First of all, I'd like to apologize for taking so long to get this topic up after nominations ended. But I have been doing more listening and organizing my thoughts and comments on each nomination behind the scenes, so I expect things to go a lot more smoothly from here.

I must start off this list by congratulating the participants. Rather than a 1/10 or even a 0/10, nothing on this list got worse than a 2.5/10. You all managed to avoid nominating something truly terrible .

Here we have something. I'm not at all sure what this something is. The DnB backing beat is actually kinda cool. Then we have, layered over the entire song, this downright obnoxious instrument that, in the best of my ability, I can only compare to Undertale dialogue sounds. Like, without that, this piece is good enough at creating an eerie atmosphere that it could've feasibly jumped a dozen or so placements. The "unsettling factor" works in its favor, but this has so many disjointed sounds crammed into it that I can't place it above any other song on the list. The fact it has that merit to go on does give it a better score than the bottom-placing songs in either of my other two rankings, but overall this just feels confused.
https://i.imgur.com/TGkNCva.gif https://i.imgur.com/8mWCvA4.gif
I kept waiting for that instrument to kick in based on your description, but I made it nearly a minute into the song before concluding that you must be talking about that one thing that's been playing the whole time, which I didn't consider the slightest bit problematic when it started. So clearly we have different feelings about how this song should sound.

"Zenless Zone Zero" is a pretty cool name for a game, unless the devs just chose that name so they can force having "ZZZ" as its abbreviation * tsk tsk tsk *

We're thrown into this song with English and Chinese (I think? Please correct me if I am wrong) vocals, in a style with clean vocals, metalcore growls, and rap all mixed in. Honestly my "weird boomer musical tastes" play big into me not being crazy about this music that sounds like this to begin with, but this doesn't go above and beyond its voguish 2020s anime metalcore style into something unique enough for me to enjoy. It has a sense of chasing Pop music trends, but with metal added on to give it a bit of an edge. The guitar riff at around 2:23 was really cool, but this song threw all of its eggs into one basket focusing entirely on its vocals, and those vocals fell short. This just sounds like the opening theme you'd listen to an anime every week as it aired, then immediately forget the moment the season ends.

man I did not mean to come off so harsh on this, but this is about what I come up with no matter which way I dissect and break apart the elements of this song

Everything about this is sheer madness. If the YouTube comments are anything to go by, this is made entirely of Doom sounds? This is loud, in-your-face, and honestly manages to avoid last place by virtue of actually being a pretty funny shitpost. The little melody at around 1:30 sounds just like a popular song that I can't put my finger on just what it is, and it's driving me crazy. Not as crazy as this song though. In a sense, this almost appeals to the same part of me that liked that Violent Vengeance song you nominated years back, but that one also had the benefit of being legitimately amazing .

runt of the ranking

This is one of the most utterly inoffensive, if repetitive, pieces of video game music I have ever heard. If someone told me " quick, on the fly compose a 30 second tune for an action scene in a 2003 movie tie-in video game for the PS2 " I would tell them " wtf I can't write music ", but if I could this would be pretty close to what I'd come up with. It has really angery strings that are telling you to complete this timed mission in 59 seconds or GAME OVER! Actually you know what, I know what this song is. Imagine you're over at your relatives' house, and your 6 y/o nephews are playing the PS2 (their parents can't afford a modern console), and it's dinner time so they call everyone in to the dining room, but they left their 2003 superhero video game on, so while everyone is out enjoying their Thanksgiving dinner, this music is just BLASTING in the background for 30 minutes because those little runts of the litter won't turn off the damn TV.

As an addendum, I was kinda hoping this'd have a surprise amazing soundtrack like Thor: God of Thunder for the Nintendo DS (why the fuck is that OST so good)

hooo boy here we go

Once again, I am here with a Persona 3 song near the very bottom. I think it's just the vocalist I'm not too crazy about in this game's soundtrack. It all started with my bad first impression of Mass Destruction and it all kinda went downhill from there (I actually kind of enjoy that song in an ironic way now). For such a *big* JRPG series, Persona is the only one where I'm not totally amazed by its music. Like, gimme regular SMT music instead lol. The jazzy chords and drum beat are nice though, so there's at least some more stuff going on here. Should I have placed this higher? Probably, but I just can't get into this.

I've dropped the game, so maybe an explanation has since come out, but as far as I can tell it is solely word salad chosen for the abbreviation. I like but don't love the song, I think. The chorus is a bit too generic, I think? But I certainly don't mind this style.

The Mock 2 song is amazing and I need to play this wad when I get home.

Here's a song I remember from VGMC a while back! I'll admit feeling like this song was a bit of a chore to listen through each time it was in a VGMC match (looking at records, exactly twice). Maybe being in the heat of the competition against other VGM (of which I can't even remember) didn't forge a good first impression of this, but listening to this in a vacuum I have warmed up to it a bit. The world instruments create this mystical aura, I'm getting the sensation of flying through this foresty ruins area (could be totally off the mark here in terms of the actual game >_>). The instrumentation/sound signature here at least saves it from being something completely boring like Electric Power Building (PowerOne) .

Our very first entry in hdt's bold strategy of just nominating as many songs as possible with the word "Rainbow" in their names. Or maybe it's the strategy of nominating as many Nintendo songs as possible that'll get taken down for copyright infringement because Nintendo is a [redacted]. That instrument at 16 seconds in is making me think of the Rugrats soundtrack, and it's really throwing me off big time. Other than that, this has some chill vibes, but it's nothing too special and definitely feels like a product of its time N64 song. It's a short loop, but there isn't really anything else it could add, it gets its job done.

If I could describe this song in one word, it would be disjointed? There are so many ideas mixed into this song, the cheesy lyrics (THE PROTAGONIST IN ME what is this, Devil May Cry? lol), layered on top of heavy metal music, wait no now it's techno, hey is that CHIPTUNE?? This is the only song I have ever heard that has used the word "Chimerical" in its lyrics, so don't think that didn't go unappreciated. Like, this is actually cool, but I feel like I gotta pick up all the pieces of this song that are just strewn about. Definitely something worth revisiting at a later date though.

I've had some trouble picking a single, unitary rating for this song because it's in the predicament of rapidly oscillating between "cool tune" and "annoying". This has a really catchy, ice-cream truck style simple-yet-memorable melody akin to old Pokmon music, but I just can't get past that Tagin' Dragon -ass beat permeating the whole song. Like, it's a good tune, but the '80s Sega Master System soundchip is really doing this no favors. It's a case of one single factor dragging dragon down the rest of this song.

Okay, so just now I listened to a couple other Wonder Boy III songs, and while a bit better, I feel like even the NES had better sound quality than this system (assuming this isn't just potato sound emulation on the part of the YouTube uploader)

Oh yeah and regarding Atolm Dragon, it's actually a boss theme! Though a core theme of the Panzer Dragoon games is the corruption of nature for the sake of power, and the character this theme is linked to fits into that theme quite well.

Late response because sudden work travel but I think that writeup applies to most original Pokmon Snap songs. I still love the Oak's lab theme but it is very product of its time.

This has many of the makings of a song I'd really like. This has that same flavor of repeating techno loop that is used in several of my other all time favorite soundtracks on the GameCube ( Custom Robo and a number of the minigame themes from Super Monkey Ball 2 ). But then it just doesn't go anywhere with it. This sounds like the intro to a very good song, except that the intro is nearly three and a half minutes long. The 2003 stock techno sound can only carry a song so far. If anything, it's inoffensive.

And with that, everything from here on is at least a 5/10

Congratulations, we have achieved mediocrity

You ever just stand around, chatting amongst a group of friends, and one of them tells a joke, now this joke you're sure is hilarious , but you don't get it at all, so you just awkwardly stare blankly at them! What I'm trying to say here is: I don't get the joke! I do remember the really old "terrible recorder meme" that was popular on the internet a while back (see example below)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G44xTr8D_bw
but in that case we at least have an iconic song to go by. Without any context here, with what I am assuming is just this game's title theme played badly on a recorder, I am only left with confusion.

Ooh a song that thinks it's special because it doesn't use a YouTube link (jk, YouTube is a pretty terrible platform). Beyond that, this song is remarkably unremarkable. The high point of this song is that wind instrument that appears 25 seconds in, then continues as inoffensive background sound (another track where that word "inoffensive" really works well). Or as much as I hate using the word, perhaps "generic" would be an even better choice. There's uhhh, also a techno beat and guitar, but there's little here to remind me that I'm actively listening to music and not just background sounds. This isn't even bad, it's just mid to the max. 7th Dragon is here once again proving itself that I'd rather be listening to any other Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack instead.

What! This might be the first time that I genuinely wonder if I submitted the wrong track because we can't be listening to the same thing. I'd understand the reaction if I did an ambient chillout song, but would've thought the sound design and buildup were more engaging than that. It's always been a unique song to me because my favourite part is the loop point, it's a very VGM-specific thing and not smooth at all but works somehow! Also I submitted 3 songs, not 5

some songs i'm really sad to see down here tbh, though none that particularly surprise me as they don't feel very fl coded really. like on the one that just went out, as far as vfd songs go, i suspect ladyin was one of the best options for the ranking, especially for a non-battle theme, buuuut. i mean, yeah. it didn't really scream go-to fl81 pick material as a koshiro soundtrack, and even in it i did just admit that if i'd picked one for this it'd have been a battle theme which is kind of crazy for me to be admitting as a noted koshiro town and dungeon theme lover so. yeah. again not bad ones at all, but i feel there are just a lot of songs in this ranking that are catered pretty directly ( crossing fingers that my meme set of touhou doujin songs works )

This is better music than whatever I would have expected from a PGA video game is what I would say if Breaking Pandora didn't set the bar so incredibly high! Like the last one, this is another ambient chillout song (or at least whatever I interpret "ambient chillout" to be), but this one edges out the previous song in the ranking with its funky bass. I wish I could've given this a higher score, and on my first listen hearing that bass, I thought I was going to! Synthwave is a pretty cool genre, and this has a catchy beat to it. I do feel this plays it a bit too "safe" though. At the risk of seeming like I'm grading this off of something as esoterically defined as bad vibes, my brain says "this is good", but my heart is saying "meh". If one were to take every synthwave song ever written, and blend them all together into the "average synthwave song", I'd imagine it'd sound a lot like this. This is perfectly serviceable; nothing special. If anything this could use a little more edge to it (like that Carpenter Brut song that was in VGMC years back).

This would've been a lot lower had I done this ranking topic when I first started posting here (and could somehow time travel to when this song was written).
