Before Mr. Murray’s arrival on campus, an open letter to the college from several hundred alumni protested that his scholarly opinions were “deceptive statistics masking unfounded bigotry.” And when it came time for Mr. Murray to give his speech, which was based on his 2012 book, “Coming Apart,” an analysis of the predicament of the white working class in the United States, he was shouted down by student and faculty protesters. In chants they accused him of being a racist and a white supremacist. Some of the protesters became unruly and physically violent, forcing Mr. Murray to flee. We have our own opinion, but as social scientists we hoped to get a more objective answer. We asked them to rate the material on a scale from 1 to 9, ranging from very liberal to very conservative, with 5 defined as “middle of the road.” We also offered them a chance to explain why they gave the material the score they did. American college professors are overwhelmingly liberal. Still, the 57 professors who responded to our request gave Mr. Murray’s talk an average score of 5.05, or “middle of the road.” Some professors said that they judged the speech to be liberal or left-leaning because it addressed issues like poverty and incarceration, or because it discussed social change in terms of economic forces rather than morality. Others suggested that they detected a hint of discontent with the fact that Donald Trump was elected president. There is usually an option to reschedule, but that already comes with a steep fee built in. Eh they say that but it's not really true. You can almost always at least get airline credit or a re-schedule* *depending on what you mean by "cheap." If you booked on priceline and got some crazy deal than yeah, probably no flexibility. If you went through the airline or a pretty respectable travel agency and paid full price, then they're going to work with you. Like, say during the voluntary negotiation phase, they offer ten thousand dollars and nobody takes it. And they're simply unwilling to pay any more. At this point, they know they are going to HAVE to bump someone who is NOT volunteering, and that person is presumably going to be pretty mad about it. They've already rejected an offer of ten thousand dollars. If you aren't prepared to offer them more than ten thousand, and the legally required offer is $1350, then why wouldn't you just give them the $1350. I think there may be something to this model I have a theory that there’s a rock-paper-scissors effect on different modes of argumentation. It goes debate-shame-defy. If you want debate your point of view calmly and reasonably, you get beaten by someone who refuses to engage with you as an equal and instead takes your opinion and presents it in the worst possible light and howls shame upon you. That strategy however is then beaten by the Milo Yoannopoulus/Donald Trump strategy of simply refusing to feel shame. Another example might be the “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it” chant. “Yeah we’re gay/right-wing/whatever, what are you going to do about it?” appears to me to be a successful counter to shame tactics. It tells other people who disagree with the shamers that they have nothing to fear by ignoring them. What defeats that simple defiant approach is debate. Or I guess I should say, there's diversity, but the representation levels are super unrealistic. In a futuristic story where humanity has united under one world government to explore the stars, it's super weird that you ever only meet like, one Chinese person, one Indian person, etc. But of course there's always one Irish person and one Scottish person too. As if in the future the Irish will be equally represented in the one-world government space Navy as the Chinese?
