Yeah, one of Fates's biggest problem is that the royals are good. Too good. You have to go out of your way to not use them. Thankfully, I think all the characters in Fates do a good job of establishing their niche, no matter how limited it may be. No unit really feels straight up useless.

I dunno. I hear that criticism a lot and I don't really feel it. Awakening kids are much better than Fates kids, but Fates 1st generation easily beats out Awakening 1st generation for me. Is it just a Hoshido thing? Because I only played Conquest and Revelations and the characters felt fine. Not great, but better than Awakening.

Lissa is also really durable for some reason. And she gets renewal. She's probably the best healer all around, but I hear arguments for Priscilla and Elise.

I love MGS's gameplay! A fairly large reason why MGS2 is my favorite MGS, since I feel like 2 is the smoothest in terms of gameplay. PS1 MGS1 is really weird at first, but once you get used to all its weirdness, it becomes a fun game.

2008 is a banging year. And yet, I remember the disappointments far more than the successes. There are certainly a lot of blockbusters, though. Dunno where I would place this one.

I had a theory that Athena was actually the murderer, but The Phantom was actually Clay, so Athena had a strong reason to kill.

but that's WAY too dark for ace attorney since it screws over basically all of the attorneys

It's hard for me to decide what case is sillier than others, since Ace Attorney is particularly good at being silly one second and being serious another second.

also, starbuck, arguably the character with the best animations in the series. they are SO good.

5-2 longer than 5-3, eh? Well, 5-2 certainly feels longer...! Mainly due to Day 2. I dunno what it was, but it just felt...tiring.

5-3 Trial 2 is great. Hugh/Blackquill/Athena all have great interactions and taking Hugh down a peg or two (...or three) is fun. Hugh's Mood Matrix is an all-time classic. And, of course, Means is a solid culprit in the end. Recreating the statue is too good, even if it lasts a little longer than it should.

There has to be bigger 5-3 haters. I can definitely see why, but it works really well for me. It is super campy and also super...preachy? I dunno. The whole friendship thing and the bad guy being the mean old guy with the flawed beliefs and Athena's hope-y "there's no way they can all be bad!!" thing somehow works out for me and it makes it a case that I'm not used to seeing. Plus, it has really cool concepts and good characters. All the jokes at the series, Apollo being a really great sidekick, and Athena's energy makes it a fun case to go through, anyways.

Blackquill's nicknames crack me up, because they make him sound like someone who spits vitriol and is constantly blasting everyone, but his nicknames are stuff like "Tanuki," "Sad Monk," and "Foolbright." Not exactly the most threatening of nicknames!

I'm obviously team JFA and Leon really covers it. E1-1 is, at most, a little bit better than 2-1. E1-2 is arguably the weakest full-length case in the series. E1-3 is so-so. E1-4 is good and E1-5 is good with an unsatisfactory climax. 2-3 at least has personality and 2-2 is just a good case all around. 2-4 is 2-4.

Plus, I just like how the entire game sort of works together in JFA, where you get a string of more sympathetic murderers, followed by Engarde in 2-4. AAI1 has the smuggling ring and Yatagarasu, which is a cool idea to rope all the cases together under a single villain, but I didn't really feel invested in the whole thing.

Blackquill is great. His 5-2 Day 1 appearance is great because that's the first time we see him and leaves an excellent first impression. His later showings are all compared to that benchmark and it's hard to live up to it. Still a great prosecutor.

Yeah, the whole prosecutor hype thing is a little too much, but it's the whole premise of the game. Prosecutors always have the upper ground, defense attorneys are always the underdog. They can shift it up on you in different ways, but it's a good formula.

I always liked the AA3 Objection remix, way more than the AA1 one. It also fits Phoenix's older, wiser personality. Though, I wonder if we're gonna get new themes in AA7. As much as I like Courtroom Revolutionnaire, I kinda want something new!

I, too, like the Mood Matrix's aesthetics and the general aesthetics of AA5. I always felt the AA5 Cornered song felt "space-y", especially when it shifts its tune. Agreed with DD being the second best soundtrack, right after AAI1.

Yeah, 5-1 is...confusing. Not necessarily complicated, but confusing in the grand scheme. Not exactly the best intro. It's not exactly great that our first scenes of Athena is her being a clumsy anime character and then completely flopping against Payne. And then the next case, our first scene is her being a feisty anime character and german suplexing a police guard.

thank god for 5-3 which really made me rethink my opinions on athena

3D is a little too much for me and it destroys the battery. Sometimes, I put it on for the anime cutscenes and certain animations, though. Maybe the next time I do DD/SoJ, I'll play with 3D on the whole time.

That's really interesting. I guess AAI2 isn't overtly long as I thought. Still a megagame, since every case is really long.

I love E2-5. Much like 6-5, it has quite a few problems, but I really love the ambition of both of those cases and how different they feel compared to the usual epic cases. The showdown with the Mastermind is excellent and everything I wanted it to be. And while that beginning is pretty slow, the second half of the Middle and End more than makes up for it.

I like both American Henry and Japanese Henry. Neat character all around.

I also like Fates translation in general. Awakening's is probably better, but it's not really noticeable to me.

Wonderful topic. I really can't add much since I'm probably younger than most of you all here and the 3D era was basically my first gaming steps. Though, I'm a huge defender of the more modern era of games, so I'll probably be perking up more for those years.

Really insane how many games and how much activity was going on in those early 90s years, though. It sounds real exciting.

Dogen is okay. I was also expecting someone familiar to the series. Not really von Karma, though. Dogen works alright enough.

Sahwit cameo is the best AA cameo. He is, after all, a model citizen.

I always felt like AAI2's Pursuit theme is the best in the series. AAI2's soundtrack is a little underrated in general, but it's definitely one of the weaker soundtracks.

Yeah, 5-4 and 5-5 is probably the length of one singular case. 5-2, 5-3, and 5-6 are all "traditional" cases, though. Who knows. I think I'm going to side with DD being longer, but 6-5 really messes with my sense of time.

I'm not too surprised that E1-5 is below 2-4 and 3-5. Makes sense. I "love" that it basically dwarfs the rest of AAI in length, though. And it's also amusing that the two "long" cases, 1-5 and E1-5 are next to each other in length.

I don't really have anything to say on Kay/Maya's role as a damsel in distress and who gets themselves into it. I don't really read it into any of their characters. Kay running ahead in E1-5 is pretty Kay-ish, I guess.

Also, on AAI2 Kay, I wouldn't say my favorite iteration of Kay is E2-4 Kay. I just think it's a cool perspective of Kay that's not usually shown. My favorite iteration of Kay is.........I dunno. I don't think about these things! She's just a spunky partner, which is a pretty good archetype in AA.

I remember so little of E1-5. Middle and End overshadows so much of the case. Glad to see that both Para and Leon are enjoying themselves on it, though. Maybe I should go through it again, too! I think I got to the first Shih-na testimonies before getting caught up in other things.

Also, I love Ace Attorney character designs. 1-5 has some good ones, but I dunno if it's the stand-out case in terms of design. The only one that comes to mind for me is 3-3, but I dunno if that's it. I just love Blue Screens, Tender Lender, and (to some extent) Tres Bien's designs.

I pretty much agreed with everything about E1-3 End! E1-3 is a fun whatever case for the most part, but the end really brings it home. Haunted House is definitely my favorite of the Little Thief sections, too. I....don't even remember the Little Thief at the end of E1-5.

E1-3, E1-4, and E1-5 are all kind of similar to me on the scale. All of them have their pros and cons. My Notepad file ranking all AA cases back in 2015 (so it lacks AA6) has E-3 at #22, E-5 at #19, and E-4 at #13. ....#13, really? That feels a little too high.

I like Lang's character...the problem is that while he works as a foil for Edgeworth, Edgeworth feels like the dominant person at the end of E-3 and Lang never really catches up. I'd love to see Lang come back in the mainline series as an investigator...maybe for Athena or Apollo? He could fit in Japanifornia or Khura'in well enough, I'd say.

I remember reading that E1-2 came about because they were like "What would be a cool place for a murder? An airplane?" and then made the case from there. It definitely feels like that was the case. E1-2 is basically the definition of an average Ace Attorney case. I still love certain parts of it like when Lablanc falls and Edgeworth pieces everything together with dat Announce the Truth playing.

Definitely agree with E1-2 being the weakest case-exclusive cast. E1-3 also has a preeeeetty weak cast, but I like Paups more than Rhoda.
