Squaring "one meter" is equivalent to saying "what is the area of a square one meter by one meter?" Well, you'd say "one square meter, or 1 m^2." Imagine the units as a variable of sorts: meter x meter = meter^2. Units don't have an actual "value" though so that's basically all you would say. In your case it'd be "one apple^2", which doesn't make much sense because apples are not units and thus trying to multiply apples is just unintuitive.
