Alt and Ctrl left side only. Shift is used for whatever the opposite side of the letter that i need to use it for.
Touch type just means you don't look at the keyboard when typing.
I checked Wikipedia on this and they said that touch typing specifically means that you're holding your fingers over the home row, and typists who do not use the home row are considered "hybrid type".wikipedia is not always definitive
wikipedia is not always definitiveIn this case it is definitive that people use different definitions for it
Ever since browsers removed the backspace as back button shortcutholy shit I forgot they actually did that! What an amazingly good decision that was.
Ever since browsers removed the backspace as back button shortcutFirefox still has this feature, setting
browser.backspace_action
to 0 will enable it
if you don't do that, what's your anchor to actually start typing correctly without looking?I have tried to figure this out for myself but I don't really know. My muscle memory is based on the full keyboard pretty much. I can hit a key with any hand from any position.
I'm super curious what the people who say they touch type but don't use the home row are doing. How are you positioning your hands when you start typing? The natural thing to do is to just glide your index fingers to the raised parts of the F and J keys, which would place you on the home row - if you don't do that, what's your anchor to actually start typing correctly without looking?

asdfghjkljesus there's no reason to get that frustrated
My home row is ertyu
Oh, thanks. I would've guessed the home row to be the bottom or top one.
This topic cursed me. Yesterday my left shift was kinda broken, and in trying to fix it I broke it completely in a way I'm pretty sure is irreparable. So rather than use right shift like a monster, my left shift is disabled, my caps lock is left shift, and my right alt key is caps lock... so I guess I do use right alt now...
What does the 'home row' mean?my "Home" key is on the same row as the numbers
