Haven't gotten to Dragon Quest, FF7, or Persona 3 and doubt I will by deadline. I usually have the latest WWE game on my list, but this year's is so greedy with its microtransactions that I'd really prefer not giving it a point, thank you.

Celeste 64 is more a proof of concept novelty than a full game, but it was fun & Wikipedia lists it as a game released this year, so... technically a game, just a very short one.

Mork & Mindy was the first time I ever deeply resented a finale, so I'm going with that.

Wikipedia Summary: Kalnik discovers Mork and Mindy in their demolished apartment. Mork clicks the heels of his magic shoes in an effort to escape with Mindy to Rome, but the shoes have been damaged, and Mork and Mindy wind up with prehistoric tribesmen.

To be fair, an unresolved cliffhanger is probably cheating, as it wasn't meant to be a series finale, but... this was uniquely terrible.

Though I suppose if you were still watching after Mork gave birth to Jonathan Winters, you deserved to be disappointed.

Holy fuck, 168 times?!?

Yeah, I've mentioned that I tend to binge music I love until I get tired of it. This isn't even a total outlier; a few years ago I was hyper into Bring Me the Horizon & I think I played "Doomed" about as many times if you were able to combine the counts from the original album version & the Live at Royal Albert Hall one.

I think mine is mostly accurate, but stopped counting at the end of November? There are some songs I've had on an infinite loop for a few days that have definitely gotten more plays than the bottom of this list, but I suppose I just didn't find them in time for them to count.

Also, I wasn't kidding about "Found Out About You" being my most listened song. Played it 168 times apparently.

I have also finished Donkey Kong Land! I'd say I agree with everyone else's takes and experiences, though notably, I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it more than anyone else did. Like... yeah, some of the secret areas are hidden unfairly ; yeah, the game can feel a bit buggy as you die to the camera not following you down to the platform that you know for a fact Is below you ; yeah, stage 3-5 is terrible and ruins almost all the good will the game had built up to that point ; yeah, the bosses are all rather simple & monotonous. But... I dunno. Speaking as someone who never liked DKC, they took a 16-bit title I quite dislike & made an 8-bit title that I had fun with. There were some music tracks I really enjoyed (though, sadly, they were confined to the first two worlds) and it had a reasonable amount of difficulty... not particularly hard since it was easy to stockpile lives, but just challenging enough to create a false sense of accomplishment. It's also short enough to not outstay its welcome & it's reasonably generous with check points and saves, so the frustration is kept to a minimum... just a fun way to kill a few hours.

...And I think I'll revise Ghouls 'n Ghosts up two spots on my list while I'm here. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but seeing it under Genesis Virtua Fighter 2 feels wrong to me this afternoon.

Punch-Out!! (t4p471)
Crystalis (t4p471)
Super Punch-Out!! (t4p480)
Donkey Kong Land (t5p284)
Kirby's Dream Land (t4p426)
Doomsday Warrior (t4p421)
The Immortal (t4p372)
Vice: Project Doom (t4p426)
Ghosts 'n Goblins (t5p61)
Donkey Kong Jr. Math (t4p428)
Super Mario Land (t4p409)
Ghouls 'n Ghosts (t5p212)
Virtua Fighter 2 (t5p180)
Sugoi Hebereke (t4p417)
Alleyway (t4p428)

15 games down. Not too bad since I planned on leaving after The Immortal.

EDIT: Enjoyed Land enough to look back at DKC... played through the first boss fight. I'm still not a fan, but it's not bad. Not sure why they don't offer infinite lives since you can farm as many as you want from stage 1 anyway. Might see if I can finish it just for DKL comparisons.

Neat! I figured it had to be a mythological reference, but I don't think I ever heard of him (or Deimos for that matter) specifically. At the very least, I don't recall knowing there even was a god of fear.

Deleted my first post about this for... reasons. The short summary is that one of Rae's estranged father figures reached out to her & seeing his name again brought back a lot of her trauma. Luce... also has some trauma related to him popping back up. And things are VERY intense right now as a result. Rae & Luce physically cannot respond to him because the emotions are just way too much... I can, but he doesn't really know me and it's way too much pressure.

Also, I may have wished him a happy Thanksgiving and now Luce is furious that I allowed an estranged family member back into their lives... Rae is... not really in a position to have a conversation about this incident.

So... we're not doing great right now. But we're all physically fine and we'll figure something out? ...By which I mean, I'll figure it out since this is my fault and I understand why they can't talk to him themselves. And I know no one can really help as this is a very... unique situation, I just... needed to say something somewhere.

Koa and the Pirates of Mara - Finish Line: Not the nomination's fault, but I hate how difficult YouTube is with timestamps... the embedded versions never work and it also doesn't work for me just opening it in a new tab, I have to open it and switch to desktop mode. Which isn't that much effort, but why are they making it hard for me to click a video in the first place? Either way, the song isn't for me. It's nothing I mind, but... I dunno. I should be really digging the very childish, almost preschool cartoon vibes from the song, but it's brand of happiness just isn't doing anything for me. It's another of those "this is fine" songs.

NiGHTS Into Dreams... - Peaceful Moment: I'm actually very pleased this song made it as far into the list as it actually did. I'd kinda regretted nominating it at all and knew it wasn't going to make it far, so anything besides dead last was going to be considered a success in my book. Either way, I'd been going through a lot of things when nominations went up, and relaxing songs like this one were really helping to keep me going. No matter how bad things were, this song offered a moment of tranquility that helped me recenter myself. For a few days, this was probably my favorite song of all time. ...Now that I'm doing a bit better, I don't *need* this song and it's dropped back down a lot. I mean, I'll always love it and I have a lot of nostalgia for NiGHTS that this obviously plays into, but I'd have never considered nominating it at any point other than the one specific week noms went up.

Super Mario Bros 3 - End Credits: A very old-timey farewell song. I have the distinct vibe of being on a sinking ship and this being the somewhat ironic tune that welcomes us to a watery grave.

Alan Wake 2 - This Road (The Dark Chamber): The song starts as very sultry lounge music, smokey and intoxicating in an intriguing way. Then around the halfway point, the instruments start doing something I really enjoy. It's very... very... "that thing I like", my vocabulary seems to be failing me this morning. Sadly, it's a very different type of vibe to the opening of the song and I don't know that the blend of two things I enjoy really worked out here, but I definitely really like both halves of the song.

Resident Evil 4 (2023) - Big Anger on the Lake ~ Del Lago: Ehh... I mean... I like oppressive, atmospheric songs... or at least, I thought I did before this ranking... good vibes, but it's not provoking a strong enough emotional reaction from me.

TMNT 3: Manhattan Project - Stage 3: Ehh... I mean... I like classic NES chiptunes... or at least, I thought I did before this ranking... I'm afraid this one just doesn't leave an impression on me.

Perfect Dark - Carrington Villa: Hostage One: I want to like this song more than I do. I like oppressive soundscapes, but I don't feel particularly oppressed by it. I like that it feels like a tense stealth mission, but it never feels tense or stealth enough to let me embark on any wild fantasies. I like music that I can meditate to, but it's just a little too... something-or-other for it to work on a meditation playlist. It's like it's very close to being three different things that I love, but it never manages to nail any of them well enough for me to get into it. I don't mind the song, but I'm a little disappointed.

Batman: Arkham City - A Rose For Respect: If this were longer, it might be up there as one of my favorites in the topic. As is, I like it--possibly even really like it--this there's not enough time for me to get everything I need. I love the instruments and I really love the emotional vibes it's going for, but the song ends before I can get properly sad. There's just no room to reflect on things or think much at all, which is really unfortunate because it drags the song down from "I absolutely love this" to "I like this quite a bit". It'd probably still get 3 points from me at most blocks, but it could have been so much more.

Stray - Rooftops: A bit of a rough track due to its length. The opening feels like slinking my way through an open market, ignoring all the bustle and commotion in search of a specific target (person or item, I cannot say) ; then there's a very brief switch to.... something shortly after the two minute mark, the twinkling sounds are very inviting but the song abandons them almost immediately which is where the track starts to fall apart. I was enjoying a fantasy, it started to introduce a new fantasy and then it basically just stops. This section of the song is so quiet and minimalistic that I can only describe it as "waiting in a room that doesn't even have proper waiting room music" in it, which is practically bottom of the barrel in terms of musical fantasies. And while the song does try to do some other things starting around 5 minutes in, I've already become so disillusioned with the song that it's too late... also it kinda ditches those vibes just as quickly as it did the mysterious twinkling. And I actively dislike the more industrial vibes the song chooses to go out on, so while the song opens fairly strongly, the negatives way overshadow the positive opening experience.

Dynamix - Perpetual: This is exactly the type of cheesy rock theme that I love. Not quite one of my absolute favorites of the topic, but I feel like it would have gotten at least 4 points in the majority of blocks I ranked... though there were at least two really stacked blocks where it might have struggled a bit. Either way, I love this and perhaps ironically agree that it's better than Sapphire's Boss Theme, but I'll talk more about that nom of mine when it falls.

Theresa - benign spirit of the autoclave: I always think that I don't like this song because all I ever remember is the slow, rather plodding opening that never feels dark or oppressive enough for my tastes... then the song picks up and it's like 'oh yeah, I do like this one!'. And like most songs at the "I like this" tier, I don't really feel inspired to say more than that.

Blue Reflection: Sun - Soul on Fire: Seeing the comparisons to Persona and Linkin Park got my hopes up. I'm just going to believe that my dislike of the song is because I expected too much from it. It's fine, but... well, it's certainly not the worst RPG battle theme that got nominated and it's trying something different so... it's fine, it's fine.

Super Smash Bros. Melee - Mach Rider: No. ...I'm sorry, but I really very strongly and completely dislike this sound to a point that the song is almost painful to listen to. It's almost carnival like, but in the worst possible way I could mean that and one minute into the song, I really need this to be over. I couldn't decide if I was looking forward to this: I almost never like Smash remixes, but I really wanted to hear a Mach Rider remix... should have trusted my "if it's Smash, I'm just not going to like it" instincts. ...Now I almost want to do a bizarre "Smash VS RPG Battle" music ranking just to see which category of VGM is my true nemesis...

Timesplitters 2 - Astro Lander: I absolutely love buzzing sounds like those that open the song, but it never really offers me anything I'm into other than computerized buzzing... it's a nice song, but "slowly marching through a computerized dystopia" isn't exactly my favorite environment to imagine & as Chaos-Zero said, it kinda becomes keygen music at the end. Which is fine! I'd probably say I like this, but for something with such a strong opening that feels like a far more subdued reaction than I was expecting.

The Legend of Heroes III "White Witch" - Badatt: ...Why is the intro giving me feelings of a Wizard of Oz RPG that's trying too hard to be epic vibes? It's very "battle theme for aa boss fight on the yellow brick road" and I'm more than a little baffled by that. Either way, it's a fun little bop. Not something I rave about, but it's enjoyable and inspired some unique thoughts, so I'm cool with it. I don't even want to guess how many points that would be worth in practice, but it's cool.

The Sleepwalk - Return to Within, to Out...: I don't get this song and I'm just going to choose to be happy that I never had to score it & that Johnbobb enjoyed it. He found a song he really dug and I avoided having to think about it, so that's a win-win & I'm just going to move along.

Donkey Kong Land progress: Finished the first two worlds, and the first four stages of the third world, with all secret areas found. I did use a guide at three points so far: Even with Suprak's hint about that one bonus room in World 1, I still couldn't find it. I swear I went through that level five times and tried staying at the bottom of each rope, but I could never get the camera to show where that one was. It's probable I was just doing something wrong though.

I also couldn't figure out how to damage the second boss. It's silly, but I somehow never thought of making it attack the only other object in the room. I spent way too many lives bumping into that clam from every angle during every part of its animation & then spent way too long dodging in case it was a timed survival mission or something would eventually happen.

3-4 had another bonus room I couldn't figure out, but since it required me to jump down a pit, I don't feel as bad about not figuring that one out.

So, game is fun! It's not a favorite, but I'm enjoying my time with it. I really like the soundtrack; I think I'm naturally drawn towards the Game Boy's sound for reasons I'm not entirely sure of, but there are definitely some good tunes here. Particularly the theme for the first world's snow levels and I'm sure there was something in the second world, though I've already forgotten what it was or where it played... but I really liked it! What I find interesting is that I've never cared for the DKC series in the slightest, so I was not expecting to enjoy this... but something about the talent in trying to turn an SNES game into a Game Boy game makes it incredibly charming and the soundtrack is so good that I'm actually having a really good time here.

Okay, so we're officially done with the ninth write up! But Rae needs a little time off afterwards. She made some real emotional breakthroughs and we're all very proud of her, but she kinda wants to be non-verbal and rest for a few days. Which works since Thursday was our scheduled day off anyway, but I can't promise she'll be up to talking again on Friday and it'd be really bad to try to force her before she's ready.

Today was very stressful and draining for unrelated reasons I don't want to get into. But we're all fine! I'm just... a little emotionally worn down myself.

Also, Luce woke up for the first time in months! We've talked a lot today, but she's being difficult and doesn't really want to make a public appearance... or bother logging into her account. I keep telling her she needs to make more of an effort to maintain friendships, but she's trying to insist that we just have a quiet family night together & that she'll try to talk to people later. And... well, a quiet night to rest does seem to be something we all need... so I'm not going to force her out of her room tonight. But I *will* give her more lectures on how important it is that she at least try to make an effort during the times that she's here and hopefully she'll be able to make an appearance at some point.

I am working on Donkey Kong Land. Haven't found all the secrets in the first world, but I think I'm at the boss fight. Not sure if I'll go back to find things or just work on trying to clear the game.

I was having trouble with DKL and got four game overs already, but I'm starting to get the hang of the minigame where you turn coins into lives and can earn them pretty easily now, so that may make the rest of the game a bit smoother.

Yay enthusiasm! We're almost up to nine characters, as the ninth writeup kinda... got away from us and is rather long. We've been typing for three hours and still have more to do after we finish our conversations about some things.

Also, there may be some slight delays as I'm working on Donkey Kong Land since the NSO topic is doing a group playthrough. I like being included in things and Rae is actually letting me play what I want to be part of group projects... so that's nice. But taking time from this project to work on that may cause some slight delays here and there.

How does it rank that far below the first one?

I kinda like Ghosts 'n Goblins. It's not a good game, but it's almost charming in its own weird way. Trying to figure out how to avoid the glitches was almost puzzle like & I found myself laughing at the game rather than actually frustrated. Also, I quickly found the knife/dagger to be the best weapon, so I didn't go through the whole "my weapon can't damage this boss" issue--dagger gets you through everything except the final boss who needs the shield/cross.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts felt far more actively frustrating, while still buggy. Some of the hitboxes are misaligned, like with the bouncing turtles in stage 2; the front of the turtles have no hitbox, so sometimes the optimal move is to let them bounce harmlessly through you. I had an enemy turn into a different enemy at one point: a flying insect was at the bottom of the screen & following along with me. When we passed the checkpoint, it turned into a glitchy plant monster--since there were no insects in this part of the stage, it loaded the graphics of a different monster. Which was harmless and kinda funny, but I feel it made the game seem low budget & I have higher expectations for a 16-bit title. I didn't care for the way treasure chests worked, the jumps were still difficult to control & there was more platforming, and the game felt much harder to me without really adding anything enjoyable to make up for the extra pain.

I had fun laughing at the first game; I found very little enjoyable about the second.

I have finished Ghouls 'n Ghosts! Not a completely clean victory as I used save states to pause & resume the game instead of doing it all in one sitting. Played through entirely on Professional difficulty, though I don't think it matters as I'm told the mandatory second playthrough switches to Professional anyway? At least, I think I read that. I strongly disliked the game, but it's playable. Infinite continues is generous and the graphics are good for the era, nice weapon variety (if only it were easier to choose a weapon to enjoy that fact)... it's not bad, I just really don't want to play that again.
