"S" by itself doesn't exist in Japanese. It can't be Demos, the s needs to be accompanied by a vowel. The reason we know it's usually just straight up an "s" when romanized is due to the intention of the japanese word/name.

I didnt explain it well bc I was literally unaware of pokemon like Gyrarados being a Japanese name because I thought S standalone wasnt a thing in the Japanese language

So why is Su sometimes Su but other times S?

gyarados is literally what you are describing, it's a name based on japanese words that stayed the same in english

if you're not going to accept gyarados you're just making shit up as you go at this point

It was localized tho. Pikachu was not. That was another constraint I meant. But what does gyraradosu mean?

Look, if I made a game and called a character pikachu, and it gets a japanese version and the name is pikachu there, it NEVER had an English name to begin with!

My topic was always about japanese names that were also japanese names in the english version without any localization. Sorry if I didnt make that clear.

Basically I forgot or didnt know there were some that had non japanese names in the japanese version.

youre right. I was wrong about it meaning electric mouse. but its name was made up of japanese words regardless so that isnt entirely relevant unlike other pokemon on that list that are romajii'd other language words.

I just posted where the name "Pikachu" came from. It doesn't mean "electric mouse." Pikachu is not a real word, it's the combination of two words/sounds, just like Dugtrio is a combination of two words.

They did, but it's a different word in Japanese. It appears that for whatever reason, they didn't make the name ACTUALLY "Dug" and "Trio" in Japanese, they specifically made the Japanese name a literal translation of the english "Dug" and "Trio," if I'm understanding it correctly. For all 35 names, they intentionally made them translate to the exact same name in both Japanese and English. The 8 named (Pikachu, Nidoran, etc) are just the ones that have an actual perfect letter for letter translation, the others don't because Japanese can't use the letters the same way and still make the same word, otherwise they'd be the same, too.

See I wouldn't because for example if you took the Japanese characters for Dugtrio and translated it literally into English letters it would be "Dugtrio." However if you then translate "Dugtrio" back into the Japanese version of those letters it becomes Dagutrio or whatever, but that feels like too many steps for me. If the literal romanization of the characters is "Dugtrio," that counts for me.

Paras is definitely a play on the word Parasite, Porygon is a play on Polygon, Arbok is cobra backwards, Mankey is Monkey with an A. Shellder has the dang word in its name guys come on.

it could be they named the pokemon with the English localization in mind. I dont consider that the same as say pikachu or nidoran tho

Seems kinda silly to only count those, since for example Porygon and Porigon are clearly the same, but there is no perfect alphabet translation for that kind of y usage in Japanese. Similarly, how Japan often uses R in place of an english L.

It appears 35 names in gen 1 total didn't change and mean the same thing in both English and Japanese. Of those, 8 are spelled literally the exact same if using purely the English alphabet.

I was gonna give TC the benefit of the doubt and say they were going for a technicality like "Even though it's the same in English and Japanese, it's technically spelled differently" but Nidoran/Jirachi/etc exist

im talking about Gen 1 only and didnt know nidoran was the Japanese name

All of them got english localized names except Pikachu and Raichu. Does anyone know why?
