If he says that he voted for border funding then Trump might think "oh, this guy went along with me so I guess I'll "reward" him by doing something that any decent person would do without thinking of it as a fucking transaction"

tl;dr: Senator Bob Casey attempts to appeal to Trump's humanity to stop the deportation of a mother and her five year old son who fled to the US to escape gang violence (witnessed a gang murder). They had the paperwork to stay in the country, but DHS rushed the deportation before it could be processed. Predictably, Trump does nothing because he's a piece of shit.

You would think that events like this would lead to some introspection, but he still snuck in "I've voted to secure our borders" nonsense so he looks like a moderate on the issue. As if those votes aren't also horrifying because they cause exactly situations like this.

I actually don't know if that's true. I think a lot of what he says is just stupid and incoherent and spoken in incomplete sentences, so people read into it whatever they want.

Like Trump is trying to talk about why there's unemployment, for example, but Trump's an idiot who knows absolutely nothing about unemployment, so he says "There's, you know, there's a tremendous - a really big, really nasty - tremendous effort, from, from the people - bad people - who will benefit America not producing. And believe me, we aren't producing. We used to produce, but now we aren't" and sure OF COURSE Vlado's going to listen and think "Aha! He hates the Jews, I mean globalists, as much as I do!" But is it a dogwhistle, or is that giving too much credit to someone who we already know is stupid, uninformed, and terrible at public speaking?

I think there are some that are obvious, because you can see how some of his speeches went through revisions. But those cases had other, smarter people working on them. Trump's own off the cuff remarks are harder to figure out.

The mental health conversation is kind of a non-starter too (unless it heavily involves improving mental health care in the country), since people with mental health issues are more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators of it.

But still! I remember election night when I was freaking out, people telling me that he loves LGBT people and will never take any action against them. And I told them they were deluded. And they were.

Those people:

A) hate gay people and were intentionally lying
and B) think that this is just religious freedom (what could be bad about that?) and not an infringement on human rights.

So it's a mix of being deluded and being downright hateful.

If they're trying to bring down the meat industry by personally not purchasing meat than yeah they might as well eat a burger when they're out and feel like it, cuz they're not making a difference anyway. for reference, his methods are effective. drug usage dropped tremendously and he's ridiculously popular among the people. we're talking 70-80% approval rating here. he just has some very monstrous and inhumane methods that he's willing to employ.

Calling the .85 degree celsius warming since 1880 "modest" is more hyperbolic (hypobolic?) than just about anything climate activists have claimed, so I'm inclined to think this guy just playing devil's advocate for hits and it backfired on the NYT massively if there are mass cancellations instead.

Edit: Also he won a Pulitzer prize for "commentary, often enlivened with a contrarian twist" -- none of his winning work had anything to do with climate science, even loosely, so I don't know why you'd even bring that up as if it makes him more informed in some way.
