Actually, quite a few people do trash Catholicism for that among other reasons. That's a problem that the Catholic community needs to work toward correcting. Much like the Muslim community should be doing as much as possible to prevent those among them from joining extremist groups that blow up innocent children

I wouldn't hold that against your average soldier. Maybe high-ranking brass, but the vast majority are just following orders. They don't get to pick and choose what conflicts they take part in. The military only get involved where the politicians deem it necessary to get involved.

If the military is in an unnecessary or unjust war, it's the politicians who should shoulder the blame. Soldiers who see combat should be recognized for their service regardless of the political motivations behind whatever conflict they took part in, and the politicians should draw the ire of the public if that conflict is found lacking any real sense or reason behind it.

I don't necessarily agree with this argument in a volunteer service. The army works the same way a business does. They have a need for soldiers to fight wars, their supply is the american people. If the american people stopped volunteering to fight in these wars the government would have 3 options

1.institute a draft, which if people are already not joining the army because they are not in favour of the war would be political suicide.

2. Raise wages to tempt people to join, but then you are still spending more money on less resources.

3. Stop getting involved in unrelated conflict.

And even for the people in the army, The military oath makes it clear soldiers have a duty and responsibility to defy unlawful orders. So yes I can and should be mad at the generals and political leaders who are allowing an illegal torture regime to go on or the use of drone strikes even though the pentagons own figures say they get the wrong target 90% of the time, but I can and should be equally mad at the soldiers who are carrying out the orders knowing full well they go against international law.

It's not always so black and white though. War is very complex. Even moreso nowadays. Sometimes you have to follow orders without understanding the repercussions or having all the answers to questions you might have. No soldier will ever have 100% clarity when it comes to war

I'd point out, by the way, that there are more than a few places where civilians feel themselves just as much at risk from their own country's armed forces than from other countries'. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to trust their government's security forces.

These countries are only able to stand as is bc of neighboring countries/allies that would intervene if a country decided to invade. So still the point stands that it's necessary

But seriously... most military dudes that were actually put in dangerous situations aren't the braggarts. It's always the dickwad who sat behind a computer handling emails that brings up his "service" anytime he talks to a woman.

As far as respecting military service goes, I respect it for the fact that I never wanted to serve and it keeps me from doing involuntary service. And whether you realize it or not every country needs some kind of military force in order to preserve itself. Maybe it's not always, or even mostly, used for self defense but it's still necessary at least for that purpose.

If not for ours and other military forces we'd be potentially living under a global dictatorship where you're forced to serve or be executed

People who text constantly during a date are the worst. You can be disinterested in someone but at least have some basic courtesy. Texting a little is one thing but if you're on the phone more than you are interacting with the person across the table from you then you are a turd... especially if you're letting the other person pay for your date

Had a guy like that get behind me and the gf on a 2 lane highway a few days back. We were going 10-15 over in the fast lane but this guy just immediately sped up right on our ass before we even had a chance to get out of the way and started franticslly flashing his lights and blaring the horn. So my gf was driving and she trapped him in for like 5 minutes next to a giant semi in the other lane while I waved at him. And this fucker kept doing this the entire time. The trucker was playing along too and helping him stay trapped. It was amazing.

When he finally got by us, he barely even went faster than we were. I was like, wtf was the point of all that shit just to get around us and basically do the same speed
