The Binding of Isaac

Simmering on the rest. Diablo and Hades are both great picks, but the genre feels very indie-specific to me (Spelunky, Dead Cells, 20XX, Enter the Gungeon, Crypt of the Necromancer.....) so I need to process some more thoughts on that...and then also, clearly Rogue is the influence but I never played it or maybe even saw it before, so...gotta think some more.

But BoI is for sure getting my vote.

Year and eight days ago anyway.

I never finished TotK -- quit when I got to my first dungeon. Ultrahand's a cool mechanic, but it lost me trying to fit it into a Zelda game as the main ability. I liked running around, finding things, ascension, and floating through the sky...just didn't feel compelled storyline-wise beyond the opening scene.

Six months ago it seemed like people were very much TotK > BotW (like 75% if I remember it right), so here's a different poll. Breath of the Wild is the only 3D Zelda-game of from the past two decades that held my attention the whole game personally. The rest have cool moments, but they just didn't hold me (though shout-outs to Link Between Worlds in the 2D side of the series). Too bad Wind Waker misses this timeframe...ah well.

I agree Spec Ops: The Line did not hold up as well when I replayed it a year or so ago. It's moments are still excellent, but the gameplay that was once brushed off as intentionally basic to fit the genre now just feels too weak.

Alternatively, The Stanley Parable still holds up for me. Ultra Deluxe helps for variation, but beyond that it's just nice to revisit every now and then. Still the top of its genre of walking simulators.

Mario has at least two other 2D Mario games that does everything I want out of SMB1 much better than SMB1, and the game was such a hit that now we have four decades of platformers to compare against it. Then again, I didn't love SMB1 back in the day either.

It makes sense to start the kids there. Seriously it has a lot of quality design to respect about it, but also I don't know what it's like for people who played games for years but not ever playing SMB1 to then go play SMB1. I don't know what reactions in that context would be like.

Super Mario 64 was my favorite game of all time for many years. It kinda is by default nowadays, dunno that I have a confident answer that rises above my nostalgia.

The Switch port from Super Mario 3D All-Stars disappointed me. The camera that I defended many times before just got on my nerves too much with that release. I heard some commentary about how the Switch's controller is not well-suited for SM64's camera but I dunno.

Still a fantastic game and still got 120 stars, but now I might take Banjo-Kazooie over it as a platformer or some other more modern releases nowadays over it overall.

That disappointment in mind, it's not enough to fit this list. I'd rather see SMS or SMB1 here out of the mainline Mario games.

HaRRicH posted...
I suspect this remaster is the story of a perfectionist simmering on really little details for fifteen years and finally having new money and technology to better pursue them.

So, now that I've 100%'d the base game and gotten some hours into the commentary, there was a commentary quote that I'll paraphrase here:

~"This Anniversary Edition is about getting the last 10% done."

To me, this checks out. So many little details mattered much more to them than I previously did, and they mostly nailed those little differences but they are little. Cannons that fire out clouds now sound more like thunder, rabbits have better animation, they remixed a song that was previously just reusing an earlier world's song, a wall was a little clunky with reused assets until now, camera zoom that allows certain stages to be framed better for modern TVs...all those small things.

HaRRicH posted...
I do also have the theory that this remaster is also a story of a game designer wanting to teach more people how to make games like this -- or even if not like this, how to be more creatively open.

Als gonna bring this back: if you look in the credits, you'll see this game is available for free when used for educational purposes. I understood Minecraft does this. Is this common for other games? Regardless, this remaster is clearly instructional about its successes, struggles, and philosophies.

So, I'm not done yet, but I'm ready to jump to conclusions: this is absolutely the same game as before except better graphics and lots of well-done commentary.with some new puzzles interspersed along the way. The new puzzles so far are nice, but also they don't seem to be the point as much as it is about learning from the commentary...and the graphics are nicer, but not like an exceptional amount nicer unless you just love parallax.

The commentary is the reason to purchase this. It's a classic game that now comes with a teacher. Blow's trying to change the landscape and I fully expect The Witness to do a similar remaster within the decade in hopes of people making better puzzle games.

YOUR CARD FOR WOMEN'S NAMES:
Madison Rebecca Melissa Zoey Friday
Jocelyn Ashley Priya Mackenzie Amanda
Lisa Chloe Emma Samantha Gertrude
Belinda Bonnie Charline Taylor Bella
Nicole Corrine Natalie Ava Riya

VS ME

Amber Leigh Holly Wiatta Caitlin
Danielle Evelyn Angelica Emily Sherry
Amelia Renee Friend Laura Amy
Zoe Deanna Maria Lenae Helena
Leslie Mallory Ashley Raine Natasha

Bingos: 0-0, tie
Names: 11-16, me

Ya'll were only close to a bingo once and needed Riya to land it, For me, I'm really surprised there wasn't an Amy -- that alone would have landed me two bingos and therefore the card and game. Amber's almost as surprising -- woulda been one bingo for me. Angelica...eh, I'll accept there wasn't one, though there was an Angel named and I wanted to count that. Biggest surprise: no Melissas.

YOUR CARD FOR MEN'S NAMES:
Jack Finn Ronald Wolfgang Cole
Nate Tyler Amir Jayden Reese
James Robert Matthew Dustin Ludwig
Dick Ralph Muhammad Max Ibrahim
David Alexander Hunter Carson Lee

VS ME

Ryan Phillip Miguel Aaron Eric
Alex Joseph Trey Nathan Mario
Peyton Dustin Jason Chris Nicholas
Terry Travis Blake Lucas Brandon
Richard James Joshua Timothy Thomas

Bingos: 3-2, ya'll
Names: 19-18, me

We both got the first column and the \-diagonal. Ya'll just got the bottom row too, which I woulda got too if I have a Timothy -- damn, really? There was a Travis announced which could have given me a bingo, but it was used as a last name so I held back. I was also just a Dustin, Miguel, or Mario away from more bingos. ya'll had several one-aways too though: Wolfgang, Amir, and Ralph (who would have given you two bingos). Dustin is the only name guessed by both sides but was not named. Biggest surprise: Muhammad was in a feminine name for a feminine person so I didn't count it for the men's card -- maybe next time I should just let names count anywhere, but that might game it out for versatile names too much like Stewart. Probably fine really.

YOUR CARD FOR LAST NAMES:
Powell Kelley Deluna Winters Blackthorne
Williams Brookes Patel Kim Clarke
Jameson Franklin Campbell Ramirez Blake
Poots Wiener Smith Robinson Park
Jones Hernandez Collins Lee Gomez.

VS ME

Adams Smith Merriman Strong Johnson
Spencer Thompson Cohen Guiterrez Cooper
Corts Jackson Friend Gibson Barlow
Cage Mitchem Spears Hines Bond
Langford Toledo Hill Lennon Wilson

Bingos: 0-0, tie
Names: 13-9, ya'll

Campbell was the only centerpiece to not land, which would have given ya'll a bingo if that had landed. I thought picking Campbell over Williams was a tough choice on your part...but hey, it worked out anyway with you still getting more names. You needed a Poots! Poots would have given you a bingo! I was only close to a bingo once, and Toledo was more of a longshot than some others that also weren't named. We had a Blake for a first name but not a last name. Biggest surprise was me remembering too late that I only know the last name Cage from movies and video games.
