I just always use the main character anyway. Considering how often they get forced into solo fights, might as well! And they usually have the most fun playstyle and 'feel right' considering the story.

Abyss' battle system felt slow and clunky. There's not really much I liked about Abyss at all, in general.

One thing I love about the books that no one seems to mention was how they took a seemingly one sided villain from book 1 and then showed us the other side in book 3. In particular they showed a flashback from one character's POV in book 1, then from the other character's in book 3. It was brilliant. I'm actually enjoying the story more than other Tales games, but that's mostly a 'by default' thing. ToS' story can get really silly, Vesperia barely has a story, and Abyss' story is abysmal. Graces' just seems more grounded in general.

is the battle system different? Yeah. The entire battle perspective has been changed - instead of running right/left you mostly run forward/back. You can do very quick sidesteps that are necessary to dodge most attacks. TP is gone entirely and has been replaced by a quickly regenerating meter that you use to do combos. There's some other stuff too but it has a very different feel from other Tales games. is the story better than the stereotypical anime fare the games I've played in the tales series are? So far there's been less anime cliche nonsense but not a lot less. If you don't have a stomach for that stuff it probably still won't go well. -- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |

A certain boss on Hard wiped out my entire party in one attack from full health. We were bunched together and he used a really-powerful-but-small-range spell right at the center of us.

What difficulty is everyone playing this on? I find that Hard (with Sophie and Cheria set as healslaves) is the way to go. Otherwise enemies die too fast and I can't do crazy combos. -- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |
