Was waxing nostalgic for comics I read as a kid, and found some old issues of the UK Sonic comic in a box in the garage... written by Mark Millar.

Apparently he can write stories without Grant Morrison AND without horrible violence? Who knew!

Sonic gamez

Sonic Colours: God, I wanted sonic to be good. I really did. But after Shadow the Hedgehog, I just gave up- missed 2006, thankfully, and Unleashed despite LtM's ravings about it, but Colours ending up being hyped by people who hadn't cried wolf before. And... Colours is almost there. Almost. The level design is big, there's 2D segments galore... but.

1) The 3D still has tendency to glitch out at times, which was tolerable back in the DC games but not so much now.
2) Sonic controls like a feather stuck in a typhoon

which brings us to...

Sonic Generations: Sonic, even in the 3D levels, controls... decently, and the 2D levels are legitimately good- even the ones NOT ripped wholesale from ages past. This actually gives me hope. Best Sonic Game Since God SA2 Maybe Has It Seriously Been That Long.

Also known as playing Final Fantasy XIII.

Is it that bad? I've heard it's similar to Xenoblade- large areas with MMO-style quests, lots of british voice acting, control one character while providing AI commands to the others, so I was thinking of checking it out.

God I got that for christmas. If it feels more derivative than Brotherhood did.... : |

oh a few more

Donkey Kong Country Returns: I have odd tastes when it comes to platformers. Most games I love them to be as open as possible, to the detriment of practically everything else, but I prefer platformers to be somewhat linear- multiple paths through a level, yes, but not an emphasis on collecting coins etc. As such, I never liked DKC1 (which without the collecting had some of the blandest levels this side of Croc) and I never saw 2 as a crowning achievement of the genre. DKCR is another matter- it still has some collecting elements, but the levels ramp up in difficulty to be entertaining, with some inspired level gimmicks later on. Best game in 2011 to let you throw Diddy into pits repeatedly.

Mana Khemia PSP: Loading times so bad. Horrible attempts at plot saved by some humour actually working, strange for a jRPG. Not sure I want to buy its sequel anytime soon, but the focus on item crafting intrigues me. I normally have a love/hate relationship with the genre, but I guess last year it wasn't so bad? Best game in 2011 to have a sword that shoots shurikens.

Portal 2: Why is Stephen Merchant in my game get out and make fun of Karl some more. Feels a bit bloated compared to Portal 1, and the puzzles never get quite so fiendish, but it's still a sequel to bloody Portal. Best game featuring potatoes as a plot point, possibly ever.

Arkham City: The metroidvania to open-world shift didn't do the game any favours, but going from some of the worst boss battles in an AAA game to one of the best should be celebrated, and it has Rhas Al'Ghul and the Mad Hatter (and keeps the Riddler), thus making it a better game than Asylum overall. Best game featuring Nolan North putting on a british accent in 2011.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: I can't believe I forgot this. This is probably my GOTY- it's dumbed down from Deus Ex in some ways, but that still makes it more complex than 99% of games that came out in the last 5 years that aren't PC exclusive games about Victorian-era economics. Multiple paths through each level, sidequests, the best social encounter system I've seen in a game (yes, even better than Mass Effect's HIT BUTTON TO PUNCH), and the ability to read hundreds of inane emails. Sorted.

It's not without problems- the transhumanism debate is boiled down to 'evil corporation' versus 'PEOPLE WITH HEARING AIDS ARE ABOMINATIONS AGAINST GOD', the voice acting of the Chinese keeps the 'borderline racism' tradition of Deus Ex alive, and the choices you make through the game are frustratingly pointless with regards to the ending, but it's heart is in the right place; hidden in a nonsensically designed vent system.

**** I had way too much free time last year. Most of these are games I bought years ago, and decided I needed to finish off...

***SPOILERS MAYBE?***

Xenoblade
: This really shouldn't have been a game I liked. MMO-level side quests, of the sort that involves killing 12 moose-squirrels then killing 15 squirrel-mooses. A plot filled with jRPG cliches. A mascot character, for god's sake. And yet I did. I think it helped I played this after Uncharted 2 (OOPS SPOILERS) and the ability to jump off a bridge near a giant waterfall to explore the lake beneath it after so much railroading really made me feel good about the game. Giant landscapes with interesting wildlife things to genocide is always good fun, and the simple structure of the quests actually helped quite a bit (especially as they had little subplots to spice things up, even when 90% of the quests fell into the category mentioned above). The 'predict the future' mechanic made battles not actually lose their lustre even till n the end; swapping characters with their different playstyles also helped the game feel fun way past the 60 hour m- HOW MUCH TIME DID I SPEND IN THIS ****ING GAME

Fallout 3: I think I played this last year? Never finished it. Going from New Vegas to this was like going from like, Gene Wolfe to Kevin J. Anderson. Dungeon crawling in a wasteland isn't my thing and the grating voice acting and... writing ('hello i will give you all the socioeconomic information about my small town stranger') made the traditional fallout high points of actually doing quests actually painful. However, if you want to play something with the worst in-game radio host of all time, this will please you greatly. Or I guess not please you. Or something.

Marvel vs Capcom and Ultimate: ZELLLLOOO! ILLSHOWYOUWHATTERRORISALLBOUT! JUSTDIE! ZELLLLOOO!

Street Fighter IV AE 2012: yep definitely a street fighter game

Assassin's Creed: An attempt at an open world game with nothing to actually do outside story missions that follow the same basic pattern through the game. An attempt at a decent main character arc gutted by the protagonist being unsympathetic and whiny for a good 80% of the game. Relatively little of the game actually about assassinating, though a lot of stuff about creeds. Only finished due to Karma Hunter saying ' no seriously play it to enjoy 2 trust me'. Best game that killed my 360 in 2011.

Assassin's Creed 2 and that other one: Fixes almost all my problems with AC1; a decent main character, stuff to actually DO in the beautifully recreated cities, did not kill my 360 because I got it for PC, and... actually thinking about it the story missions weren't THAT more varied, and possibly had even less to do with assassinating than its predecessor. Still, I can forgive it. It even made large auto-jump platforming sections how is that even possible?

Just copy and paste the above for Brotherhood. After all, that's what Ubisoft did! *BA-DUM TISH*

Uncharted 2: I can certainly see why people liked this game- it exudes polish. As far as the cinematic gaming trend goes, it's one of the few examples that reaches its target and actually feels like an interactive movie. However, it came at a cost. The game is very bad at even providing the illusion of freedom- a bit early in the game has you die from a drop that won't kill you elsewhere in the game simply because it involves you straying off the One True Path(tm). I also don't like third person shooters much, which is a pity as that's 95% of the gameplay. The fact I still sorta enjoyed it does Naughty Dog credit, but I don't think I'd buy 3 unless I saw it for fairly cheap in a bargain bin in a year's time or something. Best game I played with Nolan North las- okay no that's probably not true.

That's all I can remember right now so hooray

caveat: apart from all the games I've forgotten.
caveat secundus: these reviews will all be bad

***SPOILERS MAYBE***
Radiant Historia:
Heard it was 'revolutionary'. What I actually played was a game with an initially intriguing and eventually repetitive battle system (also known as a 'JRPG'). On the other hand, the time travel mechanic made obsessively collecting bad endings painless, it didn't have random encounters and I didn't want to punch the main character in the face. So if you really need to play a jRPG, this is better than a knife to the groin.

Skyrim: I'm not sure why I bought this after despising Oblivion and not really getting into Fallout 3, but I guess I'm glad that I did? The main thing it does right over the two aforementioned games is the world- 'snow covered tundra with steam-powered ruins' is a lot more interesting to me than 'generic European forest' and' post-apocalyptic wasteland'. The writing's still pretty bad at times (such as the thieves' guild quest line) and you can still play a game of voice actor bingo ('yep that's three NPCs voiced by the loony tunes guy') but the exploration and dungeon-crawling aspects just about make up for it. If you want to play a fantasy game where you shout at dragons this is the number 1 choice until Warcraft Adventures' beta gets leaked.

Twilight Princess: Everyone whose tastes I trusted said 'don't play this game', so I dunno why after 5 years or whatever I decided to try it. It was a very bad idea- trying to solve OoT's barren Hyrule Field by tripling it in size but not actually adding anything interesting was not the best idea, and side quests were few in number, which is kind of the reason I play Zelda games. Dungeons are annoying slogs that get in the way of rolling into suspicious looking trees and giving valuable documents to magical hands that live in the toilet. The mansion dungeon was okay I guess? I can't even say this is the best game where you ride a horse over barren landscapes I played last year.

Skyward Sword: Makes a packed, more interesting overworld... then adds a meta-overworld with lots of useless flying. Right then. Motion controlled shooting pretty good, but I can't help feeling the sword combat could be replicated with a right analog stick and not lose much. Still prefer it to TP, as the painting look makes looking around more tolerable than a GC-era attempt at brown realism. Also has a town with sidequests in so... good. If you want to buy a zelda game that's on the Wii this beats out TP and probably Link's Crossbow Training.

Ocarina of Time 3DS: Christ on a bike, did I really play 3 zelda games last year? WHY.

Metal Gear Solid 4: I don't think I could add any new criticism that hasn't been rehashed more times than there are cutscenes in MGS4. Okay, no, that didn't work. Something about forgetting the gameplay? No, too late, the moment's gone.
Interestingly, it had one of the better uses of 'cutscenes' I've seen in a game- by showing footage on the top half of the screen while you played in the bottom. It's frustrating to know, from that and Act 1 and 2's gameplay, that Kojima can make a great game, he just chooses not to. Something, something, ONE MOVIE FROM FIVE YEARS AGO GET THIS ONE!!!!

Red Dead Redemption: Technically didn't finish this till last week but whatever. Revitalized my interest in GTA-like games, had a decent ending, and more types of horses than anyone could possibly need. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it, though it does drag a lot in the middle- and the pacing is wonky all the way through. It is, after all, a GTA clone. If you want to play one game where cougars mass murder your steeds this is the A+ choice.
