Heavy is the head that wears three crowns - I've officially clinched my third straight year as Fantasy Critic champion amongst my group of friends.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/2/20b83b99.png

Just barely though, I was down 10 points heading into December when I finally bailed on Silksong coming out and picked up my ace (Asgard's Wrath 2) since everyone else was full up. Ended up being better than anything I added all year to boot. Also got lucky that 2nd place had Redfall and (stupidly) counter picked Alan Wake 2 during the draft.

But now everyone is getting mad and have made it clear that the end goal is to not have me win again so I need some new aces. Draft is first week in January. Give me all your hidden gems that will do well on Open Critic. My desire to crush their wills is at an all time high.

I would just like to brag about being the one to suggest Sea of Stars in last year's topic.

I don't know if much is coming to mind offhand for 2024. Is Eiyuden Chronicle a deepcut? Another Crab's Treasure? Palworld might be a high-ceiling gamble. Maybe Project L if you think it's coming within a year.

I'm still going to try for Plucky Squire, I think that game is going to go off.

I've come out of my mania on Suicide Squad though, that game is going to be trash.

I feel good about Like a Dragon 8 and Eiyuden Chronicle.

I feel like Metaphor: ReFantazio is a scary one to pick, because there's no telling if it'll be a huge hit or the next Soul Hackers 2.

It is probably not worth betting on Level-5's games.
Change is weird.
Metaphor is probably getting a 90+.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.

keep a look out for a real hidden gem that's releasing in 2024, it's definitely flying under a lot of people's radars: "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth" the sequel to cult classic Final Fantasy VII Remake from indie studio darling Square-Enix. A lot of people are sleeping on it!
Now that the floodgate has been lifted with MP1 Remaster this year, Metroid Prime 2 Remaster is a somewhat realistic prospect for 2024. XIV also shows no sign of falling out of favour so Dawntrail is probably a safe bet that doesn't immediately come to mind as well.

I have a good feeling about Nine Sols.

For our own safety
Mina the Hollower (Link's Awakening-like from Shovel Knight devs) might be a decent pick.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
Maybe Dreamsettler, the sequel to Hypnospace Outlaw? I'm hopeful that it'll be good and I think it should come out this year.
Under Night II comes out in January, and I feel like that should review pretty well at the very least.
It's not so impossible!

basically any somewhat not AAA game that may not be directly on anyone's radar that will (likely) get mid-80s

I'm going to have the last draft pick so unless everyone is dumb I expect Rebirth to be gone by then
If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?
#theresafreakingghostafterus
also basically anything that's likely to be left on the board after six rounds of drafting that I may be able to pick up for cheap

Drafting rounds are when all the big name announced stuff goes and then I'm going to need some gems to fill out my roster.

also also yes that does mean I drafted both suicide squad and forspoken this year LEAVE ME ALONE i fixed it and still won

I have no sense of foresight for which indies I have wishlisted will 1) actually come out in 2024, and 2) receive any kind of acclaim.

Uhh, I'll throw out Little Kitty, Big City. The trailer makes it look like it'll be Stray meets Untitled Goose Game.

If "game that's been in Early Access for two years and officially launching in 2024" counts, Core Keeper should score well based on its EA Steam reviews.

It's always so hard to predict, but Bloomtown: A Different Story could maybe be 2024's surprise hit indie pixel RPG.
Change is weird.
Another random name I'll toss out there; Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, the next title from the dev of Sayonara Wild Hearts, which doesn't have a release date but I would guess comes out this year.
Are straightforward ports/remasters allowed? Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy could be a pretty safe 80-ish pick that might get overlooked? (maybe this isn't as deep a cut as I think it is, though)
I wonder if Aero GPX will be released and be good
ND
We don't allow straight ports there has to be some sort of remaster element to it.

So like, SMRPG counted last year but Metroid Prime would not have.

UFO50 should be a very good pick imo.

I can easily see this flirting with high 80s metacritic if not higher. Lots of big names especially Derek Yu being involved, the sheer originality and creativity on display and the very positive buzz to some of the game demos.

Derek gave an update recently that it's targeting 2024 but it might still miss the date.
congrats to azuarc, our GotD2 guru!
I've long gone with the strategy of only picking up things with solid release dates or all but certain dates. because if someone counterpicks you, you can't drop the game anymore.

My strat is also to always counterpick games I know aren't going to come out since a zero is often a high score for a counterpick.

what in the world...

The top of my wishlist is Silksong, Crowsworn, and Little Kitty Big City, which was already mentioned. I doubt much else has a chance to be big.

For games I haven't wishlisted, I agree on The Plucky Squire, and my one contribution to this topic is to keep an eye on Life By You . It's a Sims clone from the same publisher as Cities: Skylines, which dethroned SimCity 8 years ago. Slated for a March release, though I doubt it hits it, but it'll probably release this year.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.

Id be shocked if Metaphor scored anywhere near Soul Hackers 2. SH2 is pretty clearly a low budget B-team game forced to reuse a lot of assets, whereas Atlus established a new studio for Metaphor which is supposed to form a "third pillar" for the company. Not to mention it's being led by Personas main creative leads and it basically looks like fantasy Persona which is as safe as it gets.
congrats to azuarc, our GotD2 guru!
Metaphor is still super risky because most of the good ratings for Persona come from it's modern relatable narrative. If it loses that then it has to compete on gameplay and plot alone which is not really the strongest.

Haunted Chocolatier probably won't come out in 2024 either, but if it does it has some major upside. It's the next game from the guy who made Stardew Valley. He's hard at work on the (supposedly) final Stardew update 1.6 right now, but that should be done (Soon) and then it's back to work on HC. Dude is a perfectionist that doesn't like to let other people touch his creations so development is slow.

There are tons of JRPGs with similarly modern relatable narratives including recent Persona clones that score much worse. The reason why Persona scores so consistently high is because of its signature game systems like social links and the calendar and especially with P5, slick UI and high production value. All signs point to Metaphor having all of that. And also FE3H already proved you can do the whole Persona system in a fantasy world and make it work.

I'm obviously not saying Metaphor will reach P5s metascore but when you are coming from the mid 90s, you can drop 10 points and still be in a range that'd be considered a success for most games in this topic.

That's a bad comparison because Persona is about the full package, far more than the sum of its parts. The similar games are missing parts of the package, and Metaphor seems like it will too.

But yeah if TC is looking for scores in the 80s then Metaphor should be safe. I just wouldn't bet on 90+
_foolmo_

There were only like 14 90+s in 2023.

I personally consider an 85 (15 points) to be a good pickup.
