A teenager died Saturday in rural Iowa, after he was shot by a fellow hunter who apparently mistook him for a squirrel, officials said.

Carson Ryan, 17, was hunting squirrels outside Iowa City when gunfire from someone in his group struck him in the back of the head, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. In a news release, the agency said Ryan "was mistaken for a squirrel by a member of his hunting party."

The incident took place at around 3 p.m., according to department.

Ryan later died from his injuries at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center in Iowa City. His death is currently under investigation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the sheriff's office in Washington County, where the shooting occurred, officials said.

The boys track and field team at Washington High School reacted to Ryan's death in a social media statement, which accompanied an image of the teen wearing the team's uniform.

"Washington Boy's Track & Field team asks you keep Carson's Mom, family, classmates and teammates in your hearts as we navigate the devastating loss of Carson. Our hearts are broken," the post said.

Pekin Schools, another school district in the area, asked students and staff to wear the colors of Ryan's team Monday.

"Our hearts are with the Washington High School community as they mourn the tragic loss of one of their students," the district said in another post. "Pekin schools invite all staff and students to wear orange and black on Monday, September 29th as a sign of support Carson Ryan, his family, the Washington School District, and community."

A GoFundMe campaign launched in the wake of Ryan's death has raised more than $50,000 as of Wednesday morning. Its description said the teen was "a son, friend, and bright light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him."

"His kindness, humor, and genuine spirit touched countless lives, and his loss leaves an immeasurable void," it added.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. A Virginia Beach man suffered a massive heart attack while driving over a month ago, despite working out regularly. Luckily, the spot where his car crashed is right next to a Sentara cardiologist's office, who ran outside and took swift action.

Now, Jeff Geraci is sharing his story so others aren't taken by surprise by sudden, potentially deadly heart issues.

Jeff says he has a second lease on life, especially given how serious the heart attack was.

"My widow maker, the lower anterior descending artery was 95% blocked, and the upper part, and it was 90% blocked on the lower part," he said.

Jeff says he was driving home after working out at Orange Theory Fitness in the Hilltop section of Virginia Beach when suddenly, he stopped breathing.

"The confusion when I woke up with things in my arm and people running around, it was like a dream, a muddled dream, and foggy," he recalled. "I asked the nurse what happened, and he said, 'You have a heart attack. You crashed your car.'"

The 64-year-old financial planner remembers exercising on the rowing machine, lifting some weights, followed by some time on the treadmill.

"I sat in the car because something didn't quite feel right. Sipped some coffee, and I was going to sit there and close my eyes for a few minutes. But instead, I decided to drive home," Jeff shared.

He was driving down First Colonial Road when he had the attack, crossing over multiple lanes of traffic. He didn't hit any cars on the busy roadway before running into a sign of a nearby business. Shortly after, his vehicle came to a stop in the parking lot.

It so just happened that he crashed near the medical office of Dr. Deepak Talreja, the chief of cardiology for Sentara Health, who heard the crash.

"I sprint over there, calling 911 on my phone," Dr. Talreja recalled when sharing what happened with Jeff. "When I got to your car, what I saw was the windshield was shattered and your airbags were deployed, and it was hard to see you because you were surrounded by airbags and a shattered windshield."

Dr. Talreja says after assessing Jeff, it was clear that the heart attack was severe.

"You weren't breathing, and you didn't have a pulse SCD, sudden cardiac death. And what that means is the heart just isn't doing the job, and so it's a form of death," he explains. "But fortunately, we got things restarted very quickly, and so God was watching out..."

Dr. Talreja stresses it was the quick response that made the difference: "So if he'd gone eight minutes or so without CPR and without blood flow, then we can probably resuscitate the heart for another 10 minutes or so, but the brain doesn't recover, and so [he] wouldn't be with us today."

Jeff says he has a family history of heart issues, but he thought his active lifestyle would keep him in the clear.

"My father had two heart attacks. My mother died of a heart attack... one sister has heart issues," he shared. "I've been an athlete since I was 14 years old. I work out all the time. I ran marathons, [I thought] it's not going to happen to me."

I asked Jeff why he wanted to share his story. "It's such a testimony of God's greatness, of all the things that had to happen to keep me alive," he responded. "Kurt, I'm blessed. It's a miracle. God was there, and thank God Dr. Talreja was there."

Jeff acknowledges he's still processing this miracle: "I got an opportunity to come back, so there's got to be a reason. And every morning, I pray and think about, if I'm here, I need to be doing more than I was doing... Try to be a better person every day. Try to make everybody smile every day. Try to be an example for my family and warn them and friends. It's wonderful. I mean, it's a miracle."

Jeff is back to working out and he says he'll continue to get checked out by doctors. He's already made changes to his diet and stopped drinking alcohol. He believe his case drives home the point of knowing your family history and asking yourself a question that could end up saving your life: when's the last time you had your cholesterol checked?

A trooper from the Florida Highway Patrol who was providing security for Florida A&M coach James Colzie III during FAMUs game at Florida Atlantic on Sept. 6 died less than two weeks after he suffered a broken leg when a player rolled into him while he was standing on the sidelines.

According to the Fraternal Order of Police Florida State Lodge, Craig Gaines died Sept. 19 at his residence. The Facebook post said Gaines death was related to medical complications from his leg injury.

MACON, Ga. An alligator was found on Rocky Creek Road, near the McDonald's parking lot on Sunday.

For at least two days, a 12-foot alligator was spotted lounging near the restaurants drive-thru, according to the Bibb County Sheriffs Office.

On Sunday, the situation escalated when a group of curious bystanders was seen attempting to wrangle the large reptile themselves even duct taping its snout before law enforcement arrived.

Thankfully, no one was hurt and neither was the gator.

Mandy Jackson, who works at the McDonalds, said she saw the alligator multiple times throughout her shifts over the weekend.

We have an alligator that has been here for two days, Jackson said. Its not going to be the first alligator, and its not going to be the last. But I think the alligator is hungry... I think its hungry.

While the gator didnt make it inside for a Big Mac, it definitely drew a crowd.

Ive never seen one out here before, said Larry Harris, a Macon resident. But Ive seen them down at the landfill thats why they stopped letting people go down there. They dont want you getting too close to gators.

On the scene, multiple Bibb County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department units responded, and the area was taped off.

The Macon-Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones posted on Facebook, urging people to stay away from the area.

"The alligator is back at McDonalds on Rocky Creek Road avoid that area!" he said.

The alligator seems to have been in that area since Saturday afternoon, according to social media posts from the community.

People pulled over to snap photos, shoot videos, and get a glimpse of the massive reptile.

But what surprised officials most wasnt the gator it was the crowds reaction.

I have not seen a reaction like this where people are so curious they try to capture a gator themselves and put themselves in harms way, said Captain Linda Howard with the Bibb County Sheriffs Office. They decide theyre going to tape the gators mouth and take selfies thats very dangerous.

The gator was finally captured by a licensed local trapper just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The animal is now safe and on its way to a private pond in Laurens County.

According to Bibb County Animal Control, alligators are relocated to Department of Natural Resourcesapproved areas to prevent illegal hunting or harm to the animals.

Howard also offered a reminder for future wildlife encounters.

Call us and have the professionals remove it, she said. We want everyone to be safe we dont want anyone to get hurt.
