If we factor in sales then it should be noted that Dragon Quest 1 sold 3 million on NES, which is not that far from 3s so its not like a FFVII situation where one game towers over the others. More importantly, Dragon Quest 1 sold MUCH better than 3 in North America at a stonking 1.5 million copies, of which a million were part of a subscription deal with Nintendo Power which is itself pretty notable. Even excluding that though it still outsold 3 in North America roughly five to one. The popularity of 3 was driven purely by Japan, while 1 was more of a global hit.

Well DQ3 came out in the west after the SNES was already out so it was kind of a tough sell

In Heart Gold I caught a Koffing in the Burned Tower and named it Cody. I also caught a Raticate on Route 39, which I named Kirby Jr. In Platinum I caught a Machop on Route 206 and named him Shattered. Mr. Coronet was a Geodude, which I don't need so I didn't catch it. Route 208 was a Budew, which I caught and named Rose (yes I'm very creative thanks for noticing).

Ana finally evolved into Gyarados and learned Bite, which made Fantina a bit of a cakewalk. Ana kept getting put to sleep, confused, and even burned at one point, which made it annoying but it was definitely the easiest badge so far. With three badges in hand, I can buy Great Balls at the Mart so I decided to hit the Wayward Cave and hope for a Gible. Unfortunately, it was a Zubat. Oh well.

Gen IV - Gross, I don't like any of these, and Probopass and Rhyperior are particularly bad. Bonsly is kind of cute I guess but baby Pokemon suck.

Gen VII - Lycanroc is good, which is enough to beat out Gen 4, but that's the only compliment I can give this group. I don't like the Alolan Geodude line, Minior is meh, and Stakataka and Nihilego suck.

Gen IX - Not a terrible lineup, but no real favorites for me.

Gen V - I like the Crustle line, but the rest of the lineup is pretty forgettable.

Gen VI - Tyrantrum rules and Aurorus is pretty good, but the Barbaracle line, Carbink, and Diancie drag it down a lot. Mega Aerodactyl sucks too.

Gen VIII - Coalossal is fantastic, Arcanine is really good, and Kleavor is solid. Avalugg and Stonjourner suck.

Gen I - Kabutops and Golem are great, don't care much for the rest but nothing terrible here.

Gen II - Tyranitar is awesome, Sudowoodo is funny, and the rest are a least decent.

Gen III - Armaldo is my favorite Rock type, and Aggron is up there. Lunatone and Solrock are pretty good as well. There are some duds like Nosepass and Regirock, but they aren't bad enough to outweigh the heavy hitters at the top imo

Gen VII - I don't like anything here. Maaaaybe Cosmog

Gen IV - Chingling is cute but nothing else does anything for me

Gen VIII - Relies too much on variants of older Pokemon, but Orbeetle is pretty good. Calyrex, Indeedee, and Mr. Rime are awful and drag it down a lot.

Gen VI - Also relies too much on older Pokemon, and I don't even like most of the Megas. Meowstic is pretty good though, but Hoopa sucks.

Gen IX - I like Armarouge and Veluza a lot, and Scream Tail is pretty solid, but the rest is kind of whatever

Gen III - Spoink is amazing but Grumpig is a disgrace. I like Metagross, Gardevoir, and the celestial rocks but the Meditite line and Deoxys drag it down.

Gen I - Slowbro is top tier, Starmie is solid, and the Alakazam and Exeggutor lines are alright, but don't care much for the Hypno line and actively dislike Mr. Mime and Jynx. Mewtwo is good but not a fan of Mew.

Gen II - Xatu, Espseon, Slowking, and Wobbufett yes please. Smoochum no thanks. Lugia is pretty good for a legendary too.

Gen V - Reuniclus is my favorite Psychic type, and Sigilyph is top 5. I also kind of like Victini even though I hate Mythicals out of principle. Really this is a Reuniclus and Sigilyph carry job though.

I don't like Poison type much, yikes

Gen VII - I don't care for anything here. Ultra Beats suck.

Gen IV - Not a single Pokemon I care about

Gen V - Trubbish is alright, Garbodor is a step down and everything else is meh

Gen VI - Only one new line and it's not great. Mega Gengar and Beedrill are the only reason it's this high

Gen III - Seviper is cool and Dustox is alright, and you can keep the rest

Gen II - Crobat is good, the spiders and Qwillfish are decent but not great.

Gen IX - Pretty much carried by Clodsire, but I also like the vacuums and Iron Moth

Gen VIII - The regional variants help a lot, but Toxtricity is also pretty good.

Gen I - Yeah agreed with Kenri here, I would take this lineup over the rest combined. Gengar, Ivysaur, Nidoking, Beedrill, Vileplume... it's really incredible how stacked Gen I is and then there have been like 5 Poison types since that I care about at all

We're finally back in Heart Gold after that brutal stretch of Platinum, and this first order of business is beating Whitney and her infamous Miltank. The good news? I have a Geodude, which resists all its attacks. The bad news? chey really loves that cow booty apparently. I kid you not, he refused to act 12 turns in a row because of Attract. Felt like playing with disobedient Pokemon all over again. I eventually got tired of it and switched into Poka, who finished the job. With relative ease. I collected my third badge, the Squirt Bottle, and head for Route 36. I catch the Sudowoodo and name him Wally. Why? It was the first thing that popped into my head, that's why. I continue to Route 37 and catch a Spinark, which I named Kenri. This is your punishment for your lack of faith in ctes the Sunkern!

Oh right, I also caught a Meditite in Platinum on Route 211. After looking through the topic for someone to name it after, I spotted user Mewtwo59 and the idea of a little garlic head monkey named Mewtwo made me chuckle, so I did it. Welcome to the squad.

this sounds hard

As I mentioned, Kirby was slain by an Abra in the Forest. After I made it to Eterna City, I wanted to get the gym done with as quickly as possible for obvious reasons. Of course, you're forced to fight every trainer in there which was very tedious. The battle against Gardenia didn't go well either, and unfortunately we have to say good bye to Raka, as I got a little careless and got him killed by a critical Magical Leaf. RIP. It took me forever and a billion potions to kill Roserade with Ermy, but hopefully things should go better from now on, as the cap increased to 30. We'll never forget you, Raka and Kirby.

9. Gen VII - Toucannon deserves so much better, but everything else is so bad.

8. Gen VIII - Yikes. The H-Zorua line, Obstagoon, and Ursaluna save this from being an absolute disaster, but it's never good when your only good Pokemon are evos or variants of existing Pokemon.

7. Gen VI - Mega Pidgeot and Pyroar are great and Heliolisk is okay, but Diggersby is terrible and everything else I could live without.

6. Gen IV - This is a tricky one to rank. There's some great stuff like Bidoof, Porygon Z, and Munchlax, and then there are abominations like Lickilicky, Purugly, and Ampibom. A very up and down generation.

5. Gen IX - Other than the Grafaiai line, everything is at least solid. Nothing really stands out as amazing, but my favorite is probably Cyclizar.

4. Gen I - As usual Gen 1 is pretty safe, which leads to a lot of good, but very little great or terrible. Snorlax and Ditto are the stars here.

3. Gen III - Swellow is one of the best early birds, Skitty is adorable, and Zangoose is such an edgelord and I love it. Castform and Kecleon are interesting concepts, at least. Zigazagoon is pretty great, but I don't care much for Linoone.

2. Gen V - I like Male Unfezant, Cinccino, and Braviary a lot, and Bouffalant, and Sawsbuck are pretty good too. The rest are only okay though, and having a Mythical docks it some points.

1. Gen II - Furret and Teddiursa are top tier friends

Every fight is a potential disaster when none of your Pokemon obey

Almost lost several Pokemon to a single Piplup

Raka and Ermy will fight together and win!

This actually happened! After a bit of grinding, including running around in circles in Floaroma Town for what felt like hours, I decided to take on Mars with the dyamic duo of Ermy, the Level 15 Togetic, and Raka, the level 16 Quilava. It... actually went a lot better than I was expecting. Ermy has great defense and managed to land two Charms (one intentional, one not) which rendered Purugly mostly powerless. He did get poisoned by the Zubat though, at which point I switched into Raka to tank some hits while I healed. Then a combination of Returns and Extrasensory (whichever Ermy felt like using lmao) I took down Mars and cleared a major hurdle.

Also I didn't mention this but I've been playing with an unofficial rule that I need to stay within one badge on both games, so I can't beat Whitney before Gardenia, for example. This is so I can't just go to Victory Road on Heart Gold and catch some level 50 Pokemon to make Platinum easier

MZero has beaten Metroid

It finally happened, and by god I wish it happened sooner. This game is really great once you get past the early game. Metroidvania is my second favorite genre, and you can feel how this game created the foundation for future titles. I've played Zero Mission before, and usually I'm a remake guy, but this game might just be an exception. What an absolute work of art that is perfect just the way it is. Hard to believe this is an NES game.

I don't want to go into too much detail in case someone who hasn't played through it yet reads this. It's a game you really have to experience first hand to truly appreciate.
