There would be an existential crisis for those who fervently believed in God, resulting in mass suicides and depression. Some religious institutions would cease to exist, but others would reinvent themselves. (For example, the Biblical stories could be treated as allegories through which to define a secular system of beliefs.) Some would keep traditions alive for the sake of them.
Gradually the old religious institutions would die or morph into unrecognizable forms. People would still find higher purposes to argue about and go to war over. I'm not one of those atheists who thinks that the end of religion will make the world into a shiny happy place. However, do I think the end of religion would be a net positive? Yes. It is my hope that the new things we would find to argue about would be more substantial and would therefore progress the intellectual evolution of mankind. -- Official Queen ***** of the Universe! |

That was fantastic! I figured Gus had to go, but god damn, what a way to go! That has to be one of the best death scenes ever! Ironically it was Gus's rarely-shown emotions that caused his death in the end. If he could think clearly about Tio, he would have let Tyrus do the job without him.
I'd been thinking about Walt's role in Brock's poisoning since seeing the last episode. At first I was sure that Jesse was completely off the mark, but the more my brain turned, the more concerned I became that Walt would have done it. The only thing that stopped me from believing, that still isn't cleared up, is how he could manage it. Hence I figured that it was probably just a regular flu, Jesse had forgotten the ricingarette in his last pack, and it was fortuitous coincidence. I'm glad it was Walt because it progresses his downward spiral into evil. Walt has crossed the Moral Event Horizon, with his use of his neighbor as cannon fodder serving as the cherry on top. However, Brock's poisoning + Jane's death = mounting reasons for Jesse to go after Walt in the end. And we still have Mike around to deliver some anti-Walt logic unto Jesse. AND HANK GOD, he is going to piss himself when he finds out the laundromat asploded. How many months until the next season? Hours? Seconds? I don't think BB is the kind of the show that would kill Gus in a season finale... they would save that for episode 502 or 503 or something, like with Tuco. Though I guess having Gus dead would create enough of a cliffhanger in regards to the entire meth operation. Each season HAS ended with a death, so it's likely there will be one, but I don't think it's a main character. I'm gonna put a vote down for a family member... Skyler or Walt jr. or Hank. But what does killing Skyler or Walt Jr. accomplish aside from enraging an already homicidally-inclined Walt? And I can't even entertain the idea of killing Hank with his plotline so far from resolution. I have never seen Breaking Bad kill someone without good reason. Killing a family member at this point doesn't move things along. Someone is bound to die in the finale, and story-wise, there is one character whose arc has wrapped up and who is too big of a threat to the main characters to continue living, and that's Gus. His continued existence is a blocking issue for the series. Every other faction in this show is seeking his overthrow: Walt and Jesse, the Cartel, the DEA. So they can either make BB "The Gus Pwning Everyone Show", or they can kill him. I guess it could happen in Season 5, but they already have a lot of ground to cover in just one season. Better to just do it and leave the audience guessing over the hiatus as to what will happen with all the hydra heads chopped off the meth business. But more importantly, some ridiculous **** always falls into their laps and they luck out. Exactly! :D But what I love about Breaking Bad is that they always make it believable for the characters, no deus ex machina crap. I'm thinking Saul will be the end of him I figure that Walt's eventual comeuppance will involve every character in the series minus the baby, but the main players will be Hank (that showdown has been brewing for seasons) and Jesse (who has arguably been screwed by Walt more than anyone else). -- Official Queen ***** of the Universe! |

Skyler is unlikable because she is a control freak. Remember when Walt bought Jr. the car? Don't kid yourself that she was upset because the "cover story" might be blown; parents buy kids stupid stuff they can't afford all the time. No -- she was pissed that Walt bought the car without her approval, her "research", her ultimate decision. She wants Walt and Jr. right under her motherly thumb. Reason number two is her naivety about what's going on with Walt. The audience knows way more about Walt's situation than she does. Hence the ridiculous things she can say and do that make his life harder, though totally reasonable with her limited knowledge, wear on our patience. -- Official Queen ***** of the Universe! |

I have complete faith in this show to give Gus a worthy send-off. Beneke got exactly the death his character deserved, and so will Gus.
How many episodes should it take to kill someone? Gus's fate has been sealed since he committed the cardinal sin (on this show) of Threatening Walt's Family in 4x11. The clock has been ticking on him since then, and when better than the finale to give Gus a spectacular dramatic sendoff and kick Season 5 into a dramatic power-vacuum tailspin? -- Official Queen ***** of the Universe! |

I think that Gus will be dead by the end of the finale. Given that the episode title is "Face Off", I think they might do something cute with that, like melt his face with acid. Then next season will be Hank vs Walt and Jesse, or possibly Hank vs Walt vs Jesse if it turns out that Walt poisoned Brock. And who knows where Mike will fit in, not to mention the remnants of the Cartel and Gus's business. I already can't wait for Season 5. Best show EVER.
