VGMusic of the Day 702: Final Fantasy Tactics - A Chapel


A short song, but very lovely. I don't know exactly what about this song interests me so much. Maybe it's the special timbre of the synthesized/sample instruments or the special reverb and mixing they used. Or it could be as simple as the melody. Whatever the case, it's one of many great tracks from a fantastic album!

VGMusic of the Day 695: DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu Black Label - Vertigo (Stage 5)


This one had to grow one me, but now it's probably one of my favorite VGM tracks, mostly due to the timbre of the instrumentation. Manabu Namiki always seems to come up with something awesome every so often.

The website is stripping hd=1 from the end of my links, and thus I accidentally added three links while trying to put in the "right" link. This needs to be fixed. We want that hd=1 in there.

VGMusic of the Day 688: Super Bonk - Shoot the Smiley!


This is a great song, but horribly underutilized. It sounds like it could be an airship theme for a Final Fantasy game, but is actually used as a mini-game theme in Super Bonk. Well, just enjoy this little diamond in the rough by a trio of composers of whom you may have never heard!

"Twilight Space" is another excellent track. But personally, I think that one and "Smiley" stand out high above the rest. None of the other tracks really come close.

Also, it seems like YouTube's sh itty playlist editor is working now, so I've tidied up playlist 4. If anyone needs to edit the playlist, make sure to hit the save button in the top-right of the page. I may have missed it last time I tried to use the damn thing.

VGMusic of the Day 681: Idinaloq - Stage 3


I somehow got wind of this music, even though I've never been able to get this game to run properly. The Last Boss 1 music is also good, but I think Stage 3 is my favorite track. The music originally came as MIDI files, but an MP3 version has been made from it for this video. Anyway, enjoy!

Yeah converting midis is kind of a pain. Especially because you need to choose a soundfont that works good which each one. I think I used to have a program that would help with this, but I don't remember what it was called.

In fact, the only way to get a truly "accurate" recording is to use the same soundfont as the person who wrote it, which can be a pain, if possible at all.

Also, for grabbing URLs from videos in YouTube, the easiest way is to click the "Share" button below the video, then click the "Options" link and check the "HD link" and (optionally) "long link" options. After that, click in the text box with the link and copy it.

Ed, ""DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu" and "DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu Black Label" are two different versions of the same game. However, they have completely different soundtracks.

VGMusic of the Day 674: DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu - That Battle Was Just "To Keep That Future Alive" (Stage 5)


Never played any of the games in this series, but that doesn't hinder my appreciation for the music one bit. This is a very lovely trance-like piece with a sorrowful piano melody and some uplifting, energetic synths. The piano portion itself is actually a variation on a theme from Stage 1, which is also good, though I much prefer this Stage 5 track. I could continue to gush and wax nostalgic for Namiki's music, but I'll save that for another day.

VGMusic of the Day 667: Guilty Gear X (NAOMI Arcade) - Still In The Dark


Evil may finally be conquered, but I have one final track to round out the week, unofficially. Think of it as a "bonus track"... Mostly done because Zato-1 (technically Eddie) just looks so cool, though wicked at the same time. This is probably my favorite song in the entire Guilty Gear franchise. I went with the original arcade version because even though the guitars are totally fake, I like this arrangement of the song better than the Dreamcast version. It's got these nice string sections that really give it a strong feeling of harmony. Also, we haven't had a track from this installment since nearly the very beginning of VGMotD!

I was actually looking forward to something from My Little Pony, but fitting the theme works good too!

Independence Day happens every year, but we only get one shot at day #666, so we have to make it count!

Also, feature request:

Since people (mostly me) stick in future tracks, sometimes it's hard to keep track of the current day's track. Is it possible to highlight the row of the current day and/or the previous day so it's easier to see? (Previous day might be good since sometimes the song isn't put up there until later that day.)

If I have a song title in quotes, it saves and displays fine, but when reading the data back to fill in the editable textboxes, it deletes everything starting from the first quote.

For example:

(Evil) VGMusic of the Day 660: Wild Arms 4 - Manifestation From Hell


I'm kicking off Evil music theme week! During this week, we'll post something that either sounds evil (e.g. Silent Hill), has something evil in the game/track title (e.g. Hell, Evil, Demon), or is just generally horror themed. Expect to hear some spine-tingling compositions, capped off with whatever Ed has in store for us at the end.

This track is from Wild Arms 4, which is one of my favorite game music albums. I've never played the game, but it looks pretty cool and I love the music, so I'll have to get around to it one of these days.

But I do have a note for you guys on track 660. Ed, if you could help coordinate this, I'd much appreciate it!

Haha! Yeah, I knew I'd have to choose a particular Robot Master, and the one with arguably the best track.

VGMusic of the Day 653: Mega Man 3 - Stage Select + Game Start


Since the Stage Select & Game Start tracks are super short and naturally go together, I decided to combine them for this video (I used the OST versions). Actually I chose the Stage Select theme because it reminded me of a part of Keff McCulloch's Doctor Who composition "Burton's Escape" ( Good tracks all around!

Ed, I believe Neverland Tundra was my nom for SotW. I'm actually recycling a lot of those for VGMotD (same for this week), but breaking it up every so often with something new or different (probably next week).

Here's a random track from my childhood. As a kid, I used to record game music on cassette tape, and this song was one of the chosen. It's pretty cool, but I think I like it mostly for nostalgia.

VGMusic of the Day 632: Mario Power Tennis - Tournament 2nd Match


This is yet another instance of nominating an original track to represent a preferred arrange version. Mario Sports CD...The Best (http://vgmdb.net/album/509) from the Nintendo Dream Vol. 123 features Sakuraba's own arrangements of his compositions for the GameCube games Mario Power Tennis and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. My choice is arranged on this album along with another track as "Tournament - 1st & 2nd Match". So, if you have a means to check it out, I recommend it! =}

My favorite track from my favorite Mario soundtrack. Mahito Yokota is the best thing that's happened to Mario music, at least since Mario 64. Several great tracks in the game.

My rationale for choosing this track is mostly based on the version from the arrange album "METAL BLACK -The First-". It's a great album. VGMusic of the Day 611: Unreal - Hub 4 (Action)


I always enjoy Michiel van den Bos's work. Here's one his older pieces from Unreal; one of several tracks that did not appear on the soundtrack album releases. It's a little repetitive, but I enjoy the upbeat feel and the use of diminished scale to provide a sinister soundscape.

Copeland composed all three of the PS1 Spyro games, and possibly more in the series.

I know I already posted a track from original PS1 Spyro trilogy back in January, but here's another. Check out the sick bass guitar in this track by Stewart Copeland of "The Police".

The comments I post here are just small personal notes. I don't think they have anything to do the music itself, so there's not much need to post it in the YouTube descriptions. Maybe I could post it there as a comment instead.

This track hails from the very first Mr. Driller game, as composed by Go Shiina. He does a great job with all of the music in the series. This one might not be as grand or flourishy sounding as the other tracks, but I consider it a classic.

Another track from one of my favorite SNES soundtracks, Iwatsuki's The Ninja Warriors Again (known simply as "Ninja Warriors" in North America, and titled "Ninja Warriors: The New Generation" in Europe).

VGMusic of the Day 582: Escape Goat - Machinery


Here's a rarity, a game I discovered by meeting the creator/composer (Ian Stocker) in person. Ian's been writing music in the tracker/demo scene for around ten years, and only in the last few years has he started creating his own games. Escape Goat is a cool little game, and only $1 on Xbox Live Indie Games. Also, the soundtrack (a "name your price" offering) is particularly groovy, with several good tracks (http://magicaltimebean.bandcamp.com/album/escape-goat-original-soundtrack). The photos at the end of the video show a little creation by Ian when he stopped by my college for CogsCon. Ian, You rock!
