Former Vice President Kamala Harris, forced to confront Israel's war in Gaza on the first night of her book tour, expressed compassion for the Palestinians and condemned President Donald Trump for giving the Israeli government a blank check.
Whats happening to the Palestinian people is outrageous and it beaks my heart, she told a packed New York City performance center on Wednesday night after being interrupted by the first of four pro-Palestinian protesters. Donald Trump has given (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu a blank check to do whatever he wants.
The comments came in the midst of a discussion about her new book, 107 Days, which was released on Tuesday and details the hyperspeed campaign she launched against Trump after Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race.
Harris was initially scheduled to make one appearance at the 1,500-person capacity Times Square performance center, but her team added a second show earlier in the evening because of high interest.
Few issues have divided the nation and the Democratic Party more than the war in Israel.
More than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, Gazas Health Ministry said earlier in the month. The conflict erupted after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas.
Democratic activists in particular have condemned leaders in both parties for not pushing back harder to stop the bloodshed.
Harris on Wednesday referenced her support for New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat who has also spoken out against the war in Gaza. She said the two spoke earlier in the day.
She said she told him she's excited about his candidacy.
You are bringing people in, and you are showing that there are voices that want to be heard, have felt left out and are now a part of what you are doing, she said, referencing the conversation. And that is so powerful.
Outside the venue on Wednesday night, dozens of activists protested on the sidewalk. Inside, the event veered off script several minutes after it began when a protester started shouting from the audience.
Your legacy is genocide. The blood of the Palestinians is on your hands, the first one, a man wearing a medical mask, yelled before being escorted out by security. Later, another woman said, This is your fault.
As the crowd grew angry with the disruptions, Harris called on them to take the temperature down.
She noted that, as vice president, she first spoke out publicly about starvation in Gaza a year and a half ago. At the time, she said, she took a lot of heat from the Biden administration for speaking out on the sensitive issue.
I understand your concern and how you feel I think I do, she told the third protester. And the reality of it is where we are right now didnt have to be this way in terms of the blank check that this president has given.
Youve got to get over this obsession, as do these people.I wonder if that will ever happen.
She should have said "Oh hey I see you're still not protesting Trump!"Watch the video
We were told they only protested Harris during the campaign because she was the only one who they could pressure to affect change. Well, she can't do that now, can she? Yet here they are, still protesting her and not the guy who actually has the power to end Israel's crimes against humanity. Hmm.Me thinks they are not a good faith actor.
I don't know if it's a hot take but even as someone who's firmly in support of Palestinians and ending the genocide in Gaza... how much of this is performative?
We have a whirlwind of overlapping problems in America that get worse on a daily basis; most of them setting us up for irreparable damage that won't be undone for generations, but to a lot of protesters, Gaza's the biggest issue.
I don't know if it's a hot take but even as someone who's firmly in support of Palestinians and ending the genocide in Gaza... how much of this is performative?I mean America funding genocide seems like a thing that could plausibly be the biggest issue to a large group of people

may she never know a moment of peace for her role in the fall of American democracyWhat.

Because Americans didn't elect her? Some people would rather blame Kamala than the electorate who failed her.
Some people would rather blame Kamala than the electorate who failed her.I guess this is true. In a sane country, Trump wouldn't get more than 10% of the vote.
I mean America funding genocide seems like a thing that could plausibly be the biggest issue to a large group of peopleObviously not since they voted for Trump
Because Americans didn't elect her?I think her historically terrible campaign wher she went from energizing her base to embracing republicans played a big role, and in particular the fact that shes going on this book tour/grift while Trump is actively destroying the country is disgusting

may she never know a moment of peace for her role in the fall of American democracyfucking christ she warned of trump being a dictator and how bad project 2025 is
Hindsight is 20/20 looking back on her campaign. The Dems are not the best at this and I don't think anyone is saying that.she obviously doesnt deserve all the blame but her garbage campaign played a role in it and yes, it was very obvious as it happened
But it's so bizarre that you are blaming the state of our country on her instead of... I don't know... the actual villain in office?
may she never know a moment of peace for her role in the fall of American democracy
It was definitely obvious at the time, but we can't admit that because then we might need to do something differently next time rather than trying to will the American people to vote for Democrats (I mean, if we can see how that's the right choice, then all voters should be able to, right?) and somehow being shocked when they don't.

Then you had an astute observation for that moment in time. I would say that's beside the point.I think the microcosm of how clear her campaign was shit was when she said America will have the most lethal army in the world at the DNC and the camera showed her stepdaughter visibly cringing
I don't think she necessarily ran a bad campaign. I think we have a swath of voters that align their beliefs with exactly with what Trump is doing. We were shown a mirror in this election.
I think the microcosm of how clear her campaign was shit was when she said America will have the most lethal army in the world at the DNC and the camera showed her stepdaughter visibly cringing
she energized the left in those first couple weeks and then she spent the rest of the time trying to court the right
OK that is really amazing but what are you doing to fight Trump.
Are we still pretending she lost the election when she courted one of the few Republicans willing to stand up to Trump and not when the media decided to sane wash Trump's every mad outburst or social media's coordinated propaganda campaign against her?
They can bring it up with Trump if they're so concerned.This.
Oh wait, Gaza Warriors won't do that. For some reason .
Goes to show you how little of a fuck they give about the Palestinian people.
may she never know a moment of peace for her role in the fall of American democracy
Literally all of it. Always has been. The same people derailed all political discussion in 2016 because "Bernie wuz robbed." Bernie himself got over it after like a day but these people kept trolling about it.I don't know if it's just me being too online but sometimes I feel bad about having the common sense to prioritize the absolute shitshow we're in over what's going on in Gaza. I want the genocide to end and I want the Israeli government to be held accountable for the years of horrors they've put Palestinians through but it's like... do these people not see any of the shit that's going on right now?
Are we still pretending she lost the election when she courted one of the few Republicans willing to stand up to Trump and not when the media decided to sane wash Trump's every mad outburst or social media's coordinated propaganda campaign against her?Nope it's all Harris fault for Cheney and not calling GOP weird enough times. I am a serious political voice.
