I mean, I do neuroimaging research and even on baseline with older datasets, you need quite a bit of power to do standard analyses, but with modern high resolution protocols, you need extremely high computing power. You can check out such a dataset here if you'd like:
http://www.humanconnectome.org/

You could even download the data for free and mess around with it yourself if you'd like. Some of my analyses on a small subset of this dataset were too heavy to run on a new $2000 desktop machine.

Anyway, likely a $800 refurbished laptop would do just fine for an undergraduate getting into neuroimaging research. But this is still too much for most people from low SES to pay out of pocket.

The point I've made has been made abundantly clear several times now. Safe 'career' choices completely within your lifestyle are the ones that perpetuate poverty. You really have to over interpret the hell out of what Mike Rowe's saying to interpret it as you are interpreting ("student loans don't count").

I point you back to my $500 laptop getting me through a college career in a computer science major.

While you may need a high end laptop now, how much financial aid are you getting? That is why you get aid, to help with the shit you can't afford yourself. And again, does your school have computers available to use for all this high end data processing or not?

It's an accurate interpretation. You're trying to make it say "I will take on no debt" when that's not what it says. Considering the pledge was originally designed to be given to college students taking a scholarship from Rowe, its a safe assumption that he understands that help will be needed for people going to school >_>

My 2k MacBook is barely sufficient for machine learning which is the brunt of modern research you filthy plebeian.

Anyways to 500

Found your problem, hipster kappa

Ayy. Macs are good for dev since they're UNIX machines. Served me well professionally but a tad too weak now. You're right tho you can use school resources and clusters for computation

I'd also like to note there is such thing as bad jobs. Recognizing when a job sucks can actually be motivation enough to get your shit together and seek something better.

If you fool yourself into thinking you're happy with a dead end job, you're not going to seek out something better and achieve your full potential.

Word. You shouldn't just bite the pillow and hope good things will come your way if you act like a shiny new cog.

Ok, you got me. I said I wasn't a millennial. Do me a favor and show anywhere that I've accused millennials of being the problem? There have been lazy people in every generation who expect others to take care of them.

Then why would you respond to the pledge with: "(This pledge is) accurate. This is how I was raised and is how I know I'm not a millenial?" Your statement directly implies that millenials are the specific generation that would have a problem with this.

I'm praying this doesn't become like almost every other argument on CE where a user can't bring himself to say "Sorry, I misspoke" or "Whoops I fucked up" and instead takes us down a path where we have to define every. specific. word. that was used in a given post.

It's already been determined that everyone in this topic is a millennial or a worst generation gen X. TC is the only one who is 40+ which I believe since I think I've seen him or the other vegy say that before and I have no reason not to believe it.

Just because I wasn't on a fucking roof hammering nails down doesn't mean my jobs were easy.

Well you could define an easy job with some sort of valuation like that, but regardless if I'm paid well because I'm better educated than another person it's not really my problem that I get paid to think. It just means my brain is worth more than your brawn.

Parents of mirreniars told them to "get educated" so they can do lazy jobs instead of hard working ones.

When those jobs stopped existing, they got mad, whined, etc.

What is a hard working job? I've worked some shit jobs in my life and I've also worked jobs where I'm paid well to just think.

Jobs don't exist anymore because there are too many qualified applicants for a limited number of jobs which actually need specialized labor. Because the worlds population is too fucking large and needs to be culled dramatically.

I get the entitled part but that's many because we were told we can do anything and be anything and as it turns out this world is a piece of shit. Also the worlds population needs to be reduced dramatically.

He "did" the job indeed. That isn't the same thing as "working" at the job. He went into the job as "actor" and left as "actor" and during the entire process was "actor". Not once was he "shit cleaner" or "janitor". That's a very distinct difference.

Anyways, you're literally sitting at your computer shit posting so are we all. That doesn't mean anything.

I like Mike Rowe, but this whole "working man" image he puts up is bull shit. He's a communications graduate that hasn't worked an actual "dirty job" in his life.

He did that show for years and he got in there and did every job. Just because he wasn't employed full time at whichever company doesn't mean he didn't work the job. Y'all acting like he just stood there instead of getting up in there. Yea it was a tv show but he still did the jobs. Guy has done pretty much every dirty job in the world if only for a day each and I say certainly say that makes him eligible to speak on such matters

Are you seriously trying to say that working in the sewers every day for your entire life is the same as working for at most 20 hours while getting paid substantially more and becoming famous are really the same thing?

Also this guy is literally a white attractive male who became famous with a garbage degree. His "ethos" that he's presenting is laughable, same with his trivializing of harsh socio-economic systems.

This is literally bootstraps said from the prototypical vantage of success. You can all sycophant and rationalize that you too are like him! But it's bullshit.

I'm mostly being ironic, but I do think we normalize sex at a young age just because we don't want to be prudes which is dumb.

Sex is a pretty serious deal, teenagers shouldn't be trusted lightly with serious deals, we don't need to be like "welp everybody is doing it so we might as well act like sex as young as they want is cool potatoes" the cultural norm we set of "sex is for teens in highschool, all teens in highschool get laid bro" both makes kids push themselves to try to chase what they think is "normal" and makes lots of other teens (like me) feel like absolute shit for years and years for not getting a thing (sex) that I didn't really even want but felt like I needed to do to live up with the expectations of the norms of society.

So yeah, we could all bro-five each other for getting laid at 14 and how big that means our metaphor dicks are, or we could go "hey maybe we shouldn't always side with the more sexually active" this girl is 17 and already has sex rules and standards, 17 is young to be like that, I don't know why to be cool we have to pretend otherwise.

It is normal to have sex at a young age. Society imposes the constraint that adults are 18 years old no more no less. Biology sees no such arbitrary lines.

I'm surprised so many people here have a Bachelors

I guess that shows how meaningless it is, despite its cost

Having an education is not meaningless.

It is when it costs more than $100k, everything included

But what I meant was that the Bachelors degree is the modern version of the high school diploma, despite costing so much

CE is above average in terms of education of its users despite what you think the mass shitposting means. Check on most other sites and more people wont have a bachelors

I wouldn't be surprised if most of them are lying, that or the average intelligence is much less than I previously thought.

Real question is how many people have a degree and something to show for it.

Not too surprising honestly. If you think about the demographic of individuals who would even find gamefaqs.com that cuts down on the entire population space substantially.

Then consider the demographic of people who not only found the site but made an account and frequent a niche message board. Many of us are older, many of us had the luxury of playing video games when we were younger.

We are not a representative sample of the population by any means.

In grad school grades are very lenient. For those of you who have not experienced it, normally you need to maintain a C average to stay in school as a Masters student (A- for PhD). However a C is equivalent to a hardcore F in undergrad. The average tends to be curved to a B+ and a fair grade for an A is about an 80% depending on the difficulty level of the class.

That being said, studying definitely works out well for you.

Pure math is Abstract Algebra. Otherwise Machine Learning.

I've been taking an online class in machine learning, though I haven't done anything on it in like a month. The math is kind of a headache. A lot of it seems to revolve around the ability to look at some formulas and figure out how to vectorize the code so that you can take advantage of parallelization instead of using for-loops.

Yeah implementing ML algorithms is pretty straightforward. It's good to try and get intuition behind the algorithms since you'll likely be treating algorithms as a black box.

Lots of interesting math in ML really challenging stuff but very rewarding to learn the theory.

I just finished my semester here is the course page with nice links to free books: http://francesco.orabona.com/teaching.html

Indeed you can get a CS degree with a C average.

Anyways, as far as the OP goes making a game is an effort of dedication rather than algorithms skills. You need to put passion into it and keep grinding, also having some level of perfectionism (OCD) is good. Getting to the interview stage and then failing a bunch of interviews implies either poor people skills or weak understanding of theory.

$1700 a month? So, minimum wage? You get a minimum apartment.

that's wayyyyyy more than minimum wage

22 days per month × 8 hours = 176 hours
$1700 / 176 h = $9.66 / h which is somewhere in between the Federal and some state minimum wages...

I make $14 an hour, idk what you are talking about.

To be honest reading this topic is scaring me as a 21 year old who's going to transfer to University next next year. I really don't want to get $50,000+ in debt only to not even be able to find a job.

What's your major?

Sorry for the late response, but it's linguistics.

Pair it with CS and you'll be fine. NLP is a hot field but you need to know programming, algorithms and ML for it. Linguistics is a cool field, lots of overlap with CS interestingly enough.

C++ is probably master race, but really who wouldn't want to just hack out some python. Good to know there are people on this board keeping up w/ modern C++ though. Gonna be heading deep into the rabbit hole of prolog and probabilistic variants soon... no more imperative for me except for some ML on data when needed.

Yeah programming jobs have pretty absurd requirements given how brain dead most CRUD jobs are in reality. Plus you have to spend months grinding leetcode and etc for the algorithms test during the interview lol. It's okay I suppose just to weed out people who are too incompetent to even be trusted to develop CRUD.

I have a tattoo and I'm almost certainly objectively superior to you.
