Why would Robotnik build a giant robot? Execs continue to be out of touch

Robotnik is a dude obsessed with putting animals into robots, wants to take over the world, and puts his face on everything he makes; hes not supposed to be rational , the answer to why hed build a giant robot is because he can !

Realistically though, they're right
He should build smaller robots so they can be fast enough to deal with Sonic.

I dont understand why Metal Sonic is such a threat. He has never given Sonic a harder time than anything else, he isnt strong, and he has never succeeded at anything.

Also when we see Robot ik consistently and unexplainably faster than Sonic whenever the plot calls for it, why use MS.
