The first part of this movie plays out like a bad ripoff of 'The Little Mermaid' (girl likes guy from other world, daddy doesn't like that idea, tells her to stay away, she doesn't listen). Only, this time around, all the characters are boring and lame, simply one of the worst collection of main characters ever made by Disney. The shortcomings are especially pronounced when compared with the characters of the other Renaissance movies.
In addition, this movie is obsessed with political correctness to an absurd level, and it drags down the movie terribly (for example, all the europeans are a bunch of violent, greedy morons who only think of killing 'filthy savages' and tearing up the countryside in the search of non-existent gold).
It's a shame there is so much fail here, because there is some really great artistry in the backgrounds and animation, and the songs are awesome (especially colors of the wind).


Best Character: Meeko

Meeko's scenes were the only parts of the movie I enjoyed other then the songs. He's a great sidekick, and adds some much needed personality to a movie where most of the characters have just about none.


Worst Character: Governor Ratcliffe

A terrible, horrible villain. Ratcliffe is a one-dimensional idiot who, despite having an educated upbringing, thinks that there will be like 24-karat gold bars sticking out of the ground all over the New World. Hmm, good luck with that.

Bambi

This movie was very difficult to rank, as it is completely different than any other Disney film. Whereas most Disney movies focus on either story or humor (or a combination of both), Bambi instead focuses on the emotions of the audience. Whether it be the cuteness of baby animals, the fear and sadness felt by Bambi at the loss of his mother, or the horrifying menace of 'Man', few movies can match the emotional immersion of Bambi. All the songs are amazing, and help add to the incredible mood of the movie.
Bambi is the crown jewel of the classic era, and there is unlikely to ever be another movie quite like it.


Best Character: Thumper

Frequently thought of as the stereotypical 'cute animal' character, and for good reason. Thumper is simply adorable. Whenever he appears in a scene, he pretty much steals it completely.


Worst Character: Bambi's Mother

She's simply dull and uninteresting, the whole extent of her character is 'lol, I'm a mother', she doesn't even have a real name. Even in the scene where she dies, most of the sadness comes from concern for poor Bambi, rather then actually caring about what just happened to Mommy.

I loved how they made such an effort to make this look like the old Disney movies of the 60s and 70s (which I like more than most people do, I think). The songs were decent, but not as good as the ones in Princess and the Frog or Tangled.
One gripe I have with the movie is that they made all the characters kinda too 'stupid', even the ones that traditionally had a bit more intelligence such as Owl, Rabbit, and Kanga.

The Princess and the Frog

After Disney pissed away the better part of the decade creating heaps of garbage, we finally get a delightful return to all the things that made that made the Disney Renaissance great. Incredible characters, beautiful animation, it's all there.The one area that this movie fails to reach the level of the early Renaissance movies is in the songs, which sadly, are not really anything special.
Another thing of note about this movie is the shocking character death at the end. Most real, permanent deaths in Disney movies are simply deus ex machina to move the plot forward and generally involve bumping off the main character's parents (who have an incredibly high mortality rate in Disney movies, btw). This time, however, the death is just for sadness, and more importantly, it helps dispel the aura of invincibility that generally surrounds the good guys in Disney movies. Now when I see a future Disney movie, I will actually feel concerned when he heroes are in danger, instead of just 'lol, they're the good guys, they'll be alright'.


Best Character: Naveen

One of the funniest Disney characters in recent memory, womanizing slacker Naveen serves as the perfect foil to the practical Tiana, and has most of the funny lines in the movie. Remember, it's not slime, it's mucus!


Worst Character: Lawrence

He's just simply boring, ordinary, and seems completely out of place in the whole feel of the film.The one black mark on the character design in this movie.

Fantasia 2000

A very hit and miss Fantasia sequel that, with two major exceptions, fails to live up to the original.


'Beethoven's 5th Symphony'

A scene featuring abstract butterfly-like creatures. The big attraction here is the music, with the very well known 'dun-dun-dun-DUNNNN' beginning.


'Pines of Rome'

Aka the 'flying whale' scene. A fairly good segment, certainly one of the most original.


'Rhapsody in Blue'

The second best segment here, one of only two that make this film worth watching. The scene is drawn in a retro style, and follows four different characters who are unhappy with their current lot in life, and ends with them all having their dreams fulfilled.


'The Steadfast Tin Soldier'

This is the big turd of the movie. Trashy CGI animation that is some of the worst ever done in a feature film has no business sullying the good name of Fantasia.


'The Carnival of the Animals'

Flamingos with yo-yos. You would think this would be automatically awesome, but sadly, this remains a quite mediocre segment.


'Pomp and Circumstance'

Aka 'Noah's Apprentice'. Donald helps Noah load his ark, and hilarity ensues. Sort of a homage to classic Donald Duck cartoons.


'Firebird Suite'

The original Fantasia saved the best segment for last, and 2000 is no different, as it finishes with a stunning scene where an anime-ish nature sprite clashes with a volcanic firebird spirit. This scene simply has the most beautiful animation you will ever see anywhere.

1 - 7.5/10 A absolutely beautiful pic ruined by a hideous photoshop lens flare.
2 - 6.5/10 Has kind of a neat feel to it, but can't match the technical level of the other two pics.
3 - 7.5/10 It's well drawn, but it's mostly just random characters thrown together, and seems a bit cluttered.
