Treat it like a big joke, and it's hilarious. That's kind of what it was meant to be, anyway.

The purpose of jokes is to spread humor and joy. This has only created a tense situation. Therefore, the purpose of the joke has achieved the opposite effect. There are two possible reasons for this.

1) The joke was poorly played out.
2) The audience is not receptive.

There are remedies, fortunately.

1) Get new/better material.
2) Find a new audience more receptive.

It's very simple, actually. I could be offended, but I choose not to because of two reasons. I don't believe you originally intended this to be insulting (though it seems to be rapidly degenerating to spite). And I don't like to let my religion effect my associations with people.
