Live service seems like it's less effective in the realm of single player campaign based games that are exclusively or almost exclusively pve.

That said is Minecraft a live service game? It is, isn't it?

It is predatory but, as I mentioned before, it only works if you have a great game that people want to keep coming back to. People aren't suddenly losing control of their bodies and minds and are hopelessly forced to buy this item. They keep doing it because they keep deriving enjoyment from it. The enjoyment may be based on delusion but at least they have that special moment in time where they are happy.

I love live service games.

If you group the the MMORPG subscription based model then I have been playing these games non-stop almost my entire life until even now. The biggest difference with the MMORPG subscription model is they are more willing to make drastic game altering changes every few years while the current live service model just stays mostly with the same exact game and builds on it.

Even without the MMORPG model being counted I have been playing these games for an insanely long time. Even back in the 90s with the Microsoft Gaming Zone had some of these types of games where the base game never changes but you still just keep playing it forever. My earliest memory of the modern structure though is being an early adopter into playing League of Legends. It is very possible I played something that fit the current model even further back but it isn't worth remembering at this time. I loved playing League of Legends season after season without the base game really changing much at all. And during that time I just kept picking up more and more live service games. For AAA titles, the Forza Horizon series (which I absolutely love) were pretty early adopters of live whole live service thing in a player friendly manner. Since they started with weekly content releases in FH3 I have played it pretty much every week doing the weekly stuff all the way until now with FH5.

I just love having a reason to keep coming back to my favorite games over and over again. And the reason really could be any reason at all. The fact of the matter is I just love playing these games so any reason will get me to come back and have an enjoyable experience. It also gives you a new perspective of the games for having a different purpose for playing the game than just to complete the story or all the base content. You are essentially on a mission to complete goals within your favorite worlds.

Let's talk about the perceived negatives now. Many dislike this modern implementation due to its more predatory practices like taking advantage of FOMO or gambling addiction or even people just chasing sweet sweet dopamine hits. Which is completely true, they do prey on these type of things. But the thing is, these practices only work if people actually enjoyed playing the game in the first place. At no point ever have I felt the need to download and play a shitty game because it is offering an exclusive time limited skin for a character. I will, however, chase that skin every single time for a game that I genuinely love playing. And in that way I am just playing a game I love for a predatory practice that gives me dopamine hits and I enjoy myself even more.

Another negative is that it has delayed the release of future titles in a popular AAA series, like Grand Theft Auto for example. Which is true but I am at absolutely zero shortage of amazing games out there that I still have to play. With live service games, I can continuously come back to the titles I love the most and still explore the vast endlessly array of quality games that exist out there that I haven't gotten to yet. Even now, independent developers are putting out some of the best games ever that no one would ever play if the market was oversaturated by soulless big name titles that are only releasing as cash cows because they know the name of the series alone is enough to get people to buy it.

That's my defense for them and reasoning for loving them. It is also possible that you too love these games and do not even realize it yet.

Caring about the planet isn't as trendy as it was 4-5 years ago. We are just fucked and accepting it now.
