HOT SPRINGS, Ark. A recent burglary at a Hot Springs water treatment facility led to raw sewage running into Gulpha Gorge near Lake Catherine.

The would-be thief set off alarms on the site of a long-running project that Hot Springs needs to finish to fix a recurring, messy water problem.

We had someone enter a, what's called an air relief valve vault, and it's really tricky to get in, said Bill Burrough, the city manager for the City of Hot Springs.

Late last week, Hot Springs crews made the trek through the woods to the pump station where a thief had gotten in. However, when they arrived, it was a scene of sewage flowing out of the pump.

When they did that, they got a huge surprise, because it's under some intense pressure. So, you know, it had to blow back sewage all over them. [I was] surprised they were able to get out of the vault, Burrough said.

Burrough explained that he was surprised the thief was able to get out of the relief valve vault, where the raw sewage was coming from. While there was damage, he said it was the overflow that caused the most damage.

We're spending over $120 million on this project. It'll probably be over $150 million as we complete it over the past 12 years. We've got about 68 million going on now. And it's really to install new water mains, or wastewater mains, to decrease the amount of overflows that we have that could enter any one of our tributaries, Burrough said.

With the ongoing project that the City of Hot Springs is working on in situations like this, there is still sewage that can run into the bodies of water in the area.

After the discovery of the sewage overflowing, the city took measures to keep water goers protected.

Out of caution, because it did reach a tributary, we went ahead and did what we call a code red, called and notified no swimming in that particular area. Didn't last long, but, you know, it's one that we did issue, because it did, it did have a breach, Burrough said.

However, one question remains. Why did a thief target the valve? Burrough said that it could have been because of the material

We think that they thought that that valve was metal and be able to take that and try to turn that in, but it's actually made out of PVC with some metal holdings. And again, once they kicked that off and realized what it was, they got a pretty big surprise, Burrough said.

Luckily, the city had the materials to fix the valve, which took about two hours to fix. Burrough said that while this incident did not overly impact the wastewater project the city has been working on for over a decade, it's still something that the city is continuing to work on.

Were getting to the end of it and in satisfying our consent administrative decree from a DEQ. So it's something that's very important to us, Burrough said.

The suspect or suspects in the break-in are still unknown at this time.

First game reminds me of many many ok but not great action games of that era. Something I admit to having nostalgia for.

DES MOINES, Iowa The Iowa State Fair Butter Cow is one of the biggest draws for the hundreds of thousands of fairgoers every year, and now that interest is growing outside of Iowa.

The Iowa State Fair Butter Cow will be on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., starting next week.

Sarah Pratt is the butter sculptor at the Iowa State Fair. She said two curators from the Smithsonian explored the fair two years ago to get ideas for a new exhibit called State Fairs: Growing American Craft. After they saw the butter cow, they asked her to sculpt one for their museum.

It really took a few seconds for it to all sink in, and I feel like its still sinking in, she said.

The exhibit is a collaboration involving 43 states across the United States and has been in development for the past five years. The exhibit will showcase over 240 artworks.

The exhibit opens on Friday, August 22nd, and will be available through September 7, 2026. There will be a grand opening celebration on September 18th, where the Pratt family will attend.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. Some rabbits spotted in Fort Collins are showing alarming growths described as black, tentacle-like protrusions coming from their heads.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) confirms the cause is a virus.

The condition is not dangerous to humans or pets, CPW said, but they urge people to avoid approaching or touching the animals.

Recently residents in southeast Fort Collins began noticing the unusual-looking rabbits, including 9NEWS Northern Colorado reporter Amanda Gilbert. Susan Mansfield said she saw a rabbit with black spines or quills around its mouth.

It looks like it was black quills or black toothpicks sticking out all around his or her mouth, Mansfield said. I thought he would die off during the winter, but he didnt. He came back a second year, and it grew."

One person described the rabbit as having a scabbiesh-looking growth over their face.

According to wildlife officials, the growths are caused by a virus that results in wart-like protrusions on the rabbits face or head. The condition is similar to benign cancerous cells and has no known cure, CPW said.

Wildlife officials emphasized that while the virus can spread between rabbits, it is not known to be contagious to humans, dogs, or other wildlife. They said it doesn't hurt the rabbit, unless it grows on sensitive areas like their eyes or mouths.

Although the virus is not considered a threat to public health, wildlife officials recommend giving infected rabbits space and avoiding any attempts to help or handle them.

Shope Papilloma Virus

Shope papilloma virus, sometimes referred to as cottontail cutaneous papilloma virus, is a viral disease that causes malignant tumors to grow in rabbits, often on its head. The virus is seen in wild rabbits, as well as domestic or pet rabbits.

Outbreaks of the disease more commonly seen during the summer and fall, when populations of disease-carrying insects are highest. Keeping rabbits indoors during these seasons is recommended.
