One good scene does not justify the rest of the movie.

When it's that good, it does. The space fight around it is really good, too.

But I also don't hate the Ewoks or the movie's silly sense of humor in general so I actually like most of the movie anyway, so I'm not just handwaving away the rest of it. Best movie.

I rewatched Return of the Jedi when Disney+ came out and yeah, that helped get my feelings settled about the franchise. The movie is just not good, even though the throne room scene was still incredible. I can't call it a good installment as a whole though, which changed what my previous opinions on the series was: "At least the original trilogy was good."

Also, it was really hard to watch that ending where everybody is celebrating and happy that the Empire's been defeated knowing that in 30 years everything in the galaxy is going to be more miserable than ever and that pretty much all my favorite characters are going to die pointlessly with every victory they've made becoming worthless. That's why I really hate these soft reboot sequels. Couldn't we just have had a brand new story for the sequel trilogy? So that the original story could simply rest in piece?

Why don't RotJ defenders ever mention Jabba's palace as a positive? It's not that connected to the main plot, but everything else about it is pretty good.

That said, RotJ is easily the worst of the OT because everything between that and Luke's reunion with Vader is incredibly dull. But hey, a movie that's half great and half boring is still better than usual for Star Wars.

I didn't realize Jabba's Palace needed to be defended. I thought the universal agreement among defenders and haters was the opening is great and the ending is great, but the middle is what deviates people from liking or disliking the movie.

Yeah I think it's too long, but Luke being like cool Jedi guy and the way the team shows up throughout it is great, and I enjoy the fight both vs the Rancor and above the Sarlacc pit

Yeah sure slave Leia is great but the mini-concert is a bit cringe, saber fighting with no one getting cut, and Bobba's silly demise.

it's all great. can't fathom not liking jabba's palace. even if you don't like the ewoks (they're fine) you still get the speeder chase.

I will say george lucas did really try to ruin ROTJ with the special edition. the original's great though.

Jabba's palace feels so pointless when the movie is considered in its entirety. It also goes on way too long, and that stupid song they added in the special edition is just the worst. I do still like the scenes in it, but if I'm honestly reviewing the movie as a whole I can't consider it a redeeming element.

Although that metal bikini is probably one of the greatest gifts in cinema history.

Jabbas Palace is a part of the problem! Its better than act 2 by far but its poorly paced and tonally at complete odds with the rest if the film.

RotJ is not a bad movie! It just shares the flaws of the movies that would follow it, and basically foretold how Episode 1 would go.

I like most Star Wars. Star Wars is good.

Also whenever I think of RotJ I think of the scene where Luke and Vader chill on Endor. The shot of the AT AT walking through the jungle always stands out for some reason, specifically the shot of the top half of it. Like the AT AT is a character or something

RotJ is a mixed bag. there's plenty of good stuff in it: the throne room scene, jabba's palace, the speeder chase, the space battle (second best space battle in all of the movies imo). but the ewoks are terrible and "oh here's another death star lol" is unforgivably lazy writing. i've softened up on RotJ and don't dislike it anymore but it's obviously not the best star wars movie.

and yeah, RotJ is definitely the movie that suffered the most from the special edition additions. that song is easily a bottom 5 star wars movie scene.

Slightly iffy on 2 vs. 9, 9 is more competent in filmmaking terms but oh my god is it the most creatively bankrupt of all these films. So for that reason 9 is the worst. Also I like the Obi-Wan noir parts of 2.

i think i have 2 over 1. the last 30-60 minutes of 2 are legitimately fun. it's really just the anakin/padme scenes that are unbearable.

i also have no idea where 8 goes, but it's somewhere between where you have it and right below 6.

Most of the movies are only good if you ignore the bad stuff. Honestly ESB is the only actual good movie of the entire series from beginning to end, to the point that Lucas himself couldn't even figure out how to ruin it with any special edition nonsense. Oh he tried, but it never lasted so now it's the only one of the originals that remains untainted.

The theatrical release of 4 is right alongside 5 in quality, but you can't legally watch that version (which continues to be an immense injustice) and all of the extra shit really brings it down.

As for RotJ, it's a good movie. The one on Disney+ sucks and I will never watch that version, I have the DVD one that I think is fine, the weird concert in Jabba's palace doesn't bother me since I watched it as a kid and nostalgia remedies that problem. Disregarding that, you're left with some good scenes in the beginning, a boring middle, and an utterly fantastic climax that absolutely does make up for the lackluster parts.

Same goes for TLJ, the middle is pretty damn boring whereas the beginning is pretty cool and the last half is incredible.

edit: also Rogue One, only good if you ignore the first third or so. Solo is only good if you ignore... continuity I guess? It's honestly just a fun movie, I don't understand why everyone hates it.

i think the very premise of tfa is kind of terrible and bleak - that only 30 years after the empire was taken down, this first order is even worse, and can destroy even more planets. like i didn"t need to see a bunch more faceless people get genocided to figure out we had enemies. the idea of someone being "temped by the light side of the force" also just feels like utter bullshit as well. the whole idea of the force is that the dark side represents temptation itself, while the light side is discipline.

very sharply written and well directed and fun to watch, though.
