I'm not against the idea of trying to improve sportsmanship by calling people for taunting, but it needs to actually be in your face. If he had turned the other way and done that flex, they wouldn't have called it, and it wasn't directed at the guy on the ground. So yeah, that's the kind of thing that puts the "No Fun League" in NFL.

I tried regular Grimm a few times. Grinding bosses just isn't really my thing. If the boss is optional post-game content, and I can't get it quickly, I probably don't bother.

TBH, I never actually beat Radiance, either. I got there, got sick of refighting THK to reach Radiance, and decided I was frustrated enough with my attempts that I'd settle for saying I did everything else up to that point. I should probably go back and try to fix that since I've played a lot more similar games since and that one's for the actual ending.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting. Meanwhile I settled for the base game and not bothering with Grimm or the Pantheons. I'm not a boss-killer guy or a Soulsbourne fan.

However, after the opening, I feel like the game got much more playable. It's simply not a very welcoming game for people starting off, which I find surprising.

It's almost like there's reasons he fell in the draft. Didn't show that off since college, but that better not become a recurring thing. I remember Ndamokakung Suh played fairly clean with a little while, but became the dirtiest player in the league. Don't want to see Carter go down that path. He better get an ass-reaming, and his pay for that game docked.

Meanwhile, Eagles defense looks pretty porous so far without him on the field. Top defense in the league last year, but definitely not gonna get a repeat in that regard.

I find it easier than Hollow Knight so far

Tutorial boss: Trivial
First real boss: Hits for two, died four times because even though the movements aren't super hard to read, you have to get into the right position after each movement and you don't get a whole lot of time to do that. You have basically no chance to heal throughout. Fight isn't hard, per se, but it's long.
After that: A miniboss that hits for two and requires VERY precise movement. You have to bait him into jumping, you have to run under the jump, and you have to hit him exactly once before backing away. If you do not do precisely this, you get smacked. For how much offense this guy has, he's way tougher than the big guys in Forgotten Crossroads. Died here five or six times learning what I could and couldn't do. And there's no silk with which to heal.
And then: There's a gauntlet in the ants section. Some of those ant types aren't super easy to fight one-on-one, and then we have a gauntlet where you get two at once while the map chick jumps in and helps out. It's so damn chaotic that it took me a few tries before I had a run where I didn't get swarmed by attacks I didn't see coming. The runback also kinda sucks. And because it's so busy, there's no time to heal.

So basically I could creamed in the first two hours. In the time since, it's been smooth sailing. I think I've died once learning a fight, and that's been it.

One thing I'm noticing is that while in HK, healing mid-battle was risky, it was something you could do throughout the fight. Healing in HKSS was advertised as being faster, but it's not. You have to stay in place just as long, and not get hit, or you lose your entire meter, because that's how much it uses. Yeah, you get 3 points of healing, but you also seem to lose 3 points of healing a lot faster, too. And getting back enough silk to heal takes much longer than it did to get soul in the first game. So the expectation is that you have to be super precise, much moreso than before. Playing defensively is not rewarded. Less of a problem after the parts I described above, but it's still a mindset shift.

Okay, you convinced me. If it can crash the shops, clearly it's worthy of my purchase...whenever Steam will let me give them money again.

My first reaction skimming the board and then the sheet is there's too many Broncos pickers for me to feel comfortable switching from my Bengals. At 8/31, I suppose it's not as lopsided as I thought. Gonna stick to my guns, though. I get the people picking Arizona, who is playing the other bottom 2 team as we perceive things now pre-season, but I just don't trust them. Unless you're using literal joycons, you've hit hipster status just by asking which controller you should use. It's a controller. It has two thumbsticks, four face buttons, and some shoulder buttons. Use whatever's comfortable. Depending on your playstyle, you might end up holding out the attack button for long periods, mega man style, or needing precision in swinging (usually) down, but I doubt there's much that's going to push you to your less favorite controller.

When/where are you streaming? When I'm not preoccupied, watching other people play Hollow Knight has become something of a hobby.

There are ways in which it's good and ways in which it's bad. I was more referring to the battle UI, and how it resembles Persona, than the main menu, which I agree is not very functional.

Did Expedition 33 have good art direction...? I thought it was just a bunch of pretty assets thrown together in completely random ways? I say that as someone who mostly liked it because I'm simple-minded and like anything that's vaguely signposted as being artistic, but I was under no illusion that the design was actually good.

Everything about the game's design is very carefully considered and chosen very specifically, from the mash-up of two distinct architectural styles in Lumiere to the way the world is a hybrid of several well-known art styles for story reasons. The character design is a departure from cliche anime and has an impressive level of detail, with many of the aspects of their base outfit helping tell the story of who the character is. The UI and UX has been very well-received. So I'd be confused as to what about this game was considered poor art direction.

Person above you has named a video game world. You say where it's from. Then respond with a video game world of your own.

The "world" does not need to be literally a planet. It might be a single nation or even a city, or possibly something much vaster. For example, the best answer for Star Fox would be "The Lylat System." Basically, wherever the game takes place, on the most zoomed-out level you'd consider reasonable. Tamriel or Nirn are both reasonable for The Elder Scrolls.

World name should be unique. Corneria and Pandora, for example, are both names with multiple possible answers. Don't say Earth without further specificity.

Ori's art is much more vibrant -- and has the bloom settings cranked -- but there is also something beautiful in the stark elegance of HK's backgrounds, too. It just doesn't carry over as extensively into the actual sprites, which border on looking like comic book art.

If I had to guess, the anti-HK people are sick to death hearing about HK and are expressing their opinion where they can. Like, STFU with HK already.

And the pro-HK people (or at least I can speak for myself) are reacting defensively to the overly-strong stance from the first group.

I wasn't going to respond, but when someone says "if you don't like Hollow Knight, you don't like Metroidvanias" I feel like I have to say something!

As someone who only puts Afterimage ahead of Hollow Knight -- which is probably a unique take -- the complaint I hear most often about both games is their length. There are apparently a lot of people who want their metroidvanias to be Gato Roboto, Ori 1, or Guacamelee.

Well, I got both of them and now the game feels like Mega Man Zero, which is a good thing.

It might not help that I'm not a huge fan of Metroidvanias. I like the concept in theory, and there are plenty of good ones, but it's really easy to make a bad one with bad map design. So far things aren't that bad, although it depends on how complex the game gets later I guess. I really don't like how they handle the map system though (you have to buy the pins?! Yeesh).

Glad things are going at least modestly well for you so far. What you're going to find after the Mantis Claw is that the exploration openly up massively. It took me a while post-Mantis Claw to figure out where I could even go, but in hindsight I realized I had at least five different options.

And the complaints about the map are both valid and overblown. Like, yeah, they make you pay for stuff and use a charm notch, but by the end of the game you won't really need the money and you can leave off the lone charm notch if you're up for the challenge of not using the compass.

Man, there are some takes in this thread.

Hollow Knight is amazing. It might not be for you, but that's probably saying that metroidvanias, or at least any over 3 hours long, are not for you. The art is amazing. The variations in the enemies mean that even if you only use normal attacks, the combat is still really good. The exploration is phenomenal. But the one thing that Hollow Knight nails that isn't really being mentioned here, and which is the most important aspect of any game like this, is the movement.

Fluidity is the essence of a sprawling platformer, metroidvania or otherwise, and everything about Hollow Knight simply feels right. Yes, you have to play for a little bit to get some of the movement abilities that contribute so much to that, and most of the people who give up on the game do so before they reach that point. If the game can't sell you on itself before getting to the Mothwing Cloak and the Mantis Claw, then you're probably in the "not for you" camp.

But if it clicks, it will click.

The only metroidvania I had played before HK was Super Metroid, which I hadn't even finished. Since then, I've played 30+, looking for a game that can capture the same feelings. Maybe this week, I'll finally find one.
