usually what is submitted are progress reports and short descriptions of ongoing work. In my field, unfortunately, they only accept finished works with significant results for publication, so it is much more time-consuming to get just one published article.

The dissertation stage is meant to train you to complete a full research study from beginning to end, while learning to deal with the various complications involved with using people as test subjects and validating self-report measures. It isn't common for a phd student in my field to have more than 1 or 2 publications, and most have 0.

Where are you outside the US, anyways?

The plan was to get them both out before seriously considering my proposal.

I was working on three papers that I submitted to journals before starting my proposal. All three were rejected. I got so frustrated I just put them on the backburner and won't even consider resubmitting again until I finish my dissertation. Publishing is a harsh market.

How does this work in the states? Like when do you start on your dissertation? Is it gonna be a monograph or composition, or can you even choose? How does the defense happen, etc?

It varies greatly by discipline, but in the case of my program, you take your coursework, do a residency for one semester, take the qualifying exam, and after all of those are completed, you start your proposal.

That has to be a written document with a literature review and methodology section. Once you complete that, you go back and forth with your dissertation chair making edits until it's ready to defend. You then defend your proposal in front of a committee.

If you pass, you can then start collecting and analyzing data. After that, you present your findings (typically through a written paper, but I've seen alternative forms of presentation). Once again, you go back and forth with your dissertation chair making edits and improving it until you are ready to defend. You then go back up and defend your entire dissertation, and if you pass, voila, you get your degree.

I think one point a lot of people seem to be missing is that your "dream job" may not actually be the dream job you want it to be.

Take the person that wants to be a famous actor. Even if they hit a relatively decent fame status (i.e. smaller roles in larger movies), they realize that in addition to the "acting" and "fame" part (the parts that aspiring actors care the most about) is actually a very small part of the job. There's finding agents, endless auditions, networking, traveling, moving from dead-end job to dead-end job waiting for your next role, etc.

My friend really wanted to be a firefighter growing up. He went and took the classes, got the training, and realized that he doesn't spend all his time fighting fires and saving women and kitties all the time. Most of the time he is doing paperwork, maintaining the vehicles, mowing the grass, taking training courses, dealing with angry citizens at public events, dealing with work drama, and the actual firefighting is not worth everything else.

The problem is that most people's "dream job" is only one small part of the job, usually the part they see on television or the part their friends tell them about. Even a job like a teacher, which lots of people like and can accurately guess what it's gonna look like, gets old. Every elementary education major I work with gets so excited to be a teacher and shaping the young minds. They graduate and do their first year and they're happy. Year 2, they're like "great! Now I can do better". By year 3, they're bored and already feel trapped and want to do something else.

That's the thing with us humans. We can have too much of a good thing.

Wait, so are you saying to scribble out an address in an already-mailed envelope and put a new one, or are you saying putting your destination address as your return address?

Because if the former, that's not possible due to the postmark stamp put on mailed envelopes, showed that it's been mailed once already. If the latter, then that would be pointless. It would only work in town, and if you're just sending mail to a friend, you might as well just deliver it in person at that point if you can't afford a stamp.

or are s*** like being a funeral director that I don't think very many people would voluntarily do as a profession ("if you're good with dead people" lol).

Funnily enough, my friend just got her license for embalming bodies. It's actually a pretty decent gig. Lots of job openings since most people don't want to do that stuff. What she does is take over phone coverage for mom and pop funeral homes who don't have employees and want a weekend off. Basically, when it is slow, Ma and Pa will go on vacation from Ma and Pa's Funeral Services, they call my friend to hold the phone for them for those three days and pay her for it. She may or may not get a call about a body that needs taking care of. Either way, she gets paid. And she can still do her regular job during the week.

In today's work environment, side jobs are honestly the best thing you can do to stay motivated. Not so much for the money (as the money in side jobs is hit or miss), but it gives you something to look forward to. Sometimes, I'll use the down time at my regular job to do research or other tasks related to my side job. Feels good.

I've got a couple of thoughts based on the OP and other posts I've seen in this topic.

1. I agree with those saying that professional life sucks. I have been working a traditional full time job over 5 years and I still do not accept the 8-5 working schedule as the way to live. It's horrible, unproductive, and damaging to your health. There needs to be an overhaul. I'd support 3-day weekends, for example. Or at least, jobs where you make your own office hours as long as you get your work done. Several companies are trying these new methods and productivity has increased. Most employers are just too afraid to change.

2. TC, what you gotta do is make yourself invaluable to your employers so they give you more slack. Work your butt off for a few years and impress them enough that when you start cutting corners later on, they'll turn a blind eye. With my current job, while traditionally 8-5, I would come in at 7:30 and leave at 6pm. I took the tasks no one wanted. I met all deadlines and churned out quality work. A few years in, I started coming in at 9am instead of 8am and no one cared. I'd take 2 hour lunches and no one noticed. After a tough meeting or event, I'd tell my boss I'm heading home early and they didn't care. They knew I was doing my work. And when I threatened to quit to pursue other interests, they bargained with me to stay but making my schedule even sweeter. They allowed me to come into work at 10am every morning and let me do the rest of the hours "from home". I had earned my spot in the company. Obviously, the flexibility of your hours vary from field to field, but I'm sure there are gains you can make somewhere.

3. Another recommendation is to have side hustles. Always be looking elsewhere for possible career opportunities in case you get tired of your current path or are looking for something different. In the last 10 years, I have worked as a substitute teacher on my off days, I've been a teaching assistant in after school programs, I've been a TV weatherman on the side, I've been paid to do short radio ads, I got a research grant in my graduate program to get paid to do some research on my own time, I started a business (more on that below), I self-published a few books and made money off the royalties, I rented out rooms in my house for extra income, and i learned some new trades and skills.

4. Lastly, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of business ownership. Building off of the previous note, find something you like to do and make a business out of it. Like web design? Sell your services on Fiverr.com and then start your own business when you have a decent portfolio. Know how to fix cars? Create an LLC and do it for people locally? Like video games? Become an indie game developer and experiment with things. Sure, the money is great if you make it big, but even if you don't, being your own boss in a business you work hard to nurture and grow serves as your motivation to go to work every day. I started a laser tag business. At first, it was mobile, so I bought some guns and some inflatable walls and travelled on the weekends to set up birthday parties in back yards. It wasn't much money, but it was my business and nobody told me how to run it. Bad days at work were made more tolerable knowing I had my own thing going on. Fortunately enough, business picked up enough that I was able to open my own brick and mortar facility. Even while running that facility I still work my full time job until the business is profitable enough on its own that I can quit (there is still a while to go). But claiming ownership of it helps me wake up in the morning and deal with the day-to-day bs at work. More people really need to start businesses and offer more services for our communities.

Honestly, the majority of people relegating themselves to middle-management or hourly jobs are what makes the fat cats richer, as less people own more of the business profit share. More people should venture out and start businesses of their own.

Yes. My primary job is an administrator at a university. The following are additional income:

1. I rent out my house since my university job requires me to reside on campus. I rent out the three bedrooms for $450, $400, and $350 respectively. I make $1150 a month.
2. My laser tag business. It's still relatively new but I take home roughly $500 a month in profit after all business bills and taxes are paid.
3. My research fellowship. I make $1000 a month doing research for two faculty in my phd program.
4. My book sales. I publish a few books here and there and they net me roughly $100 in revenue a month.

So outside my job, I'd say I make about an additional $2800 per month.
