Since the quest line is basically the same I always just pick Imperials because Ulfric is an annoying asshole

Imperials are capitalists, but the Stormcloaks are white supremacist extremists.

The first emotional response is to side with the Stormcloaks because it's their land, but actually meeting their leader quickly changes that.

Stormcloaks are the obvious initial choice (Ralof is a bro, and going with the 'Cloaks lets you kill the Imperial Captain who ordered your execution), but Imperials are the better long-term choice once you realize what a little shit Ulfric is.
Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read.

Ulfric's an asshole, but let's be honest, the Empire is on borrowed time, it's gonna collapse soon anyway.

I'll give Skyrim credit that their civil war questline really is an ambiguous conflict with no easy answer.

The Empire needs the Nords to be able to stand up against the Thalmor.
The Nords got tired of the Thalmor before the rest of the Empire, and wanted their freedom.
Stormcloaks did the right thing for themselves but at the same time doomed a future alliance that had the power to really kick out the Thalmor.
GameFAQs isn't going to be merged in with GameSpot or any other site. We're not going to strip out the soul of the site. -CJayC

The Empire deserves to die, but the Stormcloaks do not deserve to be the ones that replace it.

And let's be honest, the choice is irrelevant anyway because the next ES game is probably just going to have the Aldmeri Dominion swoop in and conquer everything so they don't have to pick a canon outcome.

Yeah, I usually side with Imperials because again Ulfric's an asshole, but it does suck knowing that all you're doing is kicking the can down the road, you're not really saving the Empire.

Imperials. Siding with the Stormcloaks weakens Skyrim and makes it easier for the Thalmor to take over. The Stormcloaks are also racist. Plus you can only romance Legate Rikke using Amorous Adventures is if you side with the Imperials.

Well, one of them has a literal Warsaw Ghetto allegory in their capital city and their leader was literally set free by the Thalmor so he could destabilize Skyrim with his pride and ambition and ensure the human lands were weakened for their eventual resumption of the war, so... yeah, not them.

I did Imperial because that's the opposite of what the Thalmor wanted.

What the Thalmor want is for neither side to win. The Stormcloaks winning the civil war is just as bad for the Thalmor as an Imperial victory.

Highly debatable.

The Stormcloaks winning cleaves another province off of the already-weakened Empire and would justify a full-on Thalmor invasion of Skyrim. Skyrim is nowhere near strong enough to fight of the Aldmeri Dominion on their own, given that the Empire as a whole couldn't even overcome them, and the Empire would be in no position to assist given that all of their military assets just got thrown out of the province.

Keeping the Empire together makes the Dominion's job substantially harder, which is a good thing.

Anyways, I chose the Stormcloaks the very first time I played Skyrim. Every subsequent playthrough thereafter, I always joined the Imps.

I'm a sucker for the Roman aesthetic and the Imperials have a Roman aesthetic to them, never sided with the Stormcloaks. I'm also playing a Legionnaire in my latest LoreRim run.

Despite hundreds and hundreds of hours in the game I am not sure I ever played the civil war to the end. I usually go Stormcloaks when I make a Nord character otherwise Imperials.
