Wait, are people just picking their favorites?
Sure seems that way. This topic is probably one of the biggest misses so far.

My metric: If you can play a couple tunes from the game and a large % of the population (gamers or not) recognize it, it is an iconic soundtrack as a Rushmore.
Bells, bells, bells!
I still don't think Super Mario Bros. should be considered. Individual songs are not soundtracks!

I mean its also the underworld, sea, castle, victory music, star man, when time is running out, game over, you dying etc

Mega Man 2
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII
Undertale

Didn't look at any other answers yet but that feels reasonable

Recognizability has nothing to do with whether something deserves to be on a Rushmore or Trump would've won the presidents topic.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
I think for the gaming-specific Rushmores you have to balance recognizability with the kind of stuff 'hardcore' gamers actually give a shit about.

Otherwise we'd be voting for Angry Birds, Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, and Subway Surfer. Maybe Mario Bros to throw the gamers a bone.

Halo 2

The last is just a fanboy pick naturally

Drop Clannad and FFVIII

Add Nier and Undertale

My take is there aint no soundtrack aside from like SMB1 that people at large are gonna recognize so you just gotta rep genres and eras and play to video game music people not the people at large.

i think if you really wanted to do top 4 most well-known soundtracks it would look basically exactly the same as top 4 most well-known video games
like the pokemon soundtracks are obviously well-known and pretty good, but are they the first thing people think of when they think pokemon or are they just attached to an already-insanely-popular series
Undertale
Final Fantasy VIII
Castlevania: SOTN
Katamari Damacy

( SBell )
I feel like a composer list is way way cleaner than soundtracks tbh

hell I'm sure even if VII is considered for FF, given how FF fans are you poll 10 you may end up with 10 different answers for their favorite soundtrack for that series
Warning: I'm literally VeryInsane.
Mega Man 2
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV. Turtles In Time
Streets of Rage
Splatoon
My personal top 4 would look completely different, but I feel like, man I don't know:

Mario 1
Final Fantasy VII
Mega Man 2
Undertale

basically you have to have something by Kondo and something by Uematsu. Mario 1 and FF7 would be the most iconic picks for that.

past that idk. Mega Man 2 is just kind of the filler for "other series famous for music" like Mega Man, Sonic and Halo (something in those two series is a good sub for it, the hardest part with Sonic is picking a single Sonic game) and MM2 in particular has Wily Stage 1, and Undertale is arguably the game OST of the 2010s.

Given both musical taste and the criteria for inclusion on game music Rushmore are subjective, I don't think there's really any sense in being overly critical of people's choices. TBH I'm not sure what I would consider a pivotal game soundtrack; changes in game music were usually tech-driven.

imo Mega Man 2 is a boomer pick that hasn't been relevant for a long time, there's better choices based on notoriety

so i don't really value the grammys on this because they never cared much for video game music. like it's an argument for Journey but the game and its soundtrack came and went. there's no long lasting legacy which is where i'd place the Rushmore as mattering more, as something iconic. award shows could matter but only if it also reflects cultural importance too and that just plain ain't what the grammys are for with video games. and i say this knowing that Baba Yetu will one day be in this contest for something and that'll be an argument for it too (though it has a way, way greater and longer lasting impact than anything Journey). i also don't need the noms to necessarily be "things that everyone knows" because the more niche something is the less it's going to be relevant. there's certainly a factor of recognizability but just because everyone knows the Mario theme doesn't make people go "oh yeah so that got me into video game soundtracks." here my thought goes it needs to be something that makes people go "wow, that came from a video game? what else is there?" basically it needs to represent the niche more and be something impactful, not just recognizable.

on to the noms:

Undertale
Chrono Cross
Kingdom Hearts

Undertale fits the bill of importance and culture. it went way beyond everything else. it's also with really good standouts.

Chrono Cross i feel belongs more on a soundtrack situation because it stands out on its own and definitely influenced plenty of others. to this day it's known less as an RPG and more as the game with the really good soundtrack. love Trigger and i can easily see both get snubbed for competing with each other, Cross is just the one of "oh the soundtrack" and gets beyond the chiptune era and into full orchestration, which is important.

KH is there because there's a handful of songs which are just immortalized in gaming music from it and a good chunk of the love of the series is in its music. in some cases that does play pretty close to the licensed music rule but the versions representing the series are to the game itself. that still doesn't cover Dearly Beloved or Hikari/Simple and Clean though so hey. the game also helps bridge that gap into making people interested in VGM more, they may be lured in by Disney but end up falling in love with the Shimomura pieces more, at which point it's done. definitely was a gateway for a lot of people.

uncertain of the 4th and i don't want to have to repost this wall of text if i switch.
do have thoughts on DKC2, Guilty Gear X2, and Nier. surprising nobody's mentioned guilty gear yet. like okay not influential enough but nobody's favorite eh? there's an argument for a shooter or street fighter or hell, MGS1/2/3, like there's definitely an argument for a Metal Gear. but not gonna nom any of those yet.

  • Tetris
  • Street Fighter II
  • Undertale
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
There are far too many options to give an HM list.
Congratulations to azuarc, Guru champion!
actually yeah i feel stupid now I'm replacing Mega Man 2 with Street Fighter 2

Tetris is another game that should be up there but that's really more just one song than a soundtrack

Final Fantasy 7 (could be CT here too)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl/Ultimate -- whichever has more votes (what an incredibly broad collection of great songs in gaming)
VVVVVV (the soundtrack's small but there is no game with a tighter soundtrack)
Undertale (Toby Fox composed the shit out of this while making a masterpiece of a game)

Many games deserve a shout-out, but I'll add that Portal 2 deserves some recognition somewhere in this topic -- it's both great and also innovative in how it used its soundtrack in-game.

Chrono Trigger
Undertale

Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
Super Mario Bros
Chrono Cross
Umineko

definite favouritism with Umineko but its more that its so much better than anything else and held in similarly high regard by most whove listened.

<DeathChicken> you are my hero for being the first person to cite National Geographic in Mercs
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Opoona
Kirby Triple Deluxe

Ok, ok....since you don't allow more than one from each franchise.... (but for the above keeping in line with the rules, I would swap out Gates for Panzer Dragoon Orta....)

Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Mega Man 2
Final Fantasy VII

Something like that. Maybe these are too old-school, though. Certainly back during the time of VGMC1, those would have been the answers.

More modern music is maybe something like.....

Umineko
NieR
Undertale
Terraria Calamity

How to compromise here....? How about this...

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII
Undertale
Umineko

Final Fantasy VII (One Winged Angel)
Super Mario Bros (Ground Theme)
Halo: Combat Evolved (Main Theme)
Mega Man 2 (Entire OST?)

I feel like the first three are objectively correct, I am not sure about the 4th slot but Mega Man 2's entire OST feels iconic enough to where its the answer maybe? The other three games just have songs that are basically drilled into the brains of anyone that's even approached a video game.

YESTERDAY: I have to wonder if Space Ghost would have done better if so many people didn't consider it an Adult Swim original (it debuted on CN so it counted here).

It feels insane to me that this has to be clarified, but maybe Im older than some of the people here.

EDIT: I keep forgetting to do a most WTF answer, there was nothing really *that* crazy but props to @hylianknight3 for being the only one to vote for Sheep in the Big City AND Time Squad. Respect, brother

When this was listed on the extended schedule as 90s Cartoon Network, I was seriously bummed I wouldnt be able to vote for Sheep or Time Squad, so when the title was changed, I wasnt going to miss my chance!
The azuarc of the contest universe is long, but it bends toward Guruship.
