Are you concerned that there won't be someone to take care of you in old age?

please find a more compelling reason for people who don't want children to consider having them (spoilers: there aren't any).

Without children, I'll be able to put aside the money and make the plans I need to be taken care of when I'm older. Just as people *with* children can do in case their children turn out to be horrible shitty monsters.

Don't worry you just not have to ever tell anyone you're only a few days from retirement

That way the flag will never be raised

Well no post here is worse than prof's, which suggests that an empty house is better than having children and that the two are mutually exclusive to one another.

so what? If they don't want children then what's wrong with that? So you personally like lots of children?

I don't personally like one or the other. I just think people like that, who believe the joy of creating and nurturing the next generation takes a backseat to having an empty house full of fleeting nothings, are people with whom I do not wish to associate. Humanity is a team sport and it's kind of like buying out of the game so you can have what is essentially a life that contributes nothing to our future as a species.

Do you know what a retirement home is

Yes, I had two sets of grandparents that lived in them. They hated it there except when their children and granchildren visited, so we moved them closer to us so they could be happier.

None, but if things work out with the girl I'm dating, I'd like to have one or two. Most of my friends have started to have kids, and they are all extremely happy.

Why am I obligated to contribute to our future as a species? Humanity is gonna be just fine if I, personally, don't have a kid. I'm sorry if that causes you to not wish to associate with me! I'm still very much okay with other people having and raising kids and having a house full of family and people they love but that is super not for me or the way i live my life. nor do i live in an "empty house full of fleeting nothings". also if humanity is a team sport we crushed every other team pretty badly already i'm not sure you need me up to bat.

It's fair to have that point of view, and it's not like my judgment of said point of view matters in the slightest. Only to me, so that's why I post it. The rest of the world could care less what I think. If you wish to not have children, that's entirely okay. I think prof's point of view is just the cherry on top of a personality that I've just grown to detest entirely, a selfish, completely closeted world where if you don't have a lot of money to make your problems go away, you quite frankly don't deserve any other solution. I don't see you as that kind of person, and I feel your point of view isn't predicated on "I want money rather than kids."

If I get to the point where I need someone else to look after me in order for me to carry on living then it's not worth me living anymore anyway as I would no longer enjoy life.

And I'm sure I will have plenty of money to make sure someone could take care of me anyway if it came to that.

There's a beautiful joy to relationships and probably making your own family...but I also take great pride in what I do with my free time nowadays too and I wouldn't call my outside-of-work contributions wasted either. No way I'm gonna stress about having children protect me after retirement when I'm single and turning down dates lately.

kids are great

it's hard to know the joy of having kids without going through it. on the surface it seems like a total pain in every way but it's not. I wasn't sure about how I would feel when we decided to have kids but it's surprisingly fulfilling to nurture another. my family went out of town last week without me and the house felt eerily quiet and desolate.

Also, well, I don't think I'd be motivated to raise children just so they can nurse me when I'm old. It would be a nice gesture but hey maybe they such at caretaking anyway.

a combination of 2nd and 3rd option. I'm not concerned but also it likely won't apply to me because I anticipate that I will die before I reach an old enough age to require being taken care of.

I think the point of my statement is that planning for your empty retirement instead of bettering the world in some way is the problem.

Why do children have a bearing on that? You can better the world without having kids and you can have kids without bettering the world.

Maybe making sure that I can retire without being a drain on other people's money would do more for the world than having a bunch of children who are doomed to be the dregs of society because they were raised by me

I like this world where contributing to to overpopulation is the only worthwhile thing possible. Because it is completely impossible to improve the world without having kids.

I don't think that's what I said. Is that what I said? Nope. It was a statement against your point of view, not against the act of choosing not to have children.

I'm not ignoring adoption. The thread is about having children, not about being a parent.
The TFR in America is actually somewhere between 1 and 2. In order for a population to grow rather than decline it needs to be at least 2. Assuming scarlet lives in the united states he would not contribute to overpopulation by having children. He would actually be moving the population of his country toward a more stable replacement number.
