Treat it like a big joke, and it's hilarious. That's kind of what it was meant to be, anyway.
The purpose of jokes is to spread humor and joy. This has only created a tense situation. Therefore, the purpose of the joke has achieved the opposite effect. There are two possible reasons for this. 1) The joke was poorly played out. 2) The audience is not receptive.
