Lopen posted... Also I will deny Cloud and Sephiroth are weakening. Right here. Their performance in this contest means nothing-- rivalries in this contest that only have one or two games behind them have done poorly all around.
Nintendo looks stronger in this contest because they're a company that thrives on feeding you the same crap over and over, and thus have rivalries that show up in many many games,
Red/Blue is only in one game. Referenced in another, but, uh...

I'd rather have fun NOW than worry about some later contest that may or may not happen, and could have any number of factors pop up between now and then that may change things.

I think its because I work with so many Eagles fans, I'd rather us all be miserable than just me. That would really suck. Also because it would mean ESPN was right to be like EAGLES ARE STILL IN IT every week and I cannot condone encouraging that behavior.
You sound like a terrible human being.

I find "Hey, Pokemon is getting progressively stronger. Is it the rivalry factor, will it transfer over to the games, etc. etc.?" more interesting than "Zelda > FF7 whoooo," personally, regardless of Pokemon being Nintendo or not.
But apparently I'm in the minority, so... Cool.

Did we seriously go from complaining about how predictable contests are and how Link always wins... To then complaining when Cloud loses to somebody that isn't Link.
Really.
Screw this "lol nintendomination" crap. That's just being silly.
"Argh this contest is so predictable it sucks! Hey, wait, something that almost never happens happened. Argh this is so awful!"

ZFS posted... Sony shipped 3 million worldwide, it sold 700k in the U.S.
In any case, Skyrim already thrashed Skyward Sword in sales in North America and Europe, so there's not much room for debate there. It's not an important point there, anyway, just one to reinforce that it's big.
Oh, I wasn't saying anything about SS. I was just saying that using the figure for shipped isn't as effective, usually..

ZFS posted... Also, yeah, I doubt SS beats Skyrim regardless. People love Skyrim, reviewers love Skyrim, it shipped something like 10 million copies already, it's on the PS3 and 360 and PC, it's already beat Skyward Sword twice. Between the two, I'd want SS to win, but there's not one reason for that result to flip.
Didn't Uncharted 3 like, not even sell 1/4th of what it shipped when Sony was going all "Hells yeah we shipped 3 mil!"

It pounded (the unbeatable unstoppable stop running Contests forever) Zelda in that anticipation poll, got fantastic reviews, sold incredibly well, and has been the #1/2/3 FAQ on the site ever since day one. Despite, again, having to compete with a new Zelda game that sold more copies in the first week than any Zelda game in the past.
I don't really get the problem. Like, why are people acting like a contest, even if predictable, is somehow physically hurting them so much that they have to see it go? I mean, I'm completely lost when I see thundersheep post about how the contest makes this board go to s***, and then see tranny post that there have been like, no new users this time around to even whine all that much. I'd rather see if a new idea for a contest can make them fun again, even if it fails, over "DO YOU HAVE A WII YET?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

Isn't it more or less implied that there was no champion/Lance was the "champion," and that Blue was the first one to beat him? At the point where RBY falls, chronologically, Lance is the best trainer before Red/Blue, so it's fully believable he had just never been beaten since the Elite Four's creation.

Yeah, I should clarify. I like Rey himself. I dislike WWE Formula Rey, because his is one of the absolute worst. He can put on some fantastic matches... But then he also falls into some of the worst habits ever. Which is probably WWE's fault and not his, but... Eh. I agree with Lopen on this.

I definitely agree that themes are more interchangeable now than in the past, but I still don't think that necessarily means they're REALLY interchangeable. I still couldn't see Miz's fitting anybody else there now nearly as well. But gimmicks overall are a lot closer than they used to be.
And thanks for reminding me that Gangrel's theme was awesome.
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://img.imgcake.com/stevenashgifpu.gif
That said, yeah, it seems like I just value lyrics more. Where you may hear generic cocky song, I value the character the lyrics are painting, which is Miz perfectly moreso than anyone else in WWE currently.
Didn't mean to sound like a dick, though.
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://img.imgcake.com/stevenashgifpu.gif
But yeah I don't think we will. You value lyrics a lot more highly than I do. I just basically see "out with the old in with the new in a brazen way" when it comes to Miz's theme, and that fits with all of those to some extent. I certainly don't see his theme as needing to be played as a heel, either-- seems alignment neutral to me! It sounds more like a face theme than Ted Dibiase's current theme, even!
It's talking about how you better pray, you have no future, and your dreams are screwed because of him. And how even if you try to run or beg for mercy, he's still gonna end you. It's got a quite heelish/violent implication to the lyrics. >_>
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://img.imgcake.com/stevenashgifpu.gif
I say without exaggeration that Miz right now could fit:
Dolph Ziggler Alex Riley Heath Slater Ted Dibiase Jack Swagger David Otunga (before the lawyer thing, anyway-- though his theme right now doesn't really fit any better than this one)
Okay, now the debate really is over because that's just really, really stupid. The lyrics of the theme convey the thought of forcibly taking what he wants, getting rid of the old/replacing it with the new, and not really giving a damn about anybody but himself. None of those you named actually fit that. Like, at all.
For one, the theme is heel by the nature of the lyrics, so get rid of Riley and Dibiase.
Ziggler doesn't fit because he's a showoff/goof, which doesn't fit the lyrics at all.
Swagger's the same.
Slater... Well, who knows what fits Slater right now because he has zero character since he's a jobber now.
And Otunga? Really?
I can't debate this with you anymore because we're clearly never going to agree, and I can't see the logic you're taking at all.
So vote for Zack.

Lopen posted... I disagree with that. JBL's theme has the wall street bells at the beginning which adds a lot to it-- that and the it feels sorta like... "grand" I guess? It's a cowboy theme but it's got some sorta grandeur to it which is... the gimmick to a T. Doesn't work for any other cowboy gimmick out there nearly as well. Umaga's is far too tribal to fit the Usos cause their whole thing was "we may be Samoan but we're not savages"-- might've fit the old Headshrinkers but I think it was too intense for them-- those guys were kinda more laid back savages if that makes sense.
WGTT same sorta thing-- you can't give this to the Steiners and have it fit nearly as well because the first 10 seconds or so of the song really makes it feel like it's trying to sell you on "this is the World's Greatest Tag Team" and then the next bit seems more fitting to technicians-- so I guess if you had a pair of technical collegiate athletes billing themselves as the World Greatest Tag Team then it'd work for them.
Victoria's is the only one I can sorta agree with. Thing I guess that theme has going for it is that the theme itself is so unique that it feels like it's unique because the theme itself is more than it's locked into the gimmick (which is also kinda unique-- there are only three sufficiently crazy women I can think of that this theme would come close to working for-- and it works better for Victoria than Mickie James or Daffney). Which also counts imhhho. Also no one on the roster having that gimmick when she had it helps.
MVP his theme was integrated with his entrance that I can't really say it fits other people nearly as well-- might be unfair but yeah. Also the theme itself was unique so the Victoria effect is in play to some extent.
Well, other than the bells, which is no different than adding something like "Awesome" or "Perfection" to the song anywhere, JBL's was based on the Dallas theme, so... >_>
And the Usos outright embrace the Samoan thing now. Hell, it'd fit them now, even as faces. There's not really anything savage about Umaga's theme. It's generic tribal.
WGTT... Again, you're clinging to the first few seconds of the song, after which the most generic thing in the world follows. That's basically suggesting that "Awesome" does in fact make Miz's theme unique, and that's ignoring that the lyrics fit him. WGTT would fit any young team if you take away the first few seconds, and any overly cocky young team even with those few seconds.
And I'd argue both of Victoria's could fit anybody. Her second could have fit a Beth, Natalya... Hell, anybody. And the first... I thought one of those two had a crazy gimmick at one time, but I'm probably wrong. The fact that you named two other people, though, that it'd fit, well... You did the job for me.
And if you're gonna fall on the "Well, it was a unique gimmick in WWE at the time," then... Who can you say with a straight face that you could give Miz's theme to right now? Because if you can't think of anybody, then it fits just as much as any of the ones you claimed do.
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://img.imgcake.com/stevenashgifpu.gif
And by that I'm saying... I get Vik's argument, and understand it to a point. And I see the argument you're trying to make.
But then you listed a bunch of themes that quite literally fit the definition of "Generic, fit anybody in that archetype."
It looks more like you're just listing themes you grew accustomed to, or are confusing "unique theme" with "unique gimmick at the time it existed."
Give heel Usos the Umaga theme and nobody bats an eye. Give JBL's to... Any cowboy gimmick. Victoria's could have just as easily fit Beth or Natalya at one time. Etc. etc.
But the thing is, you're not really going to find very many themes at all these days that you can't do that with. And so using what you posted, Miz's fits him right now just as much as Victoria's fit her or Umaga's fit him. In that... They could be used for anybody that fit the same gimmick, but at the time the gimmick is fairly unique in how it's being pushed compared to others.
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://img.imgcake.com/stevenashgifpu.gif
While I agree on the genericness, I do at least see enough differences to not seem too stale.
Take Miz and Ziggler, since they were mentioned. They're both the "cocky young heel," but they're played differently. Ziggler's a show-off, full of himself to the point where he overhypes his own abilities and doesn't want to accept help, and generally comes off as more of a goof than intense. Miz, on the other hand, is violent, has no problem with using people to get himself ahead... And then betray them when their usefulness has ended, and seems like he generally couldn't care less how he achieves success as long as he does. Like, that's what I was getting at with how his theme fits him. I couldn't see a Ziggler having it at all, even though they fall under the same general archetype.
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://img.imgcake.com/stevenashgifpu.gif
Yeah, I guess. But to be fair, he's THE selfish, cocky young heel they're pushing most as the character. From flipping the logo over to constantly betraying people like R-Truth, they're pushing it so hard with him that it's hard for me to see it working for anybody else right now.
