The graphics in this have a ton of charm - it's a little funny seeing them go back to a more FFVII/cartoony style versus the more "adult"-looking FFVIII models.

Spent over 15-20 tries doing the sword dance. Kept getting my X/Y mixed up and hitting a face-button instead of a D-pad button.

Haven't even actually escaped the castle yet with the princess because I spent so long doing that. So far the game has been a little more like FFVIII with a slow start than FFVI or FFVII which got me going really quickly.

Vivi is super-cute.

oh also does this game not have item descriptions in the menu? thought that was weird
yet all azuarc of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable - they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness
did you get the perfect score in the end?

also ngl it took me forever to do super early game too since i just went around hunting for obscure npc interactions which it really has a lot of and may or may not have gotten addicted to tetra master in the process
theres a fuckton of missables if you care about that. dont think any are 'important' though
congrats to azuarc for victorying GotD guru

And yeah lots of missables. Probably the most important are some pieces of equipment since those are how you get your abilities.

This one seems to be a love it or hate it game. I'm in the hate camp personally. Didn't really like any of the characters outside of Beatrix and the battle system was awful. Never got the love for Vivi either.

i have realized that for me the simpler the battle system the better. if it's more complex than an average snes rpg then i probably can't be bothered

I just started this too! I've played through all the FF's starting with 1 and now I'm here. This game is absolutely so charming, I'm in love with it.

btw 8 was awful. might even beat out 2 for worst

your comment is kinda funny saying they went back to the cartoony style of 7. 7 felt like a massive tonal shift to being more serious and gritty in both artstyle and world building compared to 6. I think it probably only feels cartoony compared to 8 because the graphics weren't quite there yet, but I think being more like 8 was their goal. I'd say 9 is a return to 6 rather than 7

I think the overworld models of FFVII were supposed to invoke old-school sprites.

Hard to say that FFIX's artstyle is supposed to be like the old games though. The FMVs in the playstation rereleases for FF1-6 actually use a very realistic style. FFIX is the only one that I think is actually trying to be genuinely cartoony.

So I'm at the 2 hour mark - just reached the next save point. Playing as Steiner was pretty unexpected - he's what, our third playable character so far? - and while I was confused at first, it appears that my mission was simply rounding up the other Knights of Pluto? They're all goofs and I quite enjoyed the comedy here; seems like Steiner has a little rivalry with Beatrix. I kind of hate this character design archetype with the small head and short legs. But he's funny, and it's even funnier when he plays along with the play , acting all horrified when Garnet "dies."

I don't understand why Queen Brahne has to look like this, but I supposed she's obviously the (a) villain if she doesn't care about Garnet's well-being other than being alive.

The two cutscenes here are excellent. I prefer the first where Zidane, Garnet, and Steiner plummet from the watchtowers; however, the second one - the airship's escape and the cannon-launched harpoons - is also magnificent.

Bizarrely, we're at two hours into the game and I'm pretty sure we have yet to have a real battle. We've had a bunch of gag/plot battles but not a single one that was just straight-up. Am I crazy? Is this game crazy? FFVI and FFVII just threw me right into it. The actual plot events and set pieces have been fun enough to carry us, and I guess I wouldn't totally object to the game just being setpieces and plot events... but yeah, feels weird!

FFIX eases you into the experience but the game was designed to be FF for beginners, an odd choice for a game released at the end of the PS1's lifespan, to be sure, but yeah.

FFVIII eases you into the gameplay, too, but not quite as slowly as IX.

Played for just thirty minutes, saving at the same save point, but this felt fun and productive. Got to try out Steiner for a spin as a playable character - he seems more tank-ish than Zidane. The tree-cage enemies are actually pretty annoying to fight; I have to use a few potions on both Zidane and on Garnet (and later Vivi) to take these guys down, though we're immediately sent back due to their spreading spores into our friends' pores. Ick.

I'm enjoying the kind of lighthearted tone. While the shipwreck is pretty dark still, Zidane is way more fun than Cloud or Squall. I think going from age 21 -> 18 -> 16 was a pretty conscientious decision on Square's part. There are plenty of jokes about him just chasing a cute girl, and people are basically on board with it.

Another fun aspect is the Moogles as save points. They're just over-the-top cute - like who asked for this? Doesn't matter, it's pretty great regardless.

After a quick duel with our boss, we've gotten the go-ahead to rescue Garnet, and now we get to build up our party to three with both Steiner and Vivi. The adventure begins anew next time!

These ATEs are so utterly random of a mechanic, but I'm kind of liking them. What exactly inspired this?! Who can say.

I wish more games had an ATE mechanic.

I remember as a kid thinking "Oh, the ATEs are going this new gameplay thing they'll do going forward". And then they never did them again.

Zidane is a great character, and was a great breath of fresh air after the more emo previous main characters.

Also, Evil Forest music is so good. Also, this entire soundtrack is so good.

A shame ATEs ended up not staying they were great. Music is stellar as well. The only knock that I have on FFIX is that the combat is a bit...slow but keep having fun playing the game man.

Can't wait till you get through more of Evil Forest.

But I can't defend the gameplay, the battle system, the loading times, trance, and worse yet - this is a completionist's worst nightmare (I don't even dare to try)

Game's combat speed is the biggest knock against it and that was at least fixed with speed up options. Trance sucks too but that's whatever.
oh, right. trance. it was just... increased strength, right? nothing else? i didn't notice any cool abilities i gained during it.

it also appears that we "equip" our skills to our other equipment here?

Every character gets their own unique ability during trance I think, besides being stronger. I think Steiner might only get a strength boost though.

Nah, most character's uniques change (Zidane's Skill becomes Dyne, for example, with each skill getting changed to something else, while Vivi's Black Magic becomes Double Black, allowing doublecasting). Steiner I think is the only one to only have a strength boost.

You can't control when you Trance, tweak that and it becomes totally fine. As it is I just ignore it.

equipment has skills, while equipped your character will learn the abilities present, and once learned the character can equip the skills without wearing the equipment

What version are you playing?

Because, yeah, the original FF9 is ROUGH to play in this day and age with its slow ass battles, but the re-releases have speed up options that fix that and are ideal.
