I think there were a couple guys like that. I believe John Sullivan's problem with respect to January 6th was that he was trying to claim he was just recording footage as a journalist, but he was gleefully involving himself in the mayhem as well.

Updates:
  • The SCOTUS oral arguments for Trump's presidential immunity appeal happened on Thursday April 25th. We're now waiting for SCOTUS to make a ruling on it, but it could take until June 25th.
  • Trump is currently on trial in New York for the criminal hush money / election interference case. The trial happens on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and is expected to go for maybe another 5 to 6 weeks.
  • Trump has violated the judge's gag order about 12 times so far. They had a hearing on Tuesday April 23rd to address the 1st 10 or so violations. The judge has scheduled another hearing for Thursday May 2nd to address the remaining 2. The 2nd hearing was originally on Wednesday May 1st, but it got moved. Still waiting on Judge Merchan to make a ruling about the first 10 gag order violations. NY law says it's either a max $1000 fine per violation or jail time. The prosecution asked for fines for the 1st 10, but not sure how the judge will rule.
  • Trump and the NY AG have worked out a deal to accept the $175 million bond fronted by Knight Specialty Insurance in the NY civil fraud trial. We're now waiting on the appeals court to make a ruling.
  • No important events in the Georgia RICO trial or the classified documents case, I don't think.
  • Trump's appeal in the second E. Jean Carroll trial was denied.

Did the judge ever rule on the gag order hearing from Tuesday? There were 10 gag order violations presented at that time and now there's even more. I don't know how much clearer it needs to be that Trump will continue to violate the order until he's punished for it.

No ruling yet. If I had to guess, the judge seems to have made his primary focus to keep the trial moving along, but he may not have anticipated Trump blatantly disregarding his gag order 10+ times.

And then I think the remaining days prior to trial when it got put on hold was like 88 or something like that. Assuming SCOTUS rejects the argument and sends the case back to Judge Chutkan, that would put the earliest trial date at Monday September 23rd. I can't remember how long the January 6th trial was expected to last.

Justice Jackson says we would have the opposite problem if the president wasn't chilled. The most powerful person in the world would be unrestrained if there wasn't a threat of criminal liability and it would essentially give the opportunity to turn the seat of the presidency into a crime center (paraphrasing).

When Trump was pressuring state officials on various phone calls, it was his own private lawyers on the calls and not white house lawyers. Hard to make the case that those were official acts when he was literally using private lawyers in the effort.

Justice Barrett brings up a good point. The special counsel's brief brings up the fact that Trump engaged in private acts sufficient to charge even if the court rules that some of his acts were official acts. Trump's lawyer concedes that private acts can be charged. Barrett went through some of the alleged conduct in the indictment and Trump's lawyer agreed that they were private acts.

This isn't going well for Trump. Which shouldn't be a surprise, given the absurdity of this appeal, but... The fact that we're even here at SCOTUS arguing about this bullshit is nuts, and makes me uneasy.

I believe this is Justice Sotomayor asking if the president would be able to have the military assassinate someone he or she deems to be corrupt. Trump's lawyer saying it depends on the context.
